Tetra IN1000 Filter (Amazon): geni.us/dXRsvk
Tetra IN1000 Filter (Ebay): ebay.to/2HuNWWg
Taking a look at (and upgrading) the Tetra IN 1000 filter which is for 'Aquariums between 100 litres to 200 litres'.
The amount of media I squeezed in is unlikely to enable full cycle filtration (reduction in nitrate) in a decent sized tank but it should certainly help - With only 2 chambers to go at I was quite limited to what I could do with this filter but it worked out OK.
I only consider true filtration to be a full cycle which is the reduction of ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate hence the low figures - filters will not be nitrate factories when they are properly sized and properly set up.
This series is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:
sales@filterpro.co.uk
07772848730 (Richard)
Anyone who sends a filter will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win.
Please do not send any filters without contacting me first as I want to try and cover every type of filter, not 20 of the same make and model
Due to the high international shipping cost I am currently only taking filters from the UK but I'm hoping that as this series progresses a useful database of knowledge will be built up which will help viewers understand how their filters work, the limitations and the steps you could take to improve filtering capacity and efficiency.
The goal with any filter is to try and achieve FULL CYCLE filtration which is the reduction in ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate - if you look anywhere online you'll see people tell you that the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium ends with the production of nitrate which is removed by regular (often large) water changes.
That is HALF the cycle and is done by AEROBIC bacteria which favors highly oxygenated conditions and is very easy to grow on any surface.
The last part of the cycle (reduction in nitrate) is completed by ANAEROBIC bacteria which favors an environment which is very low or devoid of oxygen. It takes filter media with a very specific internal structure to support both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to allow for full cycle filtration but a suitably sized, well set up filter, will allow the full cycle to complete which results in more stable water conditions and less water changes (typically 10% every 1-2 weeks). Canister filters will generally offer the best provision for filter media but even internals can be significantly improved to boost water quality and fish health.
The following videos will be useful to anyone interested in learning more about filtration, bacteria and making the conditions for your fish as good as possible:

Hi Richard... I have never been a fan of internal filters just because they take up room. Well, of course, I made that assessment before I had one. Once I decided to get one and test it I found I like them very much. Especially little ones for my smaller tanks. This was great info as always!! Hope all is well! 😁🌿🐟💗

Good day Richard, great video, like I said before, I love the series. It gives me great ideas to upgrade my own filtration. I keep larger fish that produce a lot of waste, so filtration both mechanical and biological are important to me. I don't believe in chemical filtration, so my biological media has to be spot on. Thanks for all the great info, you are a blessing to the hobby.

Great video as usual. I wouldn’t mind seeing how you would pimp a normal air driven sponge filter and maybe a good way of blending this filter into the background of a display tank. Many people wouldn’t dream of having a sponge filter in a display tank.

Another great pimped filter. Love these videos. Is the biogravel good for both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria? Also would love to see a pimped out aqua clear hob power filter. Cheers
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
Yes the biogravel is porous just like other types of biohome and as it packs in so tightly it also creates low flow / anaerobic zones in the voids between the tightly packed media too, a bit like an 'anoxic' filter but it does the anaerobic work in such tiny pockets that it is always 100% safe.

This is very similar to a fish murdering aqua one filter I have, I used to use it behind a matten sponge but the sponge slipped out of place and the filter gobbled a ton of small guppies. I am very tempted to try some dremelling to try and tame it and make it usable.
@pondguru

Yes the Aqua one is another one with a very small draw area and over powered pumps which causes huge suction and traps fish. Attack it with a Dremmel! lol

(dirty fish) Hope they give me my money back if I take it back to shop tomorrow (the Range )... then Ill go get another Fluval 4 out pets at home. Its £54 or was something like that when I bought my last one, bit more expensive than the Tetra but I know for sure it does its job properly.

Don't buy this if you have smaller fish in your tank. On the back there's a horizontal slot through which the pump sucks in water (and bypasses the filter media altogether) and it's big enough to draw in small fish. I found a trapped dead neon tetra in there twice. I put some tape over it, solved that problem. But I threw the thing out quickly, filter spunges needed cleaning twice a week, and for that I needed to remove the entire pump every time, didn't want to stick my arm in the water to pry the cartridges off the pump. The aeration works very poorly as well. Bought an Eheim biopower 200 to replace it (for my 110 litre tank) and that's been working great ever since. The two cannot even be compared.

Please forgive my stupidity, but I didn't understand why you added the medium foam on top. Is it the size of the bio media that it will go into the holes and clog up? I'm currently trying to customize my IPF, and I put 1st a course foam, a medium foam, and wool and then the bio media on top. Thank you! Excellent video! please keep them coming!
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
I edited an important part of the video out by mistake - the foam is there to prevent biogravel pouring out of the top of the section housing it as it has two large openings on the back of it. I put the foam there to hold it in so it wouldn't fall out when the sections are taken apart for cleaning - sorry about any confusion there. There is very little scope to set this filter up how I would normally recommend due to the limitations in space and design.

Ive just brought the 600 version of this filter, ive also noticed it doesnt have the carbon layer, I did look at buying the 800 version, but got turned off it as it only has one cylinder instead of the 2 that the 600 and 1000 comes with, my tank is 100litres, and I cant have the 600 on full power, its way too powerful and causes big currents in my tank, is it worth doing these mods to the 600 too ? ive had NO2 and NO3 problems in my tank in the past and dont want those problems again, so would like a biomax section in it.

Great vid and certainly a very informative series.......... out of those you have pimped out ( Oase BioPlus Thermo 200, Super Fish Aqua Flow XL, Eheim 2213 / Classic 250, and the Tetra IN1000 Internal Filter ) which one filters the best (clarity) and which one is the best bang for the buck, for a 75 gal. tank ? Taking into consideration that you could double up on the filters. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work. Would love to see what you could pimp out on this filter...........Magnum® Polishing Internal Canister Filter
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
That would probably be the eheim filter although the lack of tray in it mean it's not one I would normally recommend. For a 75 US? gallon tank it really needs something which holds plenty of media and have numerous filters coming up in future videos that would be worth considering. Depending on the stock you'd be looking for something which could hold between 3kg and 6kg of media for a 75 US gallon tank.

I've been using lava rocks in my filters (aquariums and pond) for years. I just get a couple of rocks. Smash em up if they need to be smaller and thats it. They do house anaerobic bacteria since even in my quarantine tank the nintrates barely ever reach 20ppm and thats one without plants the others barely result in anything readable. 1 flaw is that they do degrade and experience errosion overtime and need to be partially refilled every 2 years or so.

I've been watching many of your video's concerning filters. I'm a little confused now . i was thinking you were going to place that medium blue foam on the bottem of the upper tray and on top of this the little bio balls. this way you have the Coarse/Medium foams back to back. Why in this filter the blue foam on top ? In your other video's you tell us foam above the bio media is a nono. Causing the media to silt up faster.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
This filter had very little scope for anything to be laid out properly and I must have edited out the part where I showed and explained that the blue foam is more to stop the media pouring out of the back of the filter (because of the shape of the section and holes in the top) - sorry about that
