Piglet Weaning - Simple and EASY Process!
Today we are checking in on our new piglets and also showing some of our newly weaned piglets. We have recently weaned piglets from their moms using our piglet weaning box and catch pen. We show how we transported the pigs to their new weaning and training pen and talk about how we care for males prior to moving them into their new area.
Weaning piglets is an important process for their health and the health of the sows. Our piglets are weaned at 8 weeks old so they have a good jump start on life.

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on meeting your goal. With that in mine, I like how you would like to set new goals. What caught my eye on your videos is your knowledge, application, cost, good bad and ugly, equipment, and experience. I am not a big fan of long videos, but I do stick to the end of most of your videos. I have not explored all your content, but I do feel that you are in the right track in the approach of content people would like to learn. I am just a viewer with no experience in any of you tube or raising farm animals. Things that interest me is review of what has worked and not worked, follow up on content, viewing some chores with narrated content as to why you are in a particular situation, trying new products, in-depth of topics, time laps of changes in the farm. Just some ideas from a random viewer. Keep up the great work.

With the way you guys are growing here lately I’d say 15 to 20,000 subscribers is an obtainable goal. One million views? I this the content is the hard part. Most of the time I shoot for the stars and fall on my face but I keep getting up and trying again. Please keep your content real! I love Daniel over at Arm’s Family Homestead, but when he got to the point that he retired and went to work on nothing but KZfaq? His content went all over the place! Very happy for him but wasn’t what I wanted to watch anymore. As far as how you can help us? You have helped so many people already and as long as your farming and filming your helping. I keep having technical difficulties. I spend a few hours out filming and then the editing software I’ve tried has taken me forever!! Sometimes it’s works great and sometimes it takes longer to edit then to video. Keep doing what you’re doing. Congrats on the surge in subscribers!!

Thanks man! Appreciate the kind words and the feedback. Agree his content has taken some turns. Maybe he (and me somewhat) are just trying too hard. I heard a guy say, "don't create, just document what you are doing" and those video see to do the best. The unplanned, just shoot footage ones. Sorry you are having editing issues. I'm using iMovie on a Mac. Don't have any experience with anything else. you are putting out good stuff. Keep grinding and it'll come.

Same here. I’m turning up the volume in editing to the point it is almost clipping. Actually does a little so I’m not sure where the problem is. Well, I for one can't get enough of your videos and your content... I agree on the sound, it's hard to hear you, so I turn up the sound all the way and then scare the wife when the ads kick in at full blast, lol... but other than that, your content is perfect and what I would expect of this faming genre... full of detailed easily digestible information... some of us are actually trying to decide whether the farm life style is for us as well. as you mentioned in a previous video, you to were commuting an hr+ to and from work everyday, prolly stressed as heck tied to the "golden chain" job, etc... well, I for one, see myself as you were and feel the need to get back to a simpler life in my later years... so not only am I living vicariously through your videos (and others, I admit but I find myself gravitating to yours more often than not), but I'm trying to soak in as much information and strategies as I can from you and everyone else I watch... so your content is really helping me out and giving me the confidence to make a decision in the near future... I wouldn't change anything in your delivery or anything else... since you asked though, I'd love to see more numbers on how you come out profit wise, like one of your recent videos where you went over specifically how much you roughly made from the sale of three pigs.. we'd love to know where you find you make more money, public markets, auctions, packing companies, selling direct, etc... we're in Texas... thank you and God bless you, your family, your farm and your channel!!

Stick with what you know Sheraton Park Farms!!! This means stick with the business side of small scale farming and updating us on how the farm/animals are doing daily. It's that simple my friend! Many of us love the "hard data" you include when talking about the business side of farming. Those numbers help us decide if starting a farm business is financially right for our families. Also, not all videos have to have "hard data" or even a theme. Just an update on how the farm is doing, next plans for the farm, how the animals are doing is usually plenty enough to keep us "hooked" and wanting more lol. Good Luck in 2021 and let's hit 10,000 subs!!

Posting the successes and the non-successes ( only a failure if you don't learn something from it lol ) is what most of this homesteading community is looking for. I used to castrate up to 50 pigs at a time at 4 weeks old. After I cut my dad's thumb twice in a row while he was holding the pig, we went to using a bracket that clamped on the fence. It held the pig upside down by his legs that were easily inserted into the bracket and effectively immobilized the pig despite him desperately trying to squirm free. This was 48 years ago. I don't know if that bracket is still available now but it turned castration into a one man job. Our little pigs had the exact same reaction to the iodine treatment on the scrotum but we had clean straw instead of dirt as they grunted dragging their butts like a dog with hemmeroids. We never had any infections or bad outcomes. Four weeks is a good age for castration. Any earlier and there's not enough there to grab on to. Our dog would anxiously stand by waiting for his meatball dinner. A few hours later you couldn't walk from the house to the barn without that dog accosting your leg.

shoot for the best and accpt what you get. In otherwords, do the best you can and the results will follow. By the way in going to a pig breeding seminar at Oklahoma state Universsitty, they recommended that we castrate our pigs the day after birth and some suggested the day of birth. Pig's are much easier to handle , the smaller and this goes for clipping the needle teth and docking their tales as well.

Thanks for the encouragement. We are trying to put out content that folks enjoy watching. Agree that they are easier to handle at that age. Your audio volume was kinda low, during this video I was listening and there was an add that came in and it was considerably louder... your thoughts about castration are pretty much spot on..one thing I've always believed is that non stress butchering makes for better tasting meat whether doing it on the farm or at the processor. Boar taint can come from hormone release in the bloodstream. If I can remember my dad always tried to castrate at about 5 weeks not sure but, roughly about a week before weaning..the younger you can the less stress on the pig and the owner we raised feeder pigs for sale they went to market at between 60 and 70 lbs.. Also pigs that are going to be transported need to accustomed to the trailer. Put the trailer in the pasture or lot and feed and water them in it Maybe take them for a ride their comfort level goes up and stress is reduced .

Anyway, I've had this idea... what do you think about sowing the radish, turnip, etc. type of cover crop blends on pig pasture when rotating them out? Would it produce a significant amount of food for them? How would the timing work? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your content. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

That is a real possibility. Have heard of folks doing it. Wouldn't be too hard to do but would need to bring the pigs back onto a paddock at harvest time. The difficulty would just be in the planning. We may give that a try. Thanks for watching. We are trying to put out good stuff that folks enjoy watching.

I think to show a little more of your family life and really promote your birthing process. Everyone likes seeing baby farm animals and watching them grow. So if you really promote the birth and the babies you will definitely get way more views. I am far from a farmer but really enjoy watching and learning.

Please pick up on storylines in your farm and create sequence of videos to keep the viewers coming back. For e.g., there could have been more follow up videos on Helen, as to how she is recovering and how she got eventually shipped off. I love your channel.

I’m going watch your videos religiously no matter what you are one of 4 that I will always watch , right from the beginning . I like the honesty and the down to nature. Pretty soon you guys will run out of ideas and it will be harder to get new information. You will have to re due video maybe with better results. I think you will get to a point where we the viewers will just want to see you guys and it will be like a blog type channel. I watch Lumana acres every day and have for years. I think u will become like that if you have the time to do it. If you don’t have the time. Don’t because you will burn yourself out. Talk to Troy from Red tool house. He posts one or 2 times a week. It’s all up to you and your better half. It’s a lot of work. I appreciate it. I’m hoping you guys get enough money to do the things you want to on the farm. I think you should figure out how much money you want to generate from you tube and go from their , figure out how many subscribers do you need? How many views you need ? etc. I’m hoping you can build a little store. Well what ever you do I will look forward to it and if I ever think of anything for Sandra to build I will let you know 🤪! Todd

I enjoy y'all's channel . I'm getting a couple piglets to grow out in a few weeks. My cousin has a new litter of Burskshire pigs. I've watched your channel and several of the ones you mentioned. I'm trying to bite the bullet on hot wire vs panel and hot wire. My issue is I have a railroad track to my north about 200 yards and a 2 lane highway to my south about 400 yards. On my property I have room and a great place to pasture pigs to feed out. I'm just concerned about them getting out. I've even considered premier 1 netting which I put around my garden to keep deer out. If possible give me a idea of your issues with pigs/hogs getting out. I've never seen anybody show this when they are trained to electric fence. Thanks I myself love your show as it is.

I really like your channel. The audio is sometimes hard to hear. The reason I like your channel is your doing what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm using the pigs to bring my ground back as it was over run with alders. I'm about 60% complete and in a couple years should be all done. Being up here in Canada the challenges are a bit different than yours just due to snow load and cold. My pigs are still outside but contained n a small area with deep bedding. As of right now I have two sows and a boar and going to increase to 5 sows next year. I'm hoping your channel at least doubles in subscribers. The content is perfect for me as I try to mimic what your doing on my small farm. Thanks for all that you share. Keep up the great work!

I watch your channel because it pertains to my interests, I have a similar farming operation in southern Ohio, generally the same weather and same terrain as you, so I learn a great deal from you. I would think that if you want to increase your subscribers and views, you will have to branch out into other areas of the farm, that of course is my uneducated and inexperienced opinion.

Well I don't know what your goals should be but a couple of ideas I have to increase viewership are live cameras so we can watch the birthing process and baby piglets growing with Mama. Maybe a live farm camera, just a broad view of different areas of the farm at different times. Live education Q and A such as show us how to tell a guilt that has ideal hips for birthing versus the narrow hips on a pig that would not be good for breeding. Just all-around education why you do what with your pigs chickens, why you seed a certain seed, care of your creeks Etc. I noticed you don't give your pigs access to the creek and originally I thought that would be a benefit to the pigs but now I'm watching you manage your farm I'm wondering why you don't give your pigs access to the creek. I'm thinking it might be a better idea to not to give pigs access to creeks for sake of the creeks health, things like that would help us understand some of the things you do and educated us. Thank you for including us.

@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
First, calculate your costs. How much did it cost you to produce the piglets? How much was feed for the sows during the past 4 months? What other costs do you have such as keeping a boar, fence, labor, etc? Divide that by the number of piglets you have which will give you a "cost per piglet". Now determine how much profit you'd like to capture. 30%, 40%? Do some research locally and see what others are selling for. Then use all that information to determine what your price should be.

The number of subscribers and views is not as important as the educational value of your presentation of your operation. Practice your public speaking skills. When it comes to content, every aspect of the farm operation is important to making the farm a viable operation. Best of luck on your journey in farming. Don't forget that someday you must pass this operation on to some younger person. Finding and incorporating that person is probably the hardest part of all. Be sure to give a short "like and subscribe and share" promotional speech at the beginning and end of your video. This helps your videos to be seen by more people.

Thanks. I try not to but piglets any more but we had to get a few to have for processing later this year. Cost depends on quality. Pigs that come from a good proven line that does well on pasture can be in the $125-$135 range. Pigs that are excess piglets from a CAFO operation can be as cheap as $20-$30.
