An easy way to remember what the top note will be is to look at the one before the bottom note (it's been awhile since I studied music so I don't know what you call it). If you're playing C the note before it is B so that will be the 7th Note.

I learn piano by my own, atleast the basics of it..i can clearly say that guitar is harder to learn than piano..i can say that there are songs i can play and learn by ear in piano, where in guitar i am having a hard time figuring out..maybe because piano key is way more organize. but what is hard to learn is the theory behind all this..yes.. we can learn the scales and arpeggios and modes.. but applying it is a totaly different story.. i really love piano.. but im stuck theoretically..i mean..u can learn a song..but it is amazing when i saw people playing a song and making the song one if their own by applying the theory behind it..

How to freestyle on piano: stick to one key, my favorite key is Cb major, then play a bunch of different chords on different places in the same key….. and then it sounds good if you do it right….. oh.. and play singular notes first, to get a taste of what you are going to play.. this is why I’m not a teacher……
