I'll never tire of your unique stlye and delivery for reviews. One minor thing was I was caught off guard when you mentioned the music quality. The volume on it was so low that I didn't notice it until I cranked the volume after you mentioned it. Not a big deal though. This was another fantastic review.

I could hear that there was music playing but didn't notice that it was playing (if that makes sense) until he mentioned it. That in my opinion is a huge plus for a soundtrack. Too many soundtracks try to be all bombastic and Hollywood like but that only ends up taking away from the scene IMO

When I initially played this, I was a bit lost on the mechanics of the game, so left it. I have been playing BG3 with the 5e rule set, which is fairly easy to grasp, so decide to give this ago and find now I can almost grasp the mechanics. Great game, honestly finding it as much fun as BG3, moreso. Love that old school feeling.

I don't get how these rule sets hold people back. I have no idea what the hell most of them are talking about but have no trouble playing these games even on the higher difficulties. You just have to experiment on making a decent character and with the skills. Than like any other game get good gear and use the holy trinity tank, dmg dealer, and healer. Still have no idea wth a thaco score is or how dice roles affect the game besides missing a attack or lower dmg.

Awesome review! I really enjoyed the candid take, it's so rare to see someone expound on what they dislike without needlessly tearing the game apart and calling it 'sh*t'. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but i can't help but feel people are too quick to rip something apart without constructively reviewing the game and taking into consideration that just because there is a feature or mechanic that they dislike, it doesn't make the whole endeavor a waste of space, or an objectively horrible experience.

fantastic review. ive been on the fence for this game since it launched lmao.. I know its good, but not sure if I'm ready to dive into it (ever). Point is, I've watched many reviews about this game over the years.. I genuinely think this is the best one I've ever seen. you strike a great balance between being incredibly detailed, but never lingering too long on a subject.. also explaining game mechanics without getting bogged down looping about your feelings regarding them, while still sharing your personal experience and thoughts. I think this is well written and you've got a talent for it. Love your voice too.. it's so smooth and full. You sound like someone who woulda had a children's TV show on PBS during the 80s/90s. Your presentation style is great.. your voice is animated and engaging, you know when to change inflection to spike a viewers interest without having it come across as manufactured. You're talented. I must subscribe.. thanks for your work buddy.

I remember how happy I was when this game came out. It took me somewhere around 80 hours to complete my playthrough of main story (no DLCs at that time) because I found reading in-game books fascinating. I also love the conversations with companions, especially Grieving Mother and Durance. In my humble opinion they have probably the heaviest adult oriented lore in their conversations. Then I would have unimaginably hard time to say who would be next as the adult theme heavy hitter. Would it be Eder or Aloth (both played by Matt Mercer). P.S. I am still hoping that Obsidian goes through with full official TTRPG product for that world instead of doing just paper beta of in-game system as a trial run.

What you said about locks reminds me of my current experience in BG1EE, where practically all locks were too hard for Imoen in the first inn (Friendly Arms) and first village north, until she was level 2 and I put all my points in Open Lock (25 to 50). (next level will be Find Traps :P)

Not sure if this is included with the Steam version but my GoG copy came with 3 full books in PDF form. One was a guide for the game that fleshes out some stuff the game doesn't explain, another was a lore rich novel and the third was a cookbook with actual recipes of stuff that exists in game. All written by the game's main writer. I love when games do stuff like this... Mostly cause it's so rare.

I loved your review and glad you enjoyed imo a masterful crpg. I'd just add about the overall tone of the game: the music, dialogue, visuals are all designed to be thematically appropriate to the mature story - no sudden, bizarre, out of place, comedy relief npcs or companion quests; yet there is still humour. That alone makes you buy into the world much more deeply and I think was masterfully achieved, considering this was a kickstarter project but became so much more.

I liked it but for me it was way too verbose. And I'm not scared of words, one of my favourite games of all times is Planescape Torment. However, with Pillars of Eternity I felt that much of the text was just filler and was uninteresting to read. I found myself skipping large parts of the dialogue, especially with companions. If they edited and cut at least 30% of the text, it would have been stellar. Similarly, Tyranny had a lot of text but I found it to be more interesting, I never skipped it. On the contrary, I felt Pillars of Eternity 2 to have simplified a bit, cutting down on the amount of reading, but it felt way too trivialized. More like a videogame, less like a novel. I probably enjoyed it more as a game but PoE 1 left more of an impact on me in terms of story.

I love this game, but my love of necromancy leaves me wishing they had put a necromancer type class in the game. The closest I've seen in game to this was a chanter, but the "undead" options of this are very low level, and do not have any long term use. I also wish I could speak with my party members, not just run through the scripted quests and options at those times. You are correct, thought, the combat system was a steep learning curve at first. Having a wizard with high Might if I wanted damage is a new experience. Lastly, My biggest gripe with the game (aside from the lack of a necromancer (and there are NPC necromancers, so you know it was an option!)), would be the world building early on. My first exposure to the game, I had no idea what anyone was talking about in regards to the Hollowborn crisis and how this affected people. Once I had the lore under my belt, this was a lot better.

If not the best, then certainly one of the best RPG's of the RPG revival period, while also being one of the first. To add to that, it's also probably the only game that at least in spirit came close to the original Baldur's Gate 1. Also, IMO, one of the most underrated and personal favorite combat system an RPG came up with. Such a shame the sequel while fixing some of the accessibility issues, completely butchered the legacy of this game.

@@SlanderedGaming at least for me, the 3 main reasons: 1. The characters in the sequel are much less memorable, in fact, i only remember the once that makes a come back; 2. The start of the game essentially spits on the entire first game story line and undoes everything you built and fought for here; 3. The reduction of the party size and the replacement of fort management for ship management just didn't do it for me. Especially the former. In a game system like we have in PoE, where tactical positioning matters just as much if not more then the choice of skills and spells, the reduction of the party size plays a major role in how much options are available to us as players. I found it extremely strange how much i miss that one extra character when going from 6 to 5, then say when going from 5 to 4, or 4 to 3. Not only do we lack an option as a slot, but also the rest of the party is robbed of build options, because they have to cover the missing man/woman. Some builds just become less viable. And this IMO means poorer gameplay.

This game offers outstanding number of ways to deal with every enemy. The combat is too fast though and should have been turn based. The system itself is complicated and requires heavy studies of the manual.
@SlanderedGaming
@SlanderedGaming Жыл бұрын
Yup I agree. I probably wouldn't feel the micromanagement as much if it was turn based.
@arkadiuszjandylewski152

The problem is that dozens of things happens in a fraction of a second. The combat log is filled with such a high number of events that it is impossible to know what exactly is going on the battlefield. Very often I need to pause the battle and scroll through big amounts of text to find out whether my spells worked or not. Area of effect spells are close to being useless in open areas, because enemies are moving too fast. If there are more than 3 enemies it is impossible to keep track on what is actually going on. I do not know, whether this combat system is simply outdated or it is not my cup of tea. I prefer turn based systems therefore I prefer Jrpgs.

I tried my best to convince her not to kill a few random folk, but utterly failed... and I was not pissed off; I mean the game succeeded at making me feel fine about rolling with the story (immersive). This game best to play real time combat, dont ever try touch the turn based, if not you will hate this game - every combat can spend you like 20 mins, and it will get worst later. Luckily 2nd have 4 speed, unlike 1st, so even real time combat still able to manage and have a lots of fun. Flanking need 2 players on demon opposite side, which you need to move melee damage dealer all the time - unless you have rogue talent. I think in 2nd, they are more favor multi classes, only magic nuker need to be full class, but still, multi class get way more benefits.

The common criticism I read about this game, which I loved, is that the main plot is not enticing or exciting for many players, who find it too slow and some find it more philosophical than grounded. I understand those players, but personally the stories/quests and voice-acting of the companions and the DLCs, the exploration, was a great immersive experience for me... And I cleared the entire... grueling endless paths of Cad Nua (oof!). The last parts of the main quest was the line I followed only when I was ready to finish the game (you need to do the two DLCs beforehand). That aspect is also in PoE2: you hold off the main quest ending until you are satisfied with doing all the side quests and DLCs you want, again making the core story feel sort of secondary. I loved playing them, but I cannot disagree the pacing of the main quest line is sometimes odd (I had to read wikis, do some meta thinking, not to go too far too soon. In reality, the game warns you clearly if you reach the endpoint, but the point about pacing or sequence remains).

Excellent review. I must confess, I don't like Pillars 1. I just hate the real time with pause combat, it's the worst combat system ever. Either go turn based (my preference) or Diablo-esque if real time. Pillars 2 and the Pathfinder games at least offer an alternative turn-based version although it is obvious that it wasn't their first choice. If it wasn't for the terrible combat I'm sure I would have enjoyed it. The story is interesting, they seem to have excellent companions.
