This video is awesome! We can always find info about fish and corals, but nobody ever focuses on crabs! And they are so cool! Thanks Hilary!

This is the best and most informative video I’ve found, thank you so much ! Another really cool crab and my personal favorite is the calico crab aka the calico box crab they’re reef safe with caution but are so worth it, though if you keep ornamental clams a calico crab will 100% eat them . I would absolutely love to see a video on them 😊

I certainly learned a lot about crabs today and not too long from now I will be setting up a new reef tank and crabs will my choice for the clean up crew. This is the first time ever I watched a video by Hilary and I think she did an excellent presentation and I will be looking forward to seeing and hearing more from her. Thank you.

I mention to Samantha that I will have to do a special feature about them on my social platforms. I know a few people who dislike them because they've had experiences with the crabs getting out, but a good lid can help with that.

Awesome video - for me the best part of the saltwater hobby is the invertebrates. And after watching this video, I can now say - I have crabs!

Great video Hilary. Some reefers don’t see how important crabs 🦀 play in our ecosystem.
@WaterLoggedLife

Thanks, you're right they do play a very important role, and if you have them in your ecosystem, it means less work/cleaning for you.

I had no idea what a porcelain anemone crab was until after I got one from the fish store. I was confused as to why they seemed to be so attracted to my anemone and a bit alarmed when I saw it inside it! Also, emeralds deserve a bit more than just a reputation as bubble algae eater! When I got mine, he DEVASTATED all kinds of algae! Long, short, it didn't matter, he stripped the rocks bare! No more issues with algae after getting this guy!

Great video! I personally think the emerald crab should've been labeled reef safe with caution. I have video of one of mine absolutely destroying(eating) some acans!

I agree i bought two emeralds crabs, one red and one green. Within the first 48hrs i had to remove both because they both targeted the same bubble coral
@MakerofThingss
@MakerofThingss 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Once they're big they're super aggressive. I had a giant one that got bored of bubble algae after a year or two and started shredding any coral or inverts it could grab.

Thanks for watching. It sounds like you are not alone withe that "reef safe with caution" label. I will consider myself lucky never had an issue with them eating stuff they shouldn't.
@WaterLoggedLife
@WaterLoggedLife 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrPleco oh gosh that's no good. It makes me wonder if they were just crazy hungry from being at the lfs (Marc Levenson mentioned something about this on one of his live streams), and then when they got to your tank they just went after anything they could.

Shell on the staghorn hermit is not a photosynthetic coral, it is a hydroid and extremely difficult to maintain long-term. The hermit will use a regular snail shell after it dies.

I will have to go back and look at them again. I've never had success with them using other shells, but I am glad to hear that some of them do. Thank you for sharing and pointing that out.

That is so tricky! Depending on the size you need there are a few options... Craft stores occasionally sell them in their beach section (I've specifically had success at Michael's). Some of the online livestock places will have them I think I saw some on Reef cleaners recently, some etsy sellers carry them and another option is sea shell shops. There is on in particular that was really helpful (you can give them measurements and they will look), though I can't find it right now. If you send me a message on Instagram @waterlogged1313 I can let you know if I find it.

I've never met anyone else who has actually kept them, that's a bummer they messed with the snails. I like them in my tank, because they clean but are just big enough that my cowfish doesn't mess with them.
