As I suspected, the original issue with this posessed VW was still waiting to strike after repairing the "built-in" problems from Part 1.
Sure enough, as soon as I left the car with the customer, it decided to rear its ugly head.
We're back on at in the next day trying to recreate the customer complaint.
Turns out to be a cool diagnosis, and an even cooler repair!

This hose is important for the mechnical "Fuel regulator"(build in the pump) to work correctly. When pressure in the lines after the pump drops , the regulator "closes" and allows to build more pressure forward of the pump. When pressure builds again and stabilize(forward of the pump) , it bleeds the excess from this hose . PS : The most important thing on GDI engine is engine timing. The high pressure solenoid opening/closing must be done at very precise time when camshaft lobe that drives the High pressure pump starts touching the follower of the HP pump. This allows pressure to build in high pressure fuel rail, or to be bleeded back to the tank. When cam timing is off , the camshaft lobe pushing/releasing action on HP fuel pump follower won't be synchronized with the opening/closing action the High pressure solenoid. Pressure would be out of spec - either too low or in some cases - higher. That's why engine timing is critical for GDI engine to work good.

I owned a Volkswagen Jetta. The engine was anemic and noisy, but reliable. The rest of the automobile was junk. The electrical system was a constant problem. Every window regulator on the car had to be replaced. This included the passenger side rear window that was used probably five times. Window seals started leaking at about 40,000 miles. There were so many other problems, listing them would be a short story. The dealer was a nightmare to work with. Because of the daily aggravation of just owning the vehicle, you couldn't pay me enough money to put up with ANY product associated with VW.

When i get a car like that i charge for the initial diagnosis that was a self induced problem. I would also charge additional time for chasing an intermittent problem. Most customers don't understand why it cost more for intermittent problems. If i spend multiple hours trying duplicate problem i should be paid. I had a car dealer bring a vw van intermittent no start spent my hour on it no problem. Call to get more time and they want me to drive it on my personal time to lunch or whatever. They picked the van up and paid an hour.

Its difficult to sell 100% labor hours on inspections, such as $120/hr vs. $45/hr. Lots of folks think the lighter weight work should be less per hour vs. the same hourly rate that would be charged to do a head gasket job. I tend to agree with the customer however, on the shop side of things, I also see there needs to be revenue generated for the time spent on jobs. That's always been a problem with me too as some things could be performed without a certified master mechanic labor rate due to less involved jobs such as test drives. It is a hard call for both, the customer and the shop...I totally understand

Lol, saw the "through the door jamb" power wire. A friend of mine bought a mustang from someone who did a hack job sub / amp install. All along the right hand side of the car was a perfectly melted cut across the door sill moldings, rear carpet, sunk into the side of the reat seat cushion, and ending in a double C shape in the trunk. The previous owner ran the amp power wire without a fuse and it shorted out and melted the interior up! Including through the door gasket! hahahaha! It was a beautiful car besides that melting, must have smelled like a plastic fire for ever... And was probably so close to catching fire.

If you select D immediately after start, the engine should try to restart if it shuts off unexpectedly. As long as you're in R or D/S it should keep the engine running or try cranking it - at least once.
@V10PDTDI
@V10PDTDI 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan when you want to check any data pids from the diagnostic tool you can cycle the key on off but just before cranking the engine set up the diagnostic tool to what you want to see and then crank the engine the data Will show just don’t cycle the key it won’t work right and the solenoid on the high pressure fuel pump can be actuated with the scan tool. And maybe the reason the ecu didn’t show any low fuel pressure faults is probably that if this engine is tuned then the threshold might be higher than a stock tune . Good job considering the car was almost sabotage beforehand.

Ivan, I had the exact problem on my 2012 ski nautique inboard waterski boat - has a high and low pressure pump located in the engine bay - not in the tank. Problem was intermittent and there were no performance issues at other times. It would always start up when cold no problem. As we skied, then it would randomly act up. I kept thinking that I was getting vapor lock from cheap gas because of air in the fuel rail. After a month of cleaning fuel lines and changing filters I took the leap and concluded that the low pressure pump would spin and prime but at times it could not keep up the demand of the high pressure pump. There were no codes and all live data showed engine was perfect. I put in a new low pressure pump and all is good. Great video!

I came across something like this on a 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee that had been in a fairly significant collision and subsequently, fixed. Not too long after the bodywork was done, the owner noticed issues with power in the mountains, and random loss of power/stalling when the tank got low. The only thing I could figure was the impact was hard enough to break the fuel pump assembly. In my case, the pump assembly couldn't be assembled - I had to replace the entire unit. Problem solved! It worked long enough for the owner to sell the Jeep and buy a brand new replacement. He didn't think it would ever be the same post-collision...and I would have to agree.

Why did that hose come loose? That was the problem? Was it some how locked or tightened in position? What about a TSB regarding that hose? Or upgrade?
@mph5896
@mph5896 3 жыл бұрын
Hose coming loose makes no sense. Problem happens when its hot, then fixes itself once cooled down. Fuel pumps do that. The hose doesn't come undone/reconnect itself only when hot. Enough diagnosis has been done on it it install a new fuel pump assembly and call it a day.

Why did that hose slip out? I think a clip or something is missing from that black tube.

Can you rig a setup at the DLC so when you crank the engine you don't lose power to the scan tool IF that is what is happening? I may have monitored the fuel pump from the beginning as access was there luckily, with either a voltage drop test or an amp clamp on the scope to see what the pump RPMs were (both of these tests) running and priming and not starting, the problem should show up with this information.

So the pump draws more current when there is more head pressure?
@kevin9c1
@kevin9c1 3 жыл бұрын
I thought current would track actual flow. I thought that would be true on a centrifugal pump. Like when you cover the end of a vacuum hose the motor spins much faster and draws less current because it's not doing any work.

For any chance of selling it I'd remove all those body stickers. A simple problem made into a difficult one from someone else messing with it. I'm sure you told the owner if the pump faults again , change it .that why they don't call you out again for the same problem

I assume the guy who unplugged it took the pump out and had no more clue on reassembling the pump than I would have. The pump looks, cheap, complex, with planned obsolescence plumbing, what's wrong with a plastic box that pumps fuel.

I had the same frustrating issue with a petrol Citroen years ago. That was less than a year old. Dealer gave up after putting the parts cannon into overdrive. The low pressure fuel pump just died when it got warm, usually after around 30 mins. European strikes again 😁 Nice work on persisting with this, was that a Rav 4 you turned up in 👍🏻
