If you took a look at the lift line in the Whistler Bike Park, you'd notice the majority of bikes being high-end, carbon, and multiple thousands of dollars. However, there are still a few classic bikes that have stood the test of time and are still shredding the bike park trails.

This is great - I think it's important to show everyone that riding a bike isn't about what you ride. It's about getting out there and riding and having fun. They're great conversation starters too. They also ride differently - so the new kids on all their flash bikes don't actually know how to ride an older bike. Personally I love them and it's great to see they're still kicking around and getting life - not sitting in a shed for decades!

I love this. There is nothing that will force you to be as good with your technique as possible than riding an old bike. Compared to modern bikes, they demand a lot more skill to go the same speed, but if you have the goods, you can still be one of the fastest ones out there on old tech. Ask me (and my 2010 Giant Reign) how I know!

I ride a 2005 Giant Reign 2. This bike is like a time capsule. I bought the frame new in 2005, had it built and only rode it for about a year. I then got into motocross and went full in and the Giant sat in the garage. Gave up MX a couple years ago and got back into mountain biking. Changed the tires and tubes, serviced the fork (Rock Shox Pike 426 coil), changed out the brakes, changed bars and stem to wider modern bars and new seat. Loving this bike all over again! I was really thinking of getting a new bike, but this old Giant is just a joy to ride. I am thinking I need a dropper seat post.

The "new standards" only change for the sake of sales, and though the handling has changed to make things easier for someone to ride overall, these "classics" are all very capable beasts no matter the age.
@ViperSRTnACR

Yes and no. I've been in the industry off and on for close to 21 years now. Compared to early/mid 2000's bikes, a modern 150mm trail bike will allow the average rider to conquer more terrain than they previously could. For example rather than a Large frame being much taller than a small but almost the same length on older bikes, Larges on newer bikes are rather longer or slacker while only being slightly taller. That and much better frame geometry, gone are the days of 71 degree head angles and short top tubes with long stems to compensate.
@bananasstuff3344
@bananasstuff3344 4 жыл бұрын
a new bike is always going to be more capable with the same rider on the same terrain, but for really twisty stuff that's not too steep the old school can be the way to go!

And you know they could shred too ... Appreciate people who don't care about anything but the riding ... I'm not one of those people though, the tech is a fun part of the hobby for me, keeps me occupied during the winter when the parks are closed and I'm not riding as often.

Sweet bikes! =) I still got my Gary Fisher CR-7, from 1990. Not seen much action the last 10 years. Before that it was a daily driver. Fully classic XT kitted. Also got a Crescent iLions trials bike. It's a 2nd gen with circular tube frame. I cracked both the frame and fork of the 1st gen square tubed frame, manufacturer swapped both to 2nd gen, no questions asked since it's a team bike. I bought the frame and fork through the bike shop I worked at. Ride on out there! =)

"you don't need a new bike each year" best quote of the video. I personally don't ride my bikes until they fall apart, i am right now on my second full sus bike which i bought at the end or 2019, being a 19 model year and new bikes were coming in meant that i got a really good price on it (trek remedy 7). before that did i buy a 2010 specialized stumpjumper fsr comp at the end of 2010 which meant that i got a good price for that bike too and i ran that bike until i bought my trek and i will probably be on this trek for another 7+ years before i feel the desire to swap it for something new.

I had a Scott Gambler 2012 WC. I loved the older frame design, it was beefy and basically indestructible. At 22kg it wasn't light but for going downhill it was amazing, it was bright blue with yellow wheels, red chain ring and pedels. Loudest bike at the bike park for sure. Then 1 year ago it was stolen from me, that's life I guess. 5:27. There we go knew I would see one!

All these old bikes make me wish I hadn't sold my 2003 Iron Horse SGS with its Marzocchi Bomber Super T Pro fork. It could send staircases and loading docks all day and was practically indestructible, but my local XC-oriented trails couldn't justify keeping the super plush 45 lbs machine.

5:55 I got the same dhx5 shock, air version, from 2007 or so... bought it used and serviced it for about 250 dollars, preforms really well, I can even compare it to something like a new topaz 3 from DVO which costs twice as much and has less customization.

Love that all those bikes where classics and I'm out here riding a Cannondale Jekyll from 2001 where the bike is actually older than me

I'm still riding a '95 Schwinn S95.3, with an original Rockshox Judy SL. The trails in my area haven't gotten significantly more difficult over the years, no need to upgrade.
