A little context: Ive read elsewhere, that the off-duty pilot was actually a fully qualified and certified pilot, but for another airline, who was flying as a passenger. Kudos to both him and the 1st officer for the handling of this - and for the off-duty pilot getting the callsign for a different airline right every time! Also, apparently the reason, that the plane needed to be tugged into the gate, is, that its only the captain's side, who can do that (something about the nosewheel stearing, if I remember correctly), and the off-duty pilot had ofc sat there, and being from a different airline he wasnt allowed to do it. One could argue, that in an emergency he was certainly qualified to do it, and if it could get quicker help to the captain, maybe they shouldve broken the rules, but I assume, since the FO earlier stated, that the captain was alert and with a doctor, that they felt, it was ok. And on a personal note, Southwest might not have the best reputation, but this is the kind of FO, I would want in an emergency!

You could argue that the rules are out of the window in an emergency, but you could also argue that from the moment the plane was standing on the ground, it was faster to get paramedics to the plane than vice versa. The best way to deal with the emergency (which was purely medical at this point) was to get the Captain the medical attention he needed asap, therefore the crew made the right call not to taxi to the gate but instead have a much faster paramedics vehicle come to them. Kudos to the crew. As far as I can tell they did an outstanding job.

Yes very chilled calm collected and let’s do this. I have actually seen a couple of these and funnily enough the FO has been just the same on each of them! One of them was horrendous as the FO was communicating all the time it was a medical,emergency the captain had a heart attack and at no time was it communicated back to him even when he requested several times to have paramedics at the gate! Absolutely no feed back it was insane! And of course the paramedics weren’t there to meet them! The captain owes his life to the 2 Drs being onboard (1 being a heart surgeon) and an ER nurse. The definitely would be dead otherwise!

@@sheilasullivan1950One pilot in the cockpit increases the flight safety risk considerably. A pilot may get incapacitated as in this case or they may get slightly ill, as in lightheaded. This could affect his/her decision making. How can we let a single person hold hundreds of lives in their hands without a backup plan? Yes the CEOs only understand $$$ but if the accidents increase and they will, their payout will be much higher than any salary savings.
@jordane7483
@jordane7483 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. A plane itself has “back ups to the back ups” and that’s what makes it so safe to fly. Having a back up pilot essentially jus makes sense to me. Going down to one would cause a uptick in accidents for sure.

When I was flying as a passenger in the cabin, I would always hand the Lead Flight Attendant my company business card with my type ratings on it to give to the cockpit crew for an event such as this. My procedure as the captain, in the event of an incapacitated crew or passenger was to ask for an EMT, a nurse and then a doctor in that order. In 30 years, I only diverted twice. I was appalled that the idiot “medical” person on the ground, having never seen the patient nor bothered to talk with me, overrode my request and refused to authorize the pilots to land early. Having practiced my specialty for 30 years, I know an emergency when I see one. The care this woman received was criminal imo. I should have taken this matter to the highest level and I’m mad at myself for not pursuing that course of action.

I'm getting to like this channel, but when you draw the "colour bar" showing where the plane has been, you should probably use the green colour for indicating level flying, but switch to the red colour for descent (maybe orange for mild descent) and switch to blue when indicating a climb. In other words, use the colours of the rainbow to indicate change in altitude. You could, instead, use the colour to indicate absolute altitude instead of change in altitude, but I don't think that would be as helpful. In general, green means good so it's probably the right choice for no change in altitude. Another alternative would be to use coloured dots along the flight path to indicate change in altitude. That might work also.

It's possible the FO didn't have enough training to switch to the captains seat and use the tiller for steering on the ground. I'm sure the other pilot and the FO talked about going to the gate or stopping on the runway, taxiway, etc.

No idea what happened. From CNN: A nurse who was also on board helped care for the pilot, the airline said, without releasing further details on the pilot’s condition. “The captain became incapacitated while enroute. He’s in the back of the aircraft right now with a flight attendant, but we need to get him on an ambulance immediately,” a member of the flight crew is heard saying in air traffic control audio from LiveATC Although a comment I saw said the pilot had appendicitis. Take with a grain of salt

Are flight attendants trained as EMT's ?
@deaogata7250
@deaogata7250 11 ай бұрын
Flight Attendants are not trained for certification as EMTs, however we do go through extensive medical training while in the academy. We are trained to perform first aid as well as CPR, and permitted to use certain medical equipment that is kept onboard in the event of an emergency, such as an AED and oxygen. However, only certified/licensed medical personnel (EMT, nurse, MD) are legally permitted to give injections, start IVs, or use any of the medication or other controlled items which are kept in a locked and secured location onboard the aircraft. Thus the need to ask for assistance from any medically trained and licensed personnel who are on the flight.
@bruces4515
@bruces4515 11 ай бұрын
@@deaogata7250 Actually, with an EMT you have to define it further. EMT I - mo meds, just O2. These days they might be able to use an AED. ---- EMT II can start IV's EMT - III - paramedics - drugs and defibrillator. They have much more experience in the wild field than the GP's that are giving orders. Watch them "smoke." ---- So, it appears that every time a pilot goes down they leave the body in the seat and let it rot. ----- On a passenger flight, you could get a couple of football players to get the pilot out, and onto the galley deck where there is room to work. ( If that bothers the psychotically paranoid, put the air marshal on the squad. The steward(ess) knows which head has a gun under it.) They need to get their priorities straight.------ Emergency care would not interfere with the co-pilot's job. This would actually give the co-pilot a chance to get into the command seat.
