Taking a look at the Eheim Biopower 200 internal aquarium filter.
Water flows down from bottom to top through a coarse foam and media (optional) and the pump sits at the top of the filter. It holds a reasonable amount of media (300g or 0.65 lbs of biogravel / biogravel marine) making it suitable for a tank of around 30-50 litres (7.9-13.2 US gallons) for a full cycle.
Well made filter for a small tank.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

Anyone who sends a filter will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win.
Please do not send any filters without contacting me first as I want to try and cover every type of filter, not 20 of the same make and model
Due to the high international shipping cost I am currently only taking filters from the UK but I'm hoping that as this series progresses a useful database of knowledge will be built up which will help viewers understand how their filters work, the limitations and the steps you could take to improve filtering capacity and efficiency.
The goal with any filter is to try and achieve FULL CYCLE filtration which is the reduction in ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate - if you look anywhere online you'll see people tell you that the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium ends with the production of nitrate which is removed by regular (often large) water changes.
That is HALF the cycle and is done by AEROBIC bacteria which favors highly oxygenated conditions and is very easy to grow on any surface.
The last part of the cycle (reduction in nitrate) is completed by ANAEROBIC bacteria which favors an environment which is very low or devoid of oxygen. It takes filter media with a very specific internal structure to support both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to allow for full cycle filtration but a suitably sized, well set up filter, will allow the full cycle to complete which results in more stable water conditions and less water changes (typically 10% every 1-2 weeks). Canister filters will generally offer the best provision for filter media but even internals can be significantly improved to boost water quality and fish health.
The following videos will be useful to anyone interested in learning more about filtration, bacteria and making the conditions for your fish as good as possible:

I pimped an AquaBall 60. It's similar to the Biopower, but except the closed baskets with the substrate it has only baskets with foams. I bought 2 additional closed containers and then I had the same setup like you. One basket and two closed containers. I filled the basket with Eheim Mech Pro, the little plastt rings. They work better in this case because they can be squeezed and fill the basket to the top. Doesn't work well with ceramic rings. Then I filled the first closed container with a coarse and a medium foam. In the last container I put Biogravel. Works pretty well, but obviously only for tanks with about 50 liters and it uses the full hight of the aquarium.

As far as internal filters go, I quite like these as they essentially work like a canister filter. I use one in my spare tank with 4 baskets. I leave the coarse foam in the bottom one, add a medium foam and fine pad in the second and fill the top 2 baskets will biohome ultimate.

This Eheim makes about 600 litres per hour with about 6 Watt (Modell 200)! Make a HDF-Corner 12cm-Arms with ppi20 in 3cm and put the BioPower from Eheim behind. Inside the Eheim Biopower put only on top fine clearance , the other 2 o 3 bottles fill up with balls etc.. Let him spray out over the wall with the Power-Diffusor - and - you get happy for month in AQ up to 300 liters. The Pump is great: super low noise working under water, service is easy.

Really nice vid, thanks for the review. Thumbs up 👍. I acquired this pump about 3 months ago and the water got crystal clear. It is very easy to clean the foam as you can remove the lower part separately. It takes me less than 2 minutes to stop the pump, remove the foam part, rinse it, put it back in and start the pump. The 360 degree intake is also a great thing. I got a 100 liters tank since about 25 years and this is easily the best internal pump I ever purchased. Really efficient.

Hi, I have the biopower also, I wanted to ask you if you noticed that the suction power is weak. Because the openings on the bottom are large, there is not enough suction to take in particles swimming by, althought the output flow is strong... So I would say it is great for perhaps smaller fish, and not so much for fish with larger feces (goldfish). What is your opinion on this please?
@bonwrentaylor2743
@bonwrentaylor2743 3 жыл бұрын
@@skliris5 I have the biopower 240 and think I have observed what you're describing. What you're describing is a good feature of the filter I believe. It means any accidental overfeeding, or just food generally, isn't going to get quickly sucked into the filter before the fish have eaten it ...... which would also lead to quicker filter blocking and more maintenance. The fact the filter output is strong means there's plenty of water actually travelling through the filter being filtered. All that water will (should) be having its particulate matter removed. Larger particles, for instance goldfish faeces, should drop to the aquarium gravel/floor where they can be removed during routine tank maintenance using a gravel vac. If they break down into much smaller particles before they're removed, and get stirred up into the water column, then the filter should definitely catch those. My only gripe with the filter is that it requires cleaning every 10-14 days without fail. Its as if the bottom section needed to be made bigger to house a more substantial sponge that doesn't get blocked quite so quickly .....

Awesome filters these are - had a bio power 240 for 5+ yrs in a bedroom tank and still as silent as day 1. Extra basket on that one so coarse pad at the bottom for me, then fine floss, 2 of bio media and then some more fine floss before the head. Works great in a Juwel 180 👍

I have the aqua ball version of this which is similar. Not much room for media as you say, I was disappointed at how little it would hold, and I wouldn't rely on it if that was the only form of filtration either. Nice little filter if it fits in with your particular set-up though. You are spot on with your summing up! Love these videos, really interesting!

I’ve got an Aqua Clear 30 on the 15 column already. But, if the flow is too much for any species I keep, I may switch to this. Just put a dozen Von Rio Tetra in and they seem happy with the flow. So, maybe I’ll go with the Eheim prefilter again. I also have been putting polyfill in prefilters, since they are added filtration. Helps keep the water clear, easy to switch out with water changes and the dirty stuff makes for great filter starting bio. Anyhow, love filtration that can be customized to what your tank needs and ease of use. Thanks again. We have learned so much from your content.

I have this filter and there seems to be a little problem with its conception. More precisely between the bottom compartment and the one just above. The bottom one is supposed to "suck" the water from the outside to the center piece and after that, up into the second compartment above (filled with biomass). The problem is that the water can flow directly from the outside directly up to the second and upper compartment (look at the bottom of the second compartment from the bottom, the grills are not only open in the center). So if your first filter from the bottom doesn't fill the whole bottom compartment up to the top, the water will go directly straight up. Sorry for my bad english, I can do the same in french if necessary !

Anyone tested the noise/vibration level of the Biopower 200 or 160 please? Eheims are historically good in this respect, but because noise level is such a critical factor and these are expensive, I want to be certain before buying. Thanks :)
@Beregar79
@Beregar79 5 жыл бұрын
Hendrik already mentioned the extra baskets you can get but since I use Biopowers a lot in small tanks I'd like to also add that you should absolutely not swap the bottom coarse sponge to anything more fine as it clogs the filter pretty damn fast unless you also create some sort of pre-filter. Also the suction cups are standard crappy eheim quality and turn useless in about two weeks so you might as well forget using the holder. I usually create a sort of base from coarse sponge for it to sit which acts as extra prefilter. You can also jury rig it with Tunze magnet holders if you want but that's gonna cost.

i had those powerbals and sold them after half a year,the reason,they have to manny slids in the compartments,so even the stronger editions they only can suck water throug in the first compartment with sleeves,the main thing about internals is they filter mechanicly,removing dirt and get waterflow in the tank,preferably in an economical way,they suck in litle debris and often the compartments dont click easaly in to each other,so the substrate is spilled in the tank or floor,the attachmentsystem is poor,wat is good,the extra stuf in the package,the ability to adjust the flow direction,in short,the old eheim internals where much better in trapping debris,the bio filtration maybe ads up in smal tanks but in bigger tanks they collect the dirt make current to support the main filter and then they do not impres

Hi Richard Been enjoying this series alot, and also a lot of your other videos. Been using them as reference for years now. But i have a question about a filter i am setting up in my daughter's room now. It's a eheim powerline xl, and it has the baskets. You can add an remove these as you will, and there is slits on the front for intake, and these can be closed. The thing that mens me ponder, is that the basket has a inlet "pipe" in the center of these. So i made that first basket with fine foam round the "pipe", and course foam on the outside of that. The next basket i set up with just biological media, and closed slits. Will this be a correct setup? I am a bit worried that since the water is sucked through the center, there will be too little changing of water around the biological media, since the slits are closed. But i can't have them open either, for then "dirty" water would be sucked in over the biological media. I would also guess it would such most of the water there, since it is closer to the pump and the way with less resistance. The aquarium limits me to use 2 baskets.

It depends on the size of the tank but generally an external or even a decent sized HOB would offer more space for media. However this one is well made and is very good as far as internal filters go which is more than I can say for another Eheim filter I filmed yesterday as that was a massive let down considering it is supposed to be one of their flagship filters - the build quality and design flaws were a pure disgrace on that canister filter and I was raging when I filmed that video.
