Peter sets off to Gloucestershire, where the newly restored Merlin is about to be put through its paces.. but will it be up to Peter's perfectionist standards? We also learn about a truly remarkable woman who saved the Spitfire from having engine problems during the war by inventing a solution the size of a thumb nail!
Hidden away in a little-known workshop at one of Britain's most important wartime airbases, a team of dedicated engineers and enthusiasts are working round the clock to bring a national icon back to life. Over the course of a year and £2 million at stake, there's no room for error as Peter Monk and his engineers try to turn a 1943 Mark IX Spitfire from rusty remains into the flying legend. Is there a link or some info as to the history of the Greek Spitfire - I assume it saw service in the RAF during the war?

While a great plane the Spitfire was the glamour boy of the Battle of Britian... The (Superb and top three of my favorite WWII planes) often-ignored Hawker Hurricane~ The Hurricane ~ rugged ~ I think in fact the Hurricane made more kills than the Spitfire in the Battle of Britain ~ Used as a Tank buster in North Africa! All round humble Donkey ~~ work horse!

No, it had nothing to do with glamour. The Spitfire was simply a more manouverable, faster killing machine.

When my history books are correct Britain didn’t win anything and would have been done without the US entering the war, not mentioning the far superior Bf 109 which the spitfire couldn’t hold a candle to…

The Spitfire was normally ahead of the 109 in performance. The 109F perhaps had an edge over the initial Spit V tropical, depending on the pilot. Once the mk.IX and XIV arrived, the old 109 was second fiddle.

@@bobsakamanos4469 well, what I’m reading herr is that the bf 109 was the better plane from the getgo. I’m sure later in war newer generations caught up, but then the Germans already developed the Me 262. which isn’t even comparable. Thank god the resource weren’t there to get these to significant numbers. I hope we’ll never see any airfights in Europe, two in the last century were enough…

@@erebostd if we stick with the original assertion about the 109, then the Me262 is a different argument and the 109 performance was overtaken by Spitfires and other fighters. Yes, of course the germans were lightyears ahead in jet technology, but just didn't have the resources. The US grabbed their transonic windtunnel equipment and rebuilt it in Langley (?), using it until the 1970s.

Don’t we have better technology now isn’t everything supposed to be so much faster but if you have a plastic card in your pocket and you go to a gas station and go to pay for your stuff and there’s another person right next to you with cash who walks out first I mean for real who walks out first the guy with that card was supposed to, but you’re already in your car leaving because you used cash cash is king man
