Tie between: 1. If the ball hits any part of your body and goes back over the net, it is still in play. 2. If you hit a ball that bounced out and was called out by your partner, it is still in play - "because you played it."

*Thank you* for including a PDF link to the Rule Book! I searched and found the answer to a question: 9.F. (A player may enter the kitchen *before or after* returning any ball that bounces.) In our group play, we *incorrectly* assumed that the ball *had to bounce* in the kitchen *BEFORE* we could enter the kitchen to make our non-volley play.

Great stuff! I had a question. Is it legal to hit an overhead after the ball has bounced in the kitchen?

If you mean the ball bounced in the kitchen but the bounce was so high you could hit a smash? Yes, the only think you can't do in the kitchen is volley.

Thank you for this explanation. I'm a mechanical engineer. My problem with this rule is the word momentum used in its definition. Momentum is defined as mass multiplied by velocity. To say that your momentum carries you into the kitchen after you are windmilling at the kitchen line is false. When you're standing at the kitchen line, spinning your arms in a circle, you have zero forward velocity and therefore you have zero momentum. It is not correct to say that my momentum still carries me into the kitchen if I'm fighting for balance, no matter how long that takes. If you hold your bicycle upright and let go, it's momentum is zero. It will fall, one way or the other, but it will not fall because its momentum carried it. The rule should be corrected to say that a player has to regain bodily control.

Great technical point! If you are a USA Pickleball member, you can submit rule change requests throughout the year that they take into consideration before announcing any rule changes each year. Might be a good idea to bring this wording to their attention.

Actually the rule specifies that to have "momentum" by their definition as utilized in the rules. Is voluntary or involuntary movement towards the kitchen. Regaining momentum is by moving away from the kitchen. So to answer the first question in the video more effectively. You can enter the kitchen after you've finished your volley i.e. moved away from the kitchen. They need better words for this. Momentum implies something different.

in case the player is indeed standing in front of the NVZ line, youre completely right. However, my pickleball trainings so far have shown me that most of the time people step in the NVZ after volleying the ball while moving towards the net. In particular, I see this in rookie matches.

What if after a volley you toe tap both feet behind the NVZ before going in? I feel like you've re-established yourself and can then step into the kitchen kind of like an NFL wide receiver toeing a catch inbounds before going out of bounds. Or kind of like being in the kitchen and going out, re-establishing both feet and then volleying a ball. The re-establishing both feet should allow you to "fall" into the kitchen.

As long as you have reestablished your balance you are fine. The receiver is probably not a good analogy since they are actually falling not balanced :)

What if the serve hits the player who is inline with the server not the interred receiver? Is it considered in even though it was served to the wrong side?

If the ball hits a player before it hits the court of out bounds it's a fault on the player.

What if you run forward to hit a short shot that bounces out of the kitchen and after you reach to hit it you can't stop yourself from entering the kitchen? Can you just leave the kitchen and continue play?

The NVZ isn't a vertical space, so if my toes are extended over the line but i'm not making any actual contact with the NVZ can I volley without a fault?

great explanation. what happens if you hit a volley and you're windmilling your arms to gain control. At the same time, the opponent hits a dink in the nvz that bounces in the nvz in front of you. Since it bounced in the nvz at that point, you should be allowed to step in and hit that ball, correct?? I'm basing that on Rule 9.F. "A player may enter the non-volley zone before or after returning any ball that bounces." It would seem that the "momentum" rule wouldn't apply any more. Please clarify.

You have to reestablish your balance. If you did that you are good. If the momentum carries you in it's a fault

@@BetterPickleball I had this same debate today. I told the person that they couldn't be (or fall into) in the kitchen before, during, or after a volley. No time limit, unless you regain control. They were saying it's okay if the ball is returned and crosses the plane of the net.... then it would be okay to have stepped into the kitchen.😮 It started to get heated, so I just let it go. Pickleball rules can be so controversial!!? Especially this one 😊

Because they falsely use the word momentum. There definition is any movement voluntary or involuntary towards the net. To regain momentum by that definition is to either regain balance. Or simply move away from the kitchen voluntaryily or involuntaryily @dgman3262

I'm of the opinion that as long as the volley is made legally, it should not matter if the momentum carries you into the kitchen. I hope they scrap this rule because I don't see any particular advantage in stepping into the kitchen after a legal shot.

So, the NVZ momentum fault only applies on a volley? So, if I come charging in to hit a groundstroke on a ball after the ball bounces outside the NVZ and my momentum carries me into the NVZ. That is NOT a fault?

@@BetterPickleball really? the ball did not bounce in the NVZ (essentially beyond it) and on my return my momentum carries me into the NVZ but that's OK (not a fault)? that sounds odd. I would think that I could only step into the NVZ if the ball had hit there first. Hmmm.

@@frankbarresi3480 as long as the ball bounces it doesn’t matter. Now if you hit a volley from outside the non volley zone and your momentum carries you in to the NVZ then it’s a fault.

I have a friend that goes into the kitchen and steps out very fast! He does it occasionally and I don't know if he does it on purpose or not.. He is known for cheating. 😆. What do you think?

If I hit a volley from outside the kitchen, how many seconds later can i step into the kitchen (if its not a follow through)....my opponent hit a legal volley and then few seconds later stepped into the kitchen....is that legal or foot fault?

There’s no time limit. What has to happen is the player needs to reestablish themselves out of the NVZ before coming in contact with the NVZ again it’s a fault. If you reestablish no fault

Rule 9B.1 seems awful and silly when applied after the ball is dead ie the ball has bounced twice or otherwise ended your opponents ability to return it. Windmilling after the ball is dead and ultimately stepping into the NVZ does not confer any meaningful advantage to the player who has volleyed the ball. Am I missing something here or is this an old rule that could/should be eliminated?

I feel like the player wouldn't have had the chance to hit the ball like they did, at the angle they did, etc, for the winning point if they hadn't used momentum to step in the kitchen. If they had been 12 inches farther back when they hit it, and didn't step into the kitchen, would they have had the same angle for the shot and won the point? I think that's why the rule is what it is.
