Chris bought a Rans S6 Coyote and he asked me to ferry it home for him. The trip is about 450 miles starting in Quebec and ending in PEI. I made it half way on the first day before the wind and thermals became too much. Fortunately, the half way mark is right in Woodstock where I live so I didn't get stranded away from home.
-----------
Rans S6 Coyote
Rotax 582 with a 2 blade Warp Drive prop at 13.5° of pitch
Cruise: 85-90 MPH
Stall: 40 with the flaps up
Fuel capacity: 18.5 US gallons
Fuel burn: about 4.5 gallons per hour

What are your overall impressions of the Coyote? How would you compare it to a Kitfox, which you have experience with?
@mmatt
@mmatt 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't flown a Kitfox. I've flown an ApolloFox though which is a knock off of the Kitfox. Handling is very similar, the Fox is faster but the one I flew had a 912 so that would easily explain that. The Fox has a better fit and finish too but with enough money, the Coyote could look just as good. Overall though, they are very similar.

How is it you just happened to know a spot where you could land, stow your plane inside for the night and I assume stay in a hotel? How did you get to the hotel? Or do you know personally the owners of the airport? You didn’t know in advance you were going to need to land early, so how did you set that all up on the fly? Explaining that hole in your story would make a great new video.

That's my hometown and the airport that I normally fly out of. It just happened to be right inline with the flight and made for a perfect spot to stop.

Hi Matt, I've been watching most of your videos. Last year You came to my little town called St-Jean-Port-Joli to pick-up a Rans Coyote. I was gone a buy one in Montreal, but my problem is I need my ultralight pilote license. I'm ready to drive next summer 2021 to your place on my Little RV Roadtrek and spend time to get my lessons from you if it possible. My question is how much could cost for instructor & course on my plane? If I find one near your place or fly to your location from previous owner. I was looking for 2 models, Zenith Stol 701 or Challenger, or Rans Coyote. Thank You. Michel Goulet

@@mmatt Thank you so much. From now I will keep an eye to find my ultralight (used), but if you have somebody selling their plane, could be a good opportunuity. If you have any recommandations of types, I prefer advanced UL, so my wife and I could fly together on day trip. Woodstock is so close to Quebec, I'm a coach bus driver, I've done many trips from Toronto to Charlottown with Chineese people, and back in 7 days..loll. Back in 1989 has my experience, I fleon command with a Beaver DH owner close to 50 hours in 4 months, bethween 1,500' to 3,000' on floats, never landed of course..! Well hope to meet you very soon!

Why is the flap control an issue? I’m not seeing why you need to fly it from the right seat. Kitfox, Cessna and plenty others have flap lever in the center.
@mmatt
@mmatt 5 жыл бұрын
You fly a Cessna and (at least the ones I've seen) a Kitfox with your left hand freeing up your right hand to operate the throttle and flaps. No need in that situation to remove your flying hand from the controls. This plane has 2 throttle leavers which means that you operate the control stick with your right hand and the throttle with your left. To operate the flaps from the left seat, you need to switch hands on the control stick. Easier and safer to fly from the right seat where you don't have to do this.

Cross country in aircraft with 2 stroke motor......what could possibly go wrong, hahahahaha
@mmatt
@mmatt 5 жыл бұрын
Not much really as long as the motor is properly maintained. Look at the guy who flew his Aerolite 103 with a 2-stroke from Virginia to Oshkosh last month. Just about 1000 miles with no issues.
@FarmerTed
@FarmerTed 5 жыл бұрын
Really, what did you know about that motor other than his word before you left? I raced two strokes for years and years. Perfect maintenance and the best fuel and oil. I had good luck, but I know that when they fail they fail spectacularly! I’ve never had a partial failure, it either locked up or ran. Never anything in between. I’ve limped three lycomings home one with a jug blown in half. I applauded your decision to turn back due to low ceilings and wind it’s a great teaching tool for newbies, but long cross country with unknown to you two stroke not so much.
@mmatt
@mmatt 5 жыл бұрын
Racing 2-strokes and flying 2-strokes are two completely different animals. Besides, I avoid flying over unlandable terrain as best as I can and I practice engine out scenarios and landings constantly. It's all about being prepared. :-)

What app is that on your phone? Looks good. 🍺
@mmatt
@mmatt 5 жыл бұрын
Canada Topo Maps. It's not an aviation app, just a general hiking/biking/exploring app but it works quite well for flying as long as you add the airports you are going to visit as waypoints. You can even add the runways, frequencies, etc in the notes for each waypoint. Since I only visit a handful of airports, it works great for me. I'm planning on doing a video review of it sometime soon.

I have appreciated watching your videos of the Woodstock area and your flight down the Saint John River from Edmundston to Woodstock. I lived in Woodstock from 1967 - 1974 and my sales territory for Imperial Oil ran from Saint Andrews to the Quebec border so I am somewhat familiar with the area over which you are flying. I normally fly Cessna 150's and 172's from CYSA, Stratford ON and also spend a lot of time at Lubitz Flying Field CLB2, headquarters of the Ultralight Pilots Association of Canada. This video is taken from a Jodel D11 we recently rebuilt. It will give you an overview of CLB2 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbCpZqWgtNO4eWQ.html and this Flickr album provides highlights from an open house we held earlier this year flic.kr/s/aHsmDnu3Yx .I hope to be in Woodstock later this year, maybe we can connect for a flight.
