I think it very much depends on who was playing Bond when you discovered the series as to who your favourite actor is. For example, Timothy Dalton has always been my favourite because his films were the ones that came out when I was in my early teens. The Dalton films really grabbed me in a way that the older films never had, but once I was onboard through Dalton, I was able to enjoy the films that I'd though of as old fashioned and boring beforehand. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't dislike ANY Bond movies. I think they're all great for what they are. But, Pierce Brosnan is my LEAST favourite of all of the Bond actors. For me, it's (obviously) Dalton, Craig, George Lazenby (although admittedly it's because of how much I love OHMSS as a novel and a film.) then Roger Moore and Sean Connery are equal and Brosnan comes last. Brosnan always seemed kind of...smug. And it doesn't help that some of the Brosnan movies are pretty terrible. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend the original novels. They're not all amazing. The ones set in America (Live and Let Die and Diamonds are Forever) are pretty skippable, actually. The Spy Who Loved Me is weird to say the least. And some of the language has dated....poorly. Surprisingly liberal use if the N word throws me out of the story every time. But they are a lot of fun as relics of another time and as adventure stories, and they give you a look at James Bond that you can't really get from a film. Also, Goldeneye is one of the great all time thriller films, even if I don't much like the actor.

The score of Goldeneye by Eric Sera, aside from the car chase with Onatopp, is absolutely perfect and is now iconic. I can't imagine another score for it. It's part of it's identity, and the opening gun barrel is by far the best of the entire series in my opinion. Brosnan is the most suave Bond ever and is the quintessential ideal image of the character that comes to mind for most people. So sad that the rest of his tenure was lackluster.

@pseudonymsarehard7189 2 жыл бұрын
@@firstblessings8777 There's no question that Tomorrow Never Dies has aged exceptionally well given the era of the internet and social media that we now live in. That said, the third act of TND feels like a completely different movie compared to the first two thirds of the movie, making the alleged incompleteness of the script blatantly obvious. Goldeneye, on the other hand, feels like a concise narrative from beginning to end, aside from Sean Bean not being old enough to have vivid memories of the immediate aftermath of WW2. Also, the way Sean Bean's character fakes his death at the beginning of the movie is pretty dumb. As someone who has followed oil-related geopolitics, I have a soft spot for The World is Not Enough. But, the problem with making Elektra both a Bond Girl and the Main Villain is obvious: it relegates Renard into a glorified love-sick henchman and relegates Christmas Jones to cheap eye candy I'll say what I've said earlier about Die Another Day. The movie prior to the ice palace is pretty damn good if you ignore the stupid gene therapy nonsense. But, once the movie gets to the ice palace, the movie goes pretty far off the rails.

I’ve never understood the hate that Die another day has been getting all these years. First of all it has 2 stunning ladies, Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike. Both of them are gorgeous and badass dames. Secondly the opening of the film is wonderfully over-the-top and action-packed and Bond’s imprisonment is gruesome to say the least. Beautiful locations, great action and a very bad Bond theme round out a very enjoyable film. I even like the villains ànd John Cleese!!!

The problem with Pierce Brosnan’s run as Bond was that while he a really great debut with Goldeneye was that he was saddled with sequels that were very sub par and very weak in the 2nd half. It did have a major first in that Brosnan Bond films Judi Dench got to be the first female M. She also has the unique position of being the first female M serving as the boss for 2 different Bonds. After Brosnan she also got to be M for Craig. Brosnan was the first Blockbuster Bond, as the filmmakers were looking to compete with other Hollywood blockbusters at the time.

Pierce Brosnan is the perfect bond. I realise this after watching No Time To Die! At first, Daniel Craig was a better Bond in the first few movies but then, it took itself too seriously like based on a true story drama action which is ridiculous considering the nonsense plot and motivation of the villains with so many contradictions and plotholes. Brosnan know how to balance between drama action and cheesy fun with just the right amount.

He was Bond when I was a kid, and I owned GoldenEye 007 on N64 when I was a kid, so he was the face of Bond in my generation. I later watched GoldenEye and loved it, it was the first Bond flick I ever saw and he instantly became one of my favorites since then. I loved his films, even though people give him crap for the later ones. I thought both Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough were excellent films, and Die Another Day... well, I don't hate it but... What on Earth did I just watch? But aside from that, I disagree with some people who say he is too "soft" to be Bond. Three examples would include 006 (Alec Trevelyan) from GoldenEye, Dr. Kaufman from Tomorrow Never Dies, and Elektra King from The World Is Not Enough. Those three kills in particular were brutal because in Dr. Kaufman's case, it was both partially revenge over Paris's killing and on a professional level, and with 006 and Elektra's deaths, both were at his mercy and were formerly people he trusted, and he pretty much killed them both with no hesitation as soon as he gains the upper hand in the fight. As for Die Another Day, honestly, his performance in it is fine for the most part, it's just that the story and main villain are just... really absurd. But in a way, that's kind of why I enjoyed it. It's so over-the-top that it's kind of amusing. Both Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike give great performances as the Bond girls of that flick, and the opening action scenes of the film are some of my favorite Brosnan Bond scenes ever. Though I kind of agree with you, I think Will Yun Lee's Colonel Moon prior to becoming Gustav Graves would have been a much better and serious villain than Graves. I also just kind of find it hard to believe that Colonel Moon is Graves, considering how in the beginning, we see Moon as this ruthless, merciless young North Korean colonel that has a pretty interesting scheme, to forcefully bring Korean unification by starting a war... but then he becomes Gustav Graves... who uses a giant laser in space to make a pathway for North Korea to invade South Korea... yeah, I have a LOT of trouble believing that these two are the same person... sure, they have the same motives, but was Moon's plan to create Icarus all along? Was using the gene therapy something he SUDDENLY came up with after faking his death, or was that also part of his grand master scheme? Yeah, I just don't get it.

Martin Campbell is one of the most underrated directors of his era. He made Goldeneye work and introduced Brosnan's Bond so perfectly. Then homie waltz's back in and recreates Bond AGAIN with the amazing Casino Royale. Campbell has a classical style to the way he shoots action. His camera and editing are on near Spielbergian level of mastery. You can tell he's one of those directors who not only watched Lean, Hitchcock, etc, but also ABSORBED internalized the technique. A truly great mainstream filmmaker. I have to say though, I like both Tomorrow Never Dies and the World is Not Enough a lot. Made the series feel really old. Dalton was a great Bond actor, but his movies just weren’t that well written. That being said, after Goldeneye, Brosnan’s movies kind of went the same way. I don't understand why the Brosnan Bond films have such a bad reputation. They were fun and action-packed and had the best Bond. Yeoh's character deserved a spin-off (more than the De Ames character from 'No Time To Die' that everyone has been advocating). That would have made money. Yeoh was a bona fide action star in her prime and, yes, this character overshadowed Bond in his own film.

Damn dude, I had no idea about Brosnan’s idea: Tarantino directing, Anthony Hopkins as the villain, and Sharon Stone as the Bond girl? That would have been some great filmmaking! That honestly sounds like lightening in a bottle! I think that would have been such a dope movie, but I’m inclined to agree that they probably wouldn’t get the same type of Bond movie with Tarantino running the show! Nonetheless, that scene you guys cut in (starting at at 18:11) with the Kill Bill music, combined with the opening of Tomorrow Never Dies--that made me laugh! To put a 🍒 on top of this comment, anytime I see Martin Campbell directing a Bond film, it’s ALWAYS good! I think he’s got the best imagination and visualization to what a Bond movie should be. He understands the essence of the Bond character and what we want to see!

Agreed, I think it was only outclassed by Goldeneye from Brosnan's era. This idea that the plot was silly seems a little strange to me. If you think too hard about any Bond film the plot is always silly and makes little sense. I thought Carver was one of the better villains it was something different and quite timely.

I love the scene with the assassin and than the garage scene. Also the idea about mainstream media controlling public opinion and gaslighting everyone to the point of war was really more like a prediction.(Say hello to war in Iraq and to the recent years of race riots just because of lying mainstream media)

The ending to Die Another Day could not come soon enough. When they started racing/fighting on the ice for the third time I was like, "Again?!" I saw Tomorrow Never Dies in theaters with my uncle and I have very fond memories of that film. I really liked the villains. As a child, I was actually kind of scared of them. Ha.

You can trash the movies all you want but Pierce as Bond is like everything we wanted from Roger Moore and more. He is the 2nd best Bond under Sean as far as I'm concerned. GoldenEye is the 3rd best Bond movie under From Russia with Love and Goldfinger

Brosnan is the goat. Best Bond after Connery. Goldeneye, TND, TWINE can easily be in anyone`s franchise top10. its unfortunate Craig`s run has lasted this long only because the predecessor is usually slammed during the new guy`s tenure. Dalton has justly seen reappraisal in recent yrs and hopefully Brosnan will soon if the new 007 is any good
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006

Think tnd and twine being in everyone's top ten is a stretch. Nothing to do with brosnan more the heavy reliance on the trends of the day.
@xexasperon
@xexasperon 2 жыл бұрын
@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 "anyone`s" top10, not "everyone`s", because it depends on preference of style as each era indeed relies heavily on the trends of the day. Brosnan in the romantic-antihero action blockbuster era (with Lethal weapon, Die Hard, Mission impossible), as opposed to Craig in the gritty antihero, comic book movie era (with Bourne, Nolan`s Batman, Marvel)
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 2 жыл бұрын
@@xexasperon sure, all bond films follow the trends of the day but late 90's early 00's was a confusing time, all jumbled up with no real identity just like tnd and twine. Dalton was the die hard era bond and Craig the Bourn era gritty bond Thinking about it no action movies during the millennium period really aged well.
@xexasperon
@xexasperon 2 жыл бұрын
@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 yikes. nope. Die Hard`s era was only starting when Dalton was ending. the "cunning romantic antihero" era most definitely identified the 90`s, including TND and TWINE (from McClane, to Hunt, Riggs or Bond), in contrast to the 80`s trend of "muscle" action movies (Stallone/Schwarzeneger). If anything TWINE is the last of these 90`s movies, before everything took a weird CGI turn in the early 00`s (MI2, Fast&Furious, XXX, DAD) - which is what you`re referencing as the movies that "didnt age well". These of course having been (misguidedly) heavily influenced by the innovative effects from the Matrix, and Star wars prequels.

9:13 Onatopp getting off every time she kills someone? Well, Adam Hall had one of the female assassins do exactly that in one of the (still epic) Quiller novels years previously (can't remember which one - they're ALL awesome) - recommended. Also, in terms of effects, Gerry Anderson once had a go at Derek Meddings in terms of Thunderbird 2 ("...wings too stubby, they're facing the wrong way, it would never fly..." etc.), Derek made the point that the bumble bee shouldn't fly either, yet it does. "Once it looks good, it'll work". Thank you Derek - RIP - we still owe you.

All Bonds except Brosnan had the material which matched their charm, he has the same air as Connery and Moore, the directors could have done something more vintage with him instead of absurdly modernizing everything. He was a perfect Bond, it's really sad that they used him so badly and he even wanted to do a remake of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Tarantino also would do something really interesting with Brosnan's Bond if they left Tomorrow Never Dies in his hands.

I'm sorry but TWINE is one of my favorites. Ppl say that it was the movie that had Christmas Jones but I challenge them that the movie tried something new with the main love interest turning out to be the main villain all along. That was a pretty nifty little twist.

Exactly . Yes, richards was miscast. No, it doesn't drag down the film imo. Elektra is a well written character that more than makes up for anything christmas jones lacks. First and only female main villain of the franchise. Pretty cool distinction

Of course Connery is James Bond, but the way Brosnan's blended the formula brought by both Sean and Roger is the reason why the franchise didn't turn into dust by the mid-90s. Still don't think any actor has delivered the line "Bond, James Bond" as good as he did in the casino scene of GoldenEye.

Some things I missed for Brosnan's 007: When he said Bond James Bond there never the Theme in background. LALD had a great intro when Moore said the words BJB.. with Names is for tombstones! a legendary line.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pierce was tops, although he lacked the swag confidence at times. For eg in The Matador he had the 007 swag. Plus, a decent guy off screen, like Roger. I can't support a guy like Craig who said he hates the role and does it only for the cash...and then demands 007 must be killed. The silver lining is that he'll never return. Maybe in Sourpusser.
