Curious about the new Rollerblade Twister XT? This video is the first in the series that I’ll be making to examine the new boot and liner in ultra nerdy detail. In this first part I compare the Twister XT shell to that of the older Twister Edge and discuss design changes that affect performance and the overall skating experience.

Hi, I have an old model of Rollerblade Twister 80 2015 with many holes around the shell. Overall, I am fully satisfied with them, but I want an upgrade... First of all, because my original liners are fully worn out and very smelly))) Second, I'm a little bit afraid that this shell can crack, and I won't be able to skate for a while until I get a new pair of skates. Third, I have an illusion that it's possible to make my skating experience better ))) The goal is to get a performance setup with a very snug fit, even if it's needed to be gained through pain))) A budget is not a problem. My variables and experience I have very narrow feet. Widht is approximately 96mm without socks with narrow ankles and narrow heels. Length 287-288mm(without socks). My current Rollerblade Twister 2015 is size 44 with a max length of 285mm. It took a while to wear out the liner and don't have pain after skating. I've already tried a few skates: Powerslide Next Core 80. In my opinion, every skate that has a very thick liner is not about performance feet. Also, the toe box was too wide for me, I could shake my feet up and down. FR SL carbon. Too wide and bulky. I could shake my toes up and down in a toe box and also, I had heel lifting because of my narrow heels. One of my ideas is even if you have a perfect length in skates, but you have some wiggle room in a toe box to shake your toes up and down, when you lean forward with all your weight, your heels will come out from heel cups because your toes find some extra space in skates. What you can recommend to me for my goal? 1. I thought that a Rollerblade Crossfire could be good, but based on what I read from other skaters and from you that this model has heel lifting problems, and it is more suitable for people with wide feet. Is it so? 2. Another option is to buy a Rollerblade Twister XT size 43-44(280-285), but I heard that it is wider than old Twister models, especially my Twisters 2015. 3. Upgrade my current twisters with Intuition premium liner. Is it a good idea in my case considering that I have pretty narrow feet? What this liner can give me? I've heard that all these Intuition liners are more about downsizing your current skate size... Am I wrong? What else Intuition can give me from your perspective? 4. Maybe you can recommend some other skate options. As I wrote above, budget is not a problem. I will appreciate your answer.

Thanks Thomas. What did you not like about the FR1 Deluxe Intuition? I personally find that an Intuition liner in any boot makes my boot fit and perform better, especially when I’m skating for any extended length of time. The thing about Intuitions is that you need to size them properly (for a tight fit), and then suffer through the break-in process which can take about 50 miles of skating. They generally do not feel good the first time you skate them, especially if you’ve selected the size for performance fit. But a month later they typically feel amazing.

@@Tommyweston Hi Thomas, I think the FR1 and Twister Edge both have good build quality on the plastic molded parts. However, I think I would give the edge to the Twister for construction quality due to the slightly better quality straps. I’ve been skating the FR1 for about 4 years and it’s a very robust boot that takes a beating. I’ve had no issues or failures. Parts are readily available for both boots.

Nice demonstration of the Twister shell. Note, that my Twister Edge X (2021 model) already had the same cuff features, so those are not specifically new to the XT I guess. And I have some doubts that RB made any change to the shell itself. I think the shell has a nice anatomical shape and the breaks are a bit closer to each other than usual, so one has higher chances to find a good fit. I see that RB suggests now a size smaller for me with the XT, but my Edge X was just 2 sizes down from the suggested size with the Intuition liner which is a bit strange as that liner wasn't that thick. What annoyed me the most about this shell is the significant forward bias of the mounting holes. It is about 7-8mm shifted, which is big enough to look awful and also feels bad. And it is also not centered like the adapt spec, so you actually have to be quite lucky to find a frame which mounts balanced. I believe this is somehow affecting the bigger sizes more (I wear EU45) as according to my "research" those looked with the 3WD frame especially stupid. If it was the only good shell I had I would have already modified the mounting to sg like a PS Imperial adjustable mount. So far I have been using the most forward holes if necessary with a screw and a nut from the side of the frame.
@endlessblading
@endlessblading Жыл бұрын
Thanks for you comment. That’s good to know about the later Twister Edges already having an updated cuff. For sizing my Twister Edge I bought the same size as my mondopoint measurement which was one sizer lower than a lot of shops recommended at the time. For the Twister XT I am a size smaller than that. So the new boot/liner do fit differently. My next video about the liner discusses this a bit. You are correct about the frame alignment. It does have a 7-8 mm forward bias. Rollerblade has historically designed their skates to bias their frames like this. My first Lightning TRS skates were like this and every skate since. Adapt symmetrically centers their 165 frames which causes it to be rear biased on all other skates. I believe this is incorrect. The 165 mount is not a symmetric mounting system like UFS. Our Endless 100 RB frame has longitudinal mounting slots which allows centered mounting on both Rollerblade and Adapt skates. If you mount any other Endless frame on the RB boots like the RB80 or Twister you likely will find that it has an acceptable amount of forward bias. I have found that I’m not bothered by the alignment and that it ends up being more centered than a stock Rollerblade frame.
@balazstudos3858
@balazstudos3858 Жыл бұрын
@@endlessblading Yes, same here, if I look at the Edge X size chart I am two sizes down and I am down one for the XT chart compared to recommend size. I wouldn't be against symmetrical or intentionally shifted 165 frames if the boots provided longitudinal adjustment. This would offer a bit lower ride height for large 4x setups. Actually Seba/Fr did something similar shifting the mounting hole(s) by 15mm to the back on their downhill frames as their 7 mount system easily allows that. I am the one who thinks lateral adjustment is quite important. I used my Twister with that 5x84 frame the longest, which allowed a quite low center of gravity, but as far as I remember I had to adjust the frame significantly away from the center. So I doubt I would easily accept longnitudal holes. But I know I am probably way too picky and oversensitive when it comes to skating gear. I like your trinity 4x100 and my girlfriend the 165 4x90 frame a lot.

Huh? If you go size 11+ you get 255mm frames.. Anything smaller you get 243mm. Looks perfectly balanced to me. I'm so confused. You mentioned the shell has a forward bias and endless said the frame has a forward bias 🤔 Yes they updated the cuff last year No they did not make any changes to the mold whatsoever, only the liner.
@endlessblading
@endlessblading Жыл бұрын
@@kenmastersmaster Good to know about what’s included with size 11+. I personally feel 255 mm is too short for size 11+, but others may have a have a different opinion, and that’s okay. We created the Endless 90 ES (291 mm) specifically for sizes 45 and up. Granted our frames have a slight rocker and the RB frames do not, but with use all flat frames develop a slight rocker, which will reduce front-back stability. Regarding forward bias of frames on Rollerblade boots…. RB has historically chosen to locate its mounting features such that the frame sits slightly shifted towards the front of the boot. I find that to generally be the case with both Twister boots I have, regardless what frame I use. It’s neither good or bad, but does affect my perception of stability and maneuverability. I’ve noticed the amount of bias can change as a function of boot size. The Endless frames seem to center better for me on my size 26.0/26.5 than the stock RB frame, FWIW. Yeah I heard that from someone else that the shell got updated the previous year. My Twister Edge was from the year before that change evidently.

About skates being light. I think is actually good when they're a bit heavy so they help adding momentum when you throw your skate forward on each stride.
@endlessblading
@endlessblading Жыл бұрын
Let’s think about this. Momentum comes from from mass at the end of your leg (moment arm) having linear and angular velocity. However, to complete the second half of each stride you need to decelerate your foot, and then accelerate it in the opposite direction. Excess mass is working against you at that point and putting more strain on your joints and muscles. Momentum of your skate feels good for ride comfort rolling over rough surfaces, but works against your body’s ability to skate at high speed for any length of time. Hence why speed skaters aren’t using heavy frames.
@SaccoBelmonte
@SaccoBelmonte Жыл бұрын
@@endlessblading I understand what you say but something in my striding really helps me, which involves throwing my trailing foot forward on each stride, and the other one going to the side ends folded back (ends on the other side of my body) behind me, ready to throw it for the next stride. I feel like: 1) Bringing the trailing skate behind close to me after the initial stride adds extra momentum as I bring the mass of the trailing skate forward closer to my body. The skate ends behind me and my leg is resting storing power (Like a Mantis Shrimp's Club) 2) Throwing that folded skate forward while leaning down on the stride clearly gives me a lot of momentum. 3) Finally, the arms. Swinging them on each stride also results in extra momentum. If I didn't do any of these my speed wouldn't be as optimal.
@endlessblading
@endlessblading Жыл бұрын
@@SaccoBelmonte That’s awesome that you have that level of awareness of your body mechanics through each stride. Sounds like you might enjoy skating an Endless frame (if you don’t already) since it’s what I would classify as a medium-weight frame. In my opinion it hits that sweet spot of not too heavy, but smooth rolling due to the momentum. There is a point at which a skate does feel too heavy though and makes your stride sluggish. A simple test would be to add some 0.5 kg ankle weights and let us know if you skate faster or slower.
@SaccoBelmonte
@SaccoBelmonte Жыл бұрын
@@endlessblading Believe me I thought about adding weights either in my legs or hands and see. :) About the Endless, sure I would but I have some Flying Eagle Rockerable frames and some RB rockered frames. I really love them and I don't find myself needing more support, I love how super nimble they're and I learned how to avoid the wobble. In fact I also let my 3WD with short FR frames to develop a rocker which is waaaay better than flat.
@kenmastersmaster
@kenmastersmaster Жыл бұрын
I agree with this. I've noticed when I size up the added weight helps me roll over twigs, cracks and pebbles where a smaller lighter boot will catch and I'll fall forward. It's like the added heft adds to stability vs maneuverability As for putting more stain on joints and muscles that's a bunch of bro science. Hi Kokaina, my apologies for the slow reply. When sizing your liner and boot it really comes down to your measured foot length. What is the measurement of your foot? If you are still getting roominess in a size 41-42 FR1 with Intution then then that tells me your Intuition is too big, your FR shell is too big, or both. Let me know your foot size in mm (and whether it’s wide, average or narrow width) and I can give you an accurate recommendation for sizing in either the FR1 or the Twister XT. I haven’t tried my v2 in the XT yet, but I can tell you that it has slightly thicker foam in the toe box than the FR Intuition liner that I’m currently using in the XT. I just got the new Intuition Premium so I’m planning to test all the options.

Hi Greg. I think you can fit in the size 27.0-27.5. Your bigger foot is in the size range. Here’s the thing I find most people have trouble with regarding skate sizing: they don’t allow the liner to break in and stretch and mold to their foot. This can be a little painful initially, but after a handful of skate sessions usually works out. If the skate feels comfy / roomy when you first put it on then it likely will be a sloppy fit a month or two later that will cause blisters and degrade overall performance. All my best fitting skates felt uncomfortable and/or painful the very couple skates (like “oh hell no my foot isn’t going in there”). The only exception to all this is width fit issues. If you have wide feel then fitting in a narrow shell will be a problem unless you get a low volume liner to create more space on the sides. Good luck!

Hi, unfortunately I’m not sure how to do that accurately. Any advice? Based on my own experience with these boots, my advice would be to not let your measured foot size be greater than 3-4 mm more than the upper range of the CM size of the boot. For instance, my foot measures 27.0 cm (270 mm). I have the size 26.0-26.5 boot. My foot is 5 mm larger than the 26.5 cm boot. I’m finding this to be an extremely tight fit that is bruising my toenails on long skates. If my foot was 1-2 mm shorter it would feel a bit better, but still really tight. Another example: Your foot measures 257 mm. I think you could fit into into the 25.0-25.5 boot. Again this would be a very snug fit. If your foot measured 252 mm I would recommend the same 25.0-25.5 boot. Because the next size down would be too small. I hope that helps.

The new Twister XT W does look really good. If you have an FR1 Deluxe Intuition then I would keep it. The Intuition liner is superior to the stock Rollerblade liner and much lighter. The FR1 shell is lighter than the Twister XT as well. There are some important features the FR1 has that the Twister does not: 7-hole mounting, and adjustable cuffs. This gives you a lot of versatility for mounting different frames and getting a customized amount of ankle support. The thing the Twister excels at is offering a very rigid boot that resists torsion. However if you are a lighter/smaller skater you will feel that much less. If you have a stock FR1 then the one potential benefit you might experience with the Twister XT is that you might fit into a smaller size which will give you lower weight and more precision. The Twister liner is better than the stock FR liner. If you are in the FR1 Deluxe Intuition then you are likely already downsized. @@endlessblading So basically FR 1 intuition > Twister XT = FR1? If i have money for Twister it would be better to go for FR1 deluxe intuition, since price is the same.

@@leyitah2 I'm not sure I'd make an absolute statement like that. Getting an Intuition liner with your skate is a nice feature for sure. But right now I'm currently skating Intuition in my Twister XT and absolutely loving it. But if you are budget constrained, and serious about the performance of your skate then the FR1 Deluxe Intuition is an excellent skate that is very versatile.

Where do you buy the Twister XT? You can buy it from any Rollerblade brand dealer. If you are in the U.S. Inline Warehouse carries Rollerblade.

@@endlessblading Thanks! I'm new to the scene. So new I don't know what the hell to buy lol. So I was looking at endless UFS frames and now I'm here. What boot would you suggest to get with the frames?

@@Nootlest If you are looking for a versatile and affordable UFS boot I would look at the FR Skates UFR. If you can afford it, get the version with the Intuition liner. The UFR is available boot only. If you are looking for a 165 boot then I'd recommend the Rollerblade Twister XT and FR Skates FR1. FR1 has an Intuition version as well. Feel free to reach out via email if you need more specific help. We are happy to assist.

You need to plastidip those cuffs and not spray paint them If you did plastidip then you need 3 or 4 more coats and it will not flake off like that
