Well apart from the times he was mind controlled. Most times pikachu lowered the voltage so it wouldn’t hurt ash. Same with charizard it lowers the heat from the flamethrower so it’s not actually burning him. If ash got shocked with that black lightning thunderbolt that we saw him do to Leon’s charizard then ash be dead.

At one point in the XY anime in the power plant Clemont basically went "stuff this ash gets too much attention" and after ash got zapped by Pikachu he started copying him by hugging Luxio who was also shocking him. I guess getting zapped by electric types is contagious.

I still remember when Ash and Pikachu had difficulty getting along. Ash was new to the whole trainer gig and had trouble just getting Pikachu to listen to him. He had to work hard to earn Pikachu's trust.
