This is exactly what I think. Imo the only reason that the gem cycled between its previous forms its because thats what gems have to do. If it were the case that the gem had reformed looking like either Rose or Pink, it would have acted the same way as Pink Steven did. It just wasnt gonna reform as an actual sentient gem because it is totally connected to its organic body

That's what I thought at first, since when it showed the silouette of Steven; the gem was gone, unlike in Pink and Rose, where it was visible. So I though that this was the actual gem alone.

I know I'm 2 years late, plus I haven't watched the Steven Universe Future show yet, but what I like to believe is that while he is a part human, he is also part gem, meaning he will possibly gain immortality and stop growing at one point? There's obviously a lot of flaws to that thought, since his human part of him wouldn't be scientifically able to just stop growing and aging but, well, you know, magic. But since he is able to stretch parts of his body or even fuse, I think that stopping his growth wouldn't be that much of a stretch. As for a death of other kind that old age, I'm actually not sure about that. There is only so much he can heal in time with his powers to prevent his death, obviously, so there is a chance he might die. But I am not sure what would happen then; there are many theories about it tho.

A LOT of people keep misreading the scene where Rose says "Every time you love yourself that is me loving you". Her saying that is somewhat metaphoric, given that before she said this she says "we cannot both exist at the same time" (which was a very literal statement). The gem from Steven is his gem side, a being that has his powers and of course, the memories attached to the gem, but without the emotion and "heart" that his organic side has (which is precisely why it was only driven with a single purpose, to remerge with it's other half, Steven). The gem has some of rose's memories and hard light forms, obviously because it USED to be rose's gem, but once she gave up her existence, all remnants of her are just that, leftover remnants. IF the gem was actually rose quartz or Pink diamond, it would have had her emotions or movements, and it would've been more careful in using it's power so as to not cause harm (as remember, organic Steven had to tell his other side "stop, you're hurting them". if it was Rose, all of that would've already been understood by the gem). The fact that the pink Steven was driven to remerge with Steven without any regard or moral inclinations from how it was acting or what it was doing, acting emotionless in the process, heavily implies it's simply a raw gem version of steven stripped with the positives that comes from his human side, instead of being a "being" like Rose or Pink. Thematically this fits even more. throughout the entire season Steven has been hit with an identity crises in regards to him being either his mom, or himself. The fact the episode starts with a split view to show the perspective of BOTH Stevens, is a narrative trick showing that they are two halfs of the same whole, both JUST being Steven. The inclination of the gem side of Steven not being pink or rose, but just a stripped version of Steven also fits along that point, especially given the conflict Steven's been having throughout the season. For all intents and purposes, PD/Rose is half of Steven in the same way that any parent is half of their child, but that doesn't mean that Steven is "Rose Reincarnated" (as that thought completely negates and conflicts with the very clear theme and issue the show directly addresses). A child isn't their parent reincarnated, a child is it's own being, and so is Steven. both the Gem Steven and the Organic Steven act in ways Rose/PD wouldn't act, and that alone shows that Steven is his own person, even when stripped to his basic components. Personally, I think Pink's consciousness was in Pink Steven to a degree. Pink Steven's reacting once seeing Steven, the vibe of pure will to reach Steven, to save her son, Pink's laugh being in there when they reunite. I don't think that "she's gone" means there's nothing left of rose, I think "she's gone" means that even though she is in there, she is not coming back, she is going to let her son exist. I believe that every action of Pink Steven was pure mother's love.

I think it'd be POSSIBLE, with her memories and feelings still being obviously buried in there, but I think "she's gone" is less of a statement that she is erased, and more of a statement that she WON'T come back because she loves Steven, being Steven, and would never take that away from Steven. Pink's laugh is there when they reunite, Pink Steven gives me a vibe of pure mother's love.

The main point of this scene is that the reason it didnt turn into either pink or rose is because that it is debunking white's theory of pink just running from her responsibilities by turning into a child. Thats why Pink steven is there, its saying that Steven is Steven. Not rose nor Pink.
