Hey Chris, love and appreciate what you do here. Any particular place behind the ear? I just got my first few feeder pigs and I'm a little nervous about getting this wrong. Also, I could only find the big pistol grip surringe. Where do you get those smaller disposable ones?

My grandparents use to save their dishwater and water their pig food down with it every day before they feed the pigs. They said the dishwater would keep them from getting warms? Most of the old-timers where we live in WV all used dishwater. The soap in the water flushed the worms
@HomesteadingtheHardWay

It doesn't help with the worms it does have some beneficial nutrients. To much will give them diarrhea. They used lye mixed with grain to worm pigs for about a thousand years then arsinic came next until the early twenty's . I've necropsied pigs wormed with every home reamdy wormer and found worms to be the cause of death/unthriftyness . That's without mentioning lung or liver worms .

I used CO-OP PIG WORMER SAFE-GUARD from the Tennesssee Co Op. It cost me .70c a pound. You substitute it for their feed for 3-12 days (I did 3). It is a 16% feed as well.
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 4 жыл бұрын
I used to use Atguard mixed in the feed it worked good but they stoped making it. Have to use this now , parasites are resistant to safe guard mostly from to low a dose then when you bring new stock in you get resistant worms as a bonus a big problem down here especially with hogs and goats
@Bits-of-Bytes

@@HomesteadingtheHardWay Good to know. This was my first time raising feeders and I enjoyed the heck out of it, learned a lot. I liked your trick about using the hog panel as a restraining aid to give shots. Next time I need to be better prepared and give them their shot the day I pick them up.

@@Bits-of-Bytes that's the best way a shot in the trailer, but safe guard may still work fine up there just be sure to give them enough . The Ivermection is .50 cent a pig and never fails YET but it'll stop working one day

Love the pig tips. We used some sort of worming feed from our feed mill. It was in a pellet like form. Real expensive though. What do you think about that?
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 4 жыл бұрын
It must have worked you pigs sure didn't look wormy but I worry a lot about dosage on wormers because if you don't use enough you make the parasites resistant which is a really bad thing

I've got two young female pigs. They are around 50 days old. One is getting bigger and is twice the size of the other one. What advice do you have to fix that? The runt doesn't weigh more than 20lbs I would guess. Like I say the other is significantly larger
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay Жыл бұрын
I would definitely worm them first with an injection of ivermectin . Make sure you're feeding a decent pig feed 16 percent protein would be ideal at that age but the problem could be genetic and unfortunately you can't fix that . I did a video ( good pig versus bad pig ) I wasted a lot of effort and feed trying to bring those pigs around

@HomesteadingtheHardWay

Safeguard has to be fed according to the directions to the letter or parisites get immune fast . Because of that it doesn't work around here that doesn't mean it won't work in your area . Give it a try it's definitely easier

Water some of the symptoms you should watch for in freshly weaned piglets that they may have worms I got theys and they are 10lbs got one with scours and on the thin side is eating gave them all around of antibiotics To all cleaned up perked up and are eating even him but still thin and Scours and sneezes
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like they were weaned WAY to early , probably caught pneumonia . They can basically be born wormy so it would probably be best to treat them . Scours can be caused by a lot of things , changing feed , to much protein , antibiotics , stress , heat , parasites , bacteria , if there only 10lb and weaned you're going to have to baby them , feed pig starter , and keep them out of the weather really good . On the ground pigs should be 5 to 8 weeks old and at least 30 lb at weaning ( for standard breeds ) and we worm them at weaning and they normally need it
@BTech5
@BTech5 4 жыл бұрын
@@HomesteadingtheHardWay Thanks yes 10lbs is small the people we got them form had 100s from pig farms that cant send them to butcher plants because they are closed I just want to see these little guys through to big healthy pig what is a good worm one mite use
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 4 жыл бұрын
@@BTech5 ivermection is the best , commercial piglets normally aren't wormy ( not a problem on concrete ) . We have the same thing going on here , most people are saving over half . Big difference between in the hog house and outside lot of stress on a baby like that .

@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 4 жыл бұрын
Could be pneumonia or some other respiratory infection or overheating . White scours normal comes with a change in feed , weaning or some other stress inducer .
