@@PickleballChannel So if I hit a volley from some where in the back half of the court and have to get into the "kitchen" quickly to return the dink or roller return I will loose the point anyway if I don't wait for the bounce. Or how about a game ending volley, don't walk to the net to bump paddles?

John Stevens based on this video, I would say that as long as both feet are out of the kitchen when you volley and your momentum does not carry you forward before or after the point, you would receive the point (if it is your serve of course). Hope this helps you understand the game a little better John.

Great! It is important to understand that NVZ is a ground surface, and the three rules use the word "contact/touch" for the NVZ , not "enter" the NVZ. So it is legal that you can stand with your feet outside of NVZ and use your hand across the NVZ line to volley, as long as your hand or paddle does not touch the ground suface! To be simple: "to volley, no touch!", that is it.

One thing I would like to see physically demonstrated by the pros is this. Some one serves a good serve but it is really short and just clears the kitchen. You run up and hit it after it bounces but your momentum carries you into the kitchen. I know this is not a fault, but you wouldn’t believe how many people say it is. People even say Well I play in tournaments and that’s how we play. The myth is that the ball has to bounce in the kitchen for you to go into the kitchen after you hit it. I know what rule 9F says, but you wouldn’t believe how strong this myth is, even among some 4.0 - 5.0 players. Thank you.

So, what happens when someone hits a very shallow serve, or volley that you have to run up for very quickly. You scoop it up, hit it over, and your momentum keeps you going of course. But you actually don't enter the kitchen until your 3rd or or 4th step. Does the momentum rule still apply and you lose the point?

What if my sweat drips in the non volley zone or if I sneeze and my spit goes into the non volley zone? By the definitions of the rule, those should be considered faults, right? Or what if a bird flies by and I hit into the non volley zone? Or a bug for that matter? I think these are important distinctions that need to be clarified.

@@MoBarclay that was one persons opinion. it was not part of you during play. that is like walking into the kitchen half a minute after a point is over. technically you entered the kitchen after doing a volley even after the point is over several hits later.
@squirrelchris
@squirrelchris 4 жыл бұрын
exactly, that is why that rule still needs clarification. Originally it was if the act of hitting the volley took you into the kitchen (or part of you or something you had on you). Now it is worded to include after the point is over 10 shots later potentially. keep it simple KISS rule. The return of your volley can take you immediately into the kitchen just to reach a ball bouncing just over the net on your side in less than a second after you hit it.

Yes, the 4:06 mark of the video... I'm confused about how long I need to stay out of the NVZ after I've volleyed. Let's say the ball is still in play. Am I allowed to step through the NVZ even in the *act of preparing* to make my next shot (regardless of what type of shot)?
@caryntroxell7962
@caryntroxell7962 2 жыл бұрын
@@Puckb0y It's all about momentum from that shot. Once you've reestablished a balance and have regained control of your stance...then it's okay. Like the video, if you're wavering and wobbling from making a volley, it would be a fault if that momentum carried you into the kitchen. It could be 5 sec or 5 minutes after making your volley.

I cannot tell you how many times people have called faults on me in recreational play when I step into the kitchen before a ball bounces (mostly if it tips the net so I can make it in-time) or if I "don't get out of the kitchen before the ball was hit again"... Also, side-note: Don't call foot-faults when your opponent is 6-inches away from the NVZ just to try and cheat your way to winning; you will be caught and nobody will want to play with you...!

Thanks for the comprehensive explanation about the NVZ. Here's one for you: That the NVZ is the TWO-dimensional space between the net and the back of the NVZ line is clearly understood. If, however, in the act of volleying, the front of the shoe of a player is over the line but the sole of the shoe does NOT touch the line, is this still a NVZ violation?
@PickleballChannel
@PickleballChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dereck, Thanks for watching. This is a fun one, and actually folks bring it up. Technically there has to be contact with the line/surface. While it is very very rare that the tip of a toe/sneaker would cross the line and NO weight be put on that toe so that NO contact is made.... but if in fact that happens, it is OK, it is NOT a Fault. We have joked about having curly toed Elf shoes that hang over the line but don't touch. Once again if someone is moving around and up and back and that toe crosses, it's likely that a ref in a split second might call a fault. It's also very likely that someone might stop and stand very still with their weight on their heels and say "look the bottom of the shoe at the tip of the toe does not touch." when in actual play and movement that part of the shoe does touch. Bottom line, the letter of the law says, if there is NO contact, it's NOT a fault. We hope you have fun and hope that everyone can enjoy playing. Thanks again for watching.

What's the ruling if both feet are established 3 inches before the Non-Volley zone line when you hit a winning volley and a second after the point is made you walk through the non-volley zone after the point is made? Is there a difference between off balance momentum into the non-volley zone or established balance stepping into the non-volley zone? How long does your feet have to be established outside the non-volley zone after a point is made on a volley? If the rally continues after a volley is made, when are you allowed to step in the non-volley zone?

Great video! I didn't understand when people talk about 'not establishing after (or before) the shot. But I do have one question: This is going to sound really picky but it could actually happen. Suppose you hit a volley and are leaning toward the NVZ, about to fall, but then you picked up your feet quickly, came down OUTSIDE the NVZ, and then stumbled into the kitchen? Would that count as your momentum carrying you into the NVZ, or would that count as establishing both feet after the shot?

Hi Kevin, Thanks for watching. I'm not sure I understand. Please clarify a little more. You say " are leaning toward the NVZ, about to fall, but then you picked up your feet quickly,..." If you are leaning forward as if to go into the NVZ, how could you pick up your feet quickly an not fall flat on your face? I'm imaging standing on the edge of a diving board, leaning forward, then picking up both feet, wouldn't i fall in? And even if I'm able to somehow pick up my both feet while leaning forward , how do i get them to go back? Wouldn't i then be even farther off balance? Maybe i'm missing something. Thanks for clarifying. We're happy to try to help

OK, let's say you're stumbling but you stumble sideways for a couple of steps and then into the kitchen. Do those sideways steps fulfill the 'establishment' clause? (In the mood for a little constitutional humor?) And if not, how do you prove the guy didn't step into the NVZ intentionally, anticipating a shot there? And does it matter if you're opponents have hit the ball yet? I know one guy who says the ball can go back and forth several times and you'd STILL be faulting if you fell into the kitchen. Really? Seems to me like once your opponents return the ball, you're clear. (On a philosophical note, it seems there are certain rules in some sports that are just impossible to get absolutely clear for every situation, but are still important rules. The NVZ foot fault rule may end up being Pickleball's equivalent of Soccer's "Offsides")
@PickleballChannel
@PickleballChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, we will try to answer sections. First, - "Do those sideways steps fulfill the 'establishment' clause? " - , doesn't matter the direction, if they keep "stumbling" into the NVZ (It's not only about feet making contact outside the NVZ), they have to be able to stop and control themselves. If momentum does not "stop" then entering the NVZ is a fault. Second - you technically can't "prove" the person didn't step their "intentionally". You , the other players, and the person possibly faulting, should be pretty confident it was momentum. And if there is no ball anywhere near the NVZ and they say they were giong for a ball, they might be fibbing. Third - at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rq2Wf7t1ueCuk58.htmlm6s it shows that even if others hit the ball and it's dead - then you fall it's a fault. So 100 hits and you fall in is a fault if you never regain your balance. Ludicrous, but people ask theoretical scenarios. Check out the section at 4:06. Fouth - maybe it is like "Soccer's Offsides" but hopefully still lots of fun. Keep On Playing

I ran into a lengthy discussion with someone (my partner) who said he officiates tournaments. I hit a shot in the air while standing at the NV line and won the point with it. We both looked down at my feet and he ruled that I was in the kitchen while I argued that I wasn't. My feet didn't move when and after I hit the ball and I hit it flat footed. However the point of contention was with the curved up part of my shoe that was over (but not physically touching) the line. He said that that didn't matter, that it was still a violation. I argued that because the toe of my shoe never touched the floor and the line then I was good and the point should count. I gave in because we had a large lead and eventually won anyways. Who was right?

Since the momentum of your volley caused you to enter the NVZ your shot was a fault. Every shot after it was nullified by the fault. Even if you teetered for a full minute at the line and then stepped in the point ended with your shot.

@jimh.4027
@jimh.4027 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidwebster7277 Depends on what's causing you to enter the NVZ. If it is the momentum from your last volley then that's a fault, even if it is many seconds after the point is over (think of an unrealistic situation where your momentum is causing you to fall into the kitchen and you are doing all you can to avoid going there and you're teetering on the edge for 15 seconds, then succumb to momentum and cross over into the NVZ, that's a fault, even if the ball is dead). On the other hand, if you have clearly stopped your momentum then you can certainly walk into the NVZ to pick up a ball or debris or anything else that would cause you to want to go into the NVZ vs back to the baseline. It's usually very obvious if its a momentum cross or a controlled cross. Never seen a questionable cross yet.

A player hits a volley from a few steps back from the kitchen line. Momentum carries the player for two steps. The player continues for a third and forth step into the kitchen without coming to a stop or pause. Is that momentum and a fault or player exhibiting control and therefore no fault?
@PickleballChannel
@PickleballChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. Thanks for watching. The key in your question is the word "momentum" The number of steps does not matter. Also, running into the kitchen after hitting a volley could also be legal. The only variable is if it is "momentum from, as part of, during etc a volley" So if in your example the player never seems to gain control of their body, if they could not stop from entering the kitchen, then it's a fault. (whether 1, 2, 3 or 7 steps) If a player hits a volley, then chooses to run into the kitchen, and if in this case it is clear it is NOT from "volley momentum" but a NEW action, (as in the volley is over, and now there is a choice to run) then it would also not be a fault. In general, try not to over think it too much. Almost every time the volley and momentum are clearly connected and a fault is evident. If there is a gap, then chances are it's not the momentum anymore. Bottom line, have fun and "Keep on playing"

Well prior to getting two feet down, the player takes a backswing that is clearly part of the volley stroke. Is not the backswing part of the volley?

Pickleballers please help me understand! After I hit a volley, I must keep both feet out of the non volley zone. When can I re-enter the kitchen? Does a step or hop with both feet outside the NVZ "establish" the player as eligible to touch the kitchen again? In other words, when does the "act of hitting a volley" end?
@PickleballChannel
@PickleballChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick! You've got it. As soon as both feet touch down you have established yourself outside the kitchen and can re-enter. At 5:28 in the video is where we talk about the two feet establish rule. Once you have established, you are free to enter the kitchen again...as long as you don't volley (or get hit by the ball!).

After you hit a volley, it is a fault if your momentum makes you touch the NVZ, even if the ball is dead. So, when can you re-enter the non-volley zone? Only on the next point?

As soon as you are "established" outside of the NVZ you can go in without fault. I gather that "established" is more of a balance/direction of momentum thing than anything else. Definitely no matter the amount of time elapsed, ball alive or dead, next shot, next point, or anything like that. Only have to be established outside the kitchen momentum-wise.

I am outside the NVZ with both feet. I move forward to volley and stop short of the NVZ when I volley but my momentum has me off balance still outside the NVZ. My opponent volleys my shot and commits a NVZ fault in the process. Shortly after they commit the fault my attempt to regain my balance fails and I step into the NVZ as a consequence of my initial momentum and commit my own NVZ fault. Whose fault has precedence? My opponent's since they were first to commit the fault? Mine, since my fault inducing momentum was initiated before my opponent's? Is this double NVZ fault the only mechanism for avoiding a delayed momentum induced NVZ fault? If my momentum carries me into the NVZ following a volley, I cannot be rescued by the point being over. Is my only rescue a NVZ fault by the opponent or are there other circumstances that can nullify my fault?
@PickleballChannel
@PickleballChannel 5 жыл бұрын
We would say the first fault actually committed is the one that takes precedence. Since you hadn't committed any fault yet, you are in the clear when you step in because the opponent has already committed the fault. We would probably agree that this might be the only way to be cleared from committing a NVZ fault. That's an intense situation and probably happening at lightning speed so if it's recreational play maybe go easy on each other and give yourselves a pass. Keep on Playing!

@@PickleballChannel Thank you. You are the first to offer an answer to this question. It actually happened when I volleyed the ball and hit the opponent who was still in the NVZ from the previous dink shot before my momentum carried me into my NVZ. This answer is most consistent with the spirit and intent of the rule in my opinion.

This is the way I talk about momentum into the kitchen. It’s a momentum rule, not a dead ball rule. The base kitchen rule is you cannot hit a volley while in the kitchen. So, even if you have a really great volley kill shot, but you are in the kitchen, you can’t hit it. Everyone is ok with this rule. The momentum rule supports this base rule. Again, if you have a great volley kill shot, but your momentum would take you into the kitchen, that’s the same as already being in the kitchen. So you can’t hit it. People want to say “if the ball is dead, the play is dead”. That’s not true. The momentum rule says even though the ball is dead the play is alive until the player who hit the volley has their momentum under control. So, it’s not the ball being dead that ends the play. It’s the momentum being under control that ends the play. Now with a ground stroke, momentum is not an issue. So a dead ball equals dead play. But with a volley, dead ball doesn’t mean dead play. Momentum being/not being under control determines end of play and who won the rally. You could actually demonstrate this by having someone hit a kill shot at the kitchen line and then flail around at the kitchen line. The announcer can say “The ball is dead but the play is still alive. The flailing player will either stay out of the kitchen or fall into the kitchen. At that point the play will be over and we can determine who won the rally” and you can have 2 endings. One with the player gaining control out of the kitchen and one with the player falling into the kitchen. . It’s a good rule. All it does is make players adjust their play like all the other rules do.

Beautifully said. Once you have control of your body, the momentum is ove and thus the play is not over until you have control of your body. A scenario that happened was the score was 10-9. The winning side hit a beautiful and powerful volley back, paused and then walked into the kitchen to shake the hands of the opponent. He did this before the ball hit the court on the other side. The other side said - wait a minute, you were in the kitchen on a volley - fault. He replied - No, I had control of my body before I went into the kitchen, therefore, no momentum - thanks for the great game

HI Rusty, quick question about one of your examples in the video (great video by the way, thanks). I understand the rule that both feet must come in contact with the surface outside the NVZ before hitting a volley, but in your example where you show the paddle scraping the ground in the NVZ just prior to contact with the ball, why is this a fault? The paddle touches the NVZ then is off the surface before ball contact. Next, and prior to the paddle striking the ball the player has both feet in contact with the NVZ before the paddle hits the ball. I would think in this example the player has established position outside the NVZ prior to hitting the volley. Can you please explain why this would be a fault? Thanks, Dave
@benmat1280
@benmat1280 6 жыл бұрын
David, I was wondering the same thing and was about to post the same question you just asked, since technically even though the paddle touched the non volley zone, every part of your body is established outside the NVZ before the paddle makes contact with the ball. (isn't it almost like when you step into the NVZ but then establish yourself outside like in 5:23 of the video). Curious about this.
@davidjeastman1
@davidjeastman1 6 жыл бұрын
I agree, curious to hear what Rusty has to say. Because if this really is a NVZ violation, then there must be some additional criteria other than “both feet making contact outside the NVZ” for what constitutes a legal volley.
@PickleballChannel
@PickleballChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Hi David! The fault you describe about the paddle scraping the ground (shown at 3:13) is a fault because the paddle touches the NVZ in the act of volleying. The actual rule is Rule 9B which states: 9.B. A fault will be declared if, in the act of volleying the ball, a player or anything contacting the player touches the non-volley zone. 9.B.1. The act of volleying the ball includes the swing, the follow-through, and the momentum from the action. 9.B.2. If the paddle touches the non-volley zone during the volley motion, before or after contacting the ball, it is a fault Having your feet established is part of the NVZ rules, but also includes other elements like the one above - 9.B.2. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Rusty

If I understand what you are asking then I don't think you can hit that particular dink on the volley. I mean, you are saying there's a shot coming in short, your paddle contacts the NVZ surface before you hit the volley. Are you trying to say that contact was not part of your act of the volley maybe? If that's the case then it should be clear that you are established outside the NVZ and no faults occur with the ACT of your volley (maybe while the shot was incoming you scraped your paddle in the NVZ while pulling it back and preparing to move it forward to tap the ball? perhaps you have a separate action there, thus not a fault and not a contradiction in the rule)

As long as walking in the kitchen isn’t considered part of the process of completing the volley it should be fine. If after the volley, the volleyer’s feet are outside the kitchen, and any momentum generated by the volley has stopped(& volleyer’s balance controlled) the volley process generally should be deemed complete. There isn’t a specific amount of time that has to elapse.

So, at what point after a volley can you step in the NVZ? If you hit a volly in the back court then take 5 steps into the kitchen is that a fault? If you hit a volley mid court on the run then see a short dink coming do you have to stop before stepping in? You could have stopped but you didn't because the play wanted you there. Seems to me there should be a 2 step rule after the volley that will save you from a fault if you have to make a play in the kitchen.

You cannot be in the kitchen and then jump in the air to hit the volley and land outside the kitchen, both feet must have had contact with a non-kitchen area prior to hitting that volley. Any foot that has touched the kitchen surface is considered still in the kitchen until it touches a non-kitchen surface. I hope that helps.

As soon as you have "re-established" yourself outside of the kitchen following your volley, you can go in without fault. So, that is, in the teeter-after-shot scenario, as soon as you are no longer teetering on the line, you are good to go. If you were running and hit a volley a few strides away and then decided to continue in that direction I don't know that you would necessarily have to come to a full stop in order to be considered "established" outside of the kitchen after the shot, but possibly so.
