"All of those sounds" come courtesy of genius DSOTM Sound Engineer and legendary recording artist Alan Parsons. You've reacted to "Eye in the Sky" by his group, "The Alan Parsons Project". One of their songs that is reminiscent of the grittiness of Pink Floyd's "Money" is "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You". Also check out The Alan Parsons Project songs "Time", "Games People Play", "Breakdown", and "Old and Wise".

I only heard "Money" many years after listening to the entire Alan Parsons Project back catalogue many, many times over and I almost thought it was an APP track! Some research came up with the Alan Parsons connection of course and it then made sense. Never been a Pink Floyd fan though - APP were better IMHO :-)

This is the song that turned me on to hi fidelity. I grew up poor and while I absolutely loved music, I had never heard a good stereo. Then I needed a ride home from work one day (back in 1978) and my buddy offered to help me out. I sat in the passenger seat of his 1969 Camaro SS and as we pulled out of the parking lot, he played this through his after market Alpine deck at very high volume. I had never heard music the way it was supposed to be heard before and this masterpiece instantly put me on a mission to get a good stereo.

Most likely that "sound" is Gilmore's guitar run through an old reverb amp. Back in the day, reverb effects like that were made by running the sound through a metal box with two long springs strung across it. That's the springy sound you hear. The reverb box usually sat in the bottom of the amplifier just below the speaker. So if you happened to bump it, it would sound like lightning. It's old technology from the vacuum tube era. But, delivers a sound hard to reproduce digitally. CCR used it a lot too.

Jay, "that sound" is a Guitar with a Tremolo effect on it. That's not the Tremolo (Whammy Bar), but an effect that makes the Guitar signal intermittent. It's on studio equipment or some amps or through a Pedal.

Hey Jay, that noise you were asking about was done by a wah wah pedal (I think). The noises at the beginning were from a cash register tape loop, the sounds of tearing paper and bags of coins being thrown into an industrial food-mixing bowl. This album stayed on the Billboard Top 100 for 778 weeks. That's 14 years! The people you can hear talking at the end came from interviews they did with random people, their road manager and Paul & Linda McCartney. Amazing stuff! ✌🇦🇺🙃
@peterwalsh2470
@peterwalsh2470 2 жыл бұрын
not exactly a wah, closer to a vibrato effect, an effect built-in to some older amplifiers, but it cuts the volume out in quick repetition, the frequency that it cuts out can be adjusted for different effects, more commonly used in older guitar sounds from the 60s. was also used on the vocals in "crimson and clover" by the shondells.

Lyrics: "Money" Money, get away Get a good job with more pay and you're O.K. Money, it's a gas Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash New car, caviar, four star daydream, Think I'll buy me a football team Money, get back I'm all right, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack. Money, it's a hit Don't give me that do goody good bullshit I'm in the high-fidelity first-class traveling set And I think I need a Learjet Money, it's a crime Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie Money, so they say Is the root of all evil today But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're giving none away "Ha-ha! I was in the right!" "Yes, absolutely in the right!" "I certainly was in the right!" "Yeah, I was definitely in the right. That geezer was cruising for a bruising!" "Why does anyone do anything?" "Yeah!" "Why does anyone do anything?" "I don't know, I was really drunk at the time!" "I was just telling him it was in, he could get it in Number Two. He was asking why it wasn't coming up on freight eleven. After, I was yelling and screaming and telling him why it wasn't coming up on freight eleven. It came to a heavy blow, which sorted the matter out."

The main theme of the Dark Side of the Moon album is “what drives people crazy”. If work can drive people crazy; (Breathe). If the frantic rush of life can drive people crazy; (On The Run). If the time that passes too quickly can drive people crazy; (Time). If the inevitable end, death can drive people crazy; (The Great Gig In The Sky). If money can drive people crazy; (Money). If the illusion of being able to choose can drive people crazy; (Any Color You Like). If what a soldier endure on a battlefield can drive people crazy; (Us And Them). All of this can certainly result in; (Brain Damage). Even though the bright side of the moon may be eclipsed; (Eclipse). But anyway, (I'll see you on the dark side of the moon).

There is never been another band like Pink Floyd. I think they started around 1970 and just finally broke up and retired not long ago. David gilmour on the guitar and lead vocals is another one of the greatest guitarists there has ever been. When you watch him play on my video it's like he's barely doing anything and all that magic just blows out. Then he sings while playing, the man is incredible and probably pushing 70 years old.

The soud you wanted to know about is just a guitar with an effects pedal. I think it's the "wah-wah" pedal. If you ever get a chance, you need to see a Pink Floyd show at a Planetarium. The one we had in Vancouver showed Pink Floyd every weekend for something like 30 years straight. It's a laser show projected on the ceiling and you lie on the floor in complete blackness and the album is blasted from end to end, Dark Side or the Wall, start to finish. We used to get high on pot and go and it was just the most amazing music-listening experience in the world. So, just do some searching for "pink floyd laser show" and planetariums in your part of the world and maybe one day you'll get lucky. :)

I saw the tribute band Brit Floyd 2 years ago. They do a great light laser show. They are the closest thing you'll get to Pink Floyd. They have Roger Waters blessing. They don't disappoint. I was very nicely surprised. I'd definitely go see them again. I've seen them on TV. Their on KZfaq. Check them out. Just thought I'd give you a heads up if you're interested.

This album sold gazillions of copies..I wonder how many people noticed the prism is only split into 6 colours and not 7 ! (for many years,the prism had only 6 colours evident as the indigo/violet elements were hard to differentiate in the printing process..this was amended years later when the printing process was different to what was used before)

The UK might be very small but it's HUGE in music...Pink Floyd, Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, E.L.O., UB40, The Police, The Kinks, Slade, Queen, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Moody Blues, The Pet Shop Boys, Simply Red, The Who, Bad Company, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, etc, etc, and I'm only including some bands that came to my mind here.

Saw an interview with Roger Waters where he explained the sound of coins was recorded by simply dropping them into a metal bowl. Other sounds include paper ripping off an adding machine (the old name for a calculator) and an old-fashioned mechanical cash register.

Yep. The bowl was something his wife at the time used when she made pottery. All the recorded sounds were put together on a long tape loop.

I think the "he was cruising for a bruising" at the end was said by Linda McCartney by the way, it was in response to some questions Floyd asked people who were around "When was the last time you were violent" and then "Did they deserve it"

the money effects in the beginning were from a BBC sound library, and because samplers had not yet been invented, that part was made by making a ton of copies of the tape and then by hand, cutting and gluing pieces of audio tape together in the studio.

Lotsa good sounds in that song: an electric guitar with a delay repeat, an electric piano with a wah-wah pedal, saxophone, drums, guitar, bass, vocals, cash register, and the beat is 7/4! counts right out with the bass figure. "Sheep" would be another absolute banger, from PF's Animals album, that you could react to. Great reaction!
