"why am i teaching you a hack but not the exact right form for a powerstop?" Probably cause it's a damn good way to learn! I progressed to the powerstop along this exact path, having been inspired by your videos to work on it, and i've been skating 20 years! :P 4:16 ooh good doggie :D

Solid advice! Us usual😉. Your powerstops have evolved more towards parallel slides as logical result of your concistency. My personal tip is always start with pressure on the outside skate for the first 'milliseconds' of the slide. I mix my inside skate in after I'm sure my outside one is sliding.This ensures you never get catapulted over your outside skate, which sucks bigtime😆
@joshcarter-com
@joshcarter-com Ай бұрын
Sliding the outside skate is exactly the problem I’m having at the moment. Getting it to slide but not stick is tricky-which is what Bill is addressing in this vid. (I think. I need to revisit it with my skates on.)

Thanks! But… I’ve worked very hard for my power stop not to resemble a parallel slide. Perhaps the definition is confusing for us all.

@@BillStoppardDon't worry it looks different... Can't help that it resembles a parallel as it slides on both skates with corresponding edges... The rest of your body does anything but parallel slide 🤓

You will get it soon... Then keep practicing at medium speed, it stays scary at high speeds but eventually you gotta dare to... You can wear all protection to make it less scary and sliding out isn't a bad way to fall, mostly it hurts only the first time showering 😂

This is probably one of the best videos, if not the best, for beginners about how to learn the powerstop. The only thing that confused me a bit is how in the beginning it's about practicing turn (and there are lots of ways to turn, not only the one described there), and later when it's about practising the stop itself, which requires a very different posture. After watching the video a few times I understand the differences now, however. The thing I find most challenging while learning the powerstop is to keep my weight on the inner skate. When doing a turn the weight naturally shifts to the outer skate and I couldn't find a way how to change that yet. Maybe you could focus on that aspect a bit more in one of your next videos?

I would say, if starting to engage a slide on a curve at speed feels daunting, i'd say practice slower, but tighter turns, even just within one sq. metre - just so you start to get a feel for your wheels slipping and gripping up, and progress to bigger curves from there. I'd say the formula is a mix of entry speed, curve tightness and boot angle, so if you lower your speed, you can tighten up the curve to start to force the wheels out. squatting lower than usual is of course good for when you fall on your ass, but it also helps you figure out the right boot angle for you. wear gloves for this one, kids! Also you can get your head muddled thinking about every bit of advice, so just get out there and get your reps in! Don't think - feel! One other thing i've found that i should probably work on, is that my right leg is stronger than my left, so if i turn right, i can get a nice tight powerstop, but if i turn left, i go into more of a slide. That inside foot sure does do a lot of work!
@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard Ай бұрын
Totally agree the position can be practiced at slow speed! And yes, reps are everything!!!

Does look like a less intimidating entry point. My inline hockey stop has improved since I started ice skating a few months ago. The mechanic that gives a really hard turn on ice gives you a sliding stop on inlines, even with the softish wheels I use.
@ericbernardi8116
@ericbernardi8116 Ай бұрын
But edging and weight transfer is quite the opposite for ice vs inline hockey-stop 😅 if you try ice hockey stop at speed on inline you sure gonna kiss the asphalt 🙈

Do you need some special wheel material or type of wheel to make your skates slide on any surface or is it purely a technique?
@happylifexxxx

Its technique. your wheels need to be a bit worn down, but then they're good to go. watch all the youtube footage about the powerstop and film yourself. it takes some time but you will get there

Does the durometer of the wheels matter a great deal? Too soft a wheel and I imagine your going to get launched. What would be ideal?

Its the opposite, i use soft wheels about 80a, they feel super great for power stops cuz for me it stops me even more instantly

The harder the wheel the less girppy it gets, maybe with 90a durometer youre gonna slide longer but not that satisfaction of instant stopping

Would you consider showing the "wrong way" or common mistakes on your teaching videos? Showing what can impede success (how not to) can be just as effective as showing how to do it. That information can at least more readily pinpoint the correct form by eliminating some variables. I appreciate any consideration you can give to this idea, and hope I'm not overstepping my bounds as a viewer. Keep rocking, Bill!
