Dunhill "Standard Mixture," blended by the Scandinavian Tobacco Group, is a traditional English mixture containing Cyprian Latakia, Turkish Orientals, and Virginias - all lightly toasted. Billed as the "Standard" English blend, does it live up to the designation?
From the tin: "A balanced blend of Virginia and Turkish* tobaccos. Fine rich flavor."
*The blend also contains Latakia.

I love this blend. My first bowl tasted like pepper and leather and then it sweetened throughout the smoke. So good.

Good review. I ordered a few tins of this mixture and have smoked it a few times now. The more I keep smoking it the more I like it- it might even be my favorite of the Dunhill's, or at least the ones I have tried. It stays well lit and is consistent throughout the entire bowl. As you say in the review the blend has "balance" and I think that's something pipe smokers don't give enough credit. It makes the grade and is now part of my rotation. Thanks again for your thoughtful review.

Another great review man. this is one blend that is on my next order list. I have to say that your reviews make me feel like a bit of a simpleton when it comes to describing the flavors of a blend. When I am sitting down smoking and trying to come up with a good description of a tobacco all I can seem to say is "yup, its got taste".

I just returned to my jar of Elizabethan Mixture which you reviewed a while back and man it was a treat. I didn't think it was great when I first got it a few months ago, but this one is so smooth.

Sometimes I think they're tinned up a bit young. A little age will definitely mellow it out though.

just tried this for the first time the other day. its now one of my favorites. i love how you can taste all the flavors equally. i love night cap but you pretty much just taste tons of latakia.standard mixture is much more balanced.

Masterful review, Bradley. I'm smoking my first tin of SM now. I wanted to start with this old review then move in to the 2020 one. Looks like a Peterson Aran 6 with p-lip. I have that pipe. Love it but it clenches a little heavy for me. Also, nice AC15 - that's my amp of choice for mod/garage music. I have a limited edition in hunter green tolex with grey grill cloth. Anyway, love your videos - invaluable insights. Thx.

You're one of the very few tobacco reviewers whose videos I can watch all the way through and think 'What, its over already?' As I am still relatively new to the hobby, I find the Dunhill blends slightly intimidating. However, I have a tin of each of the blends you've reviewed cellared in anticipation of the day I am ready for them.

I agree, there is no redundancy in the dunhill line as I've tried thusfar. well done by them. Dunhill and Pease lead the pack in blending to my tastes.

I'm 19 and have just started getting into pipe smoking. I had my first bowl of standard mixture the other day and i have to agree with what you say about this tobacco. I'm not getting everything at the moment but that's probably down to my undeveloped pallet

Another great review! I like Standard mixture a lot. I smoke mostly 965 and EMP because I can get it in bulk. You should give Dunhill London Mixture a try too....

"Crushed walnut shells" - spot on! I must have seen this review at least five times, but now, finally, I have seen it together with my first bowl of thst mixture. Will be interesting to see how it holds up to 965, which has been my "standard" so far, but which is maybe too sweet and complicated to smoke every day.

+Jimmie Svensson - I used to smoke 965 more often as well, but Standard Mixture took over its spot in my rotation. Definitely less sweet and better suited as an everyday English in my opinion.

I live in Saudi Arabia and got this from a shop in Jeddah! The taste is bitter, Metallic and strong, but it is kind of unique English Mixture. Maybe not so good for starters and has resemblance with Nightcap. Turkish Orientals are playing the background.

Great review Bradley. I also enjoyed this tobacco very much. Every Dunhill blend is exceptionally good. Definitely my favorite pipe tobacco Brand. I am waiting your review on The Royal Yacht. I am very very curious! this Royal Yacht completes my Holy Dunhill Trinity: Durbar/My mixture 965/ The Royal Yacht.

BTW were you able to test the mellow version as well? Quite liking it too! Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy listening to you. And in tobacco taste, pipe preferences, cleaning technique (I just leave the stirred up ashes in the pipe for a few minutes to soak up a bit of the moisture) and view on life. The "creosote, earthy taste" comes from the Latakia. I used to smoke pure Latakia.

I picked up a tin of this for the first time the other day and have been smoking it since. I get a very strong green olive flavour and smell from it. I am new to pipe smoking and am wondering if anyone else has noticed this. Thanks!

Stuff is harsh. Just got this blend today and the first bowl is good but the bowls after it were harsh. I would definitely advise a good beverage with it.

I bought a tin of this a while back ago, and never got to smoke it. I think at one point the seal was broken on it, cause it was so dry it fell apart in my hand. i was pretty upset.

Hello Brad, quick question, sorry its on this particular video. Where/how does one go about finding and purchasing a Dunhill Second pipe. I hear of there famed quality for price, but never how to acquire one. Please help this Pipe noob.

I'm afraid I can't really answer that question. Dunhill claims that they destroy any bowls they turn which don't meet their standards. Others claim that Dunhill rejects were (and perhaps still are) turned into Parker or Hardcastle pipes (Dunhill owns these names). I've done a bit of research on it myself, and I'm not convinced that any brand is a true Dunhill second brand.

Bitter, acrade yeah, I like aroma and fruit cake or spice, something you probably don't, I found this tobacco fumy with that funny aftertaste, I hope to try some more unadulterated tobacco this being my first has not made me in a rush. I smoke Cubans and much prefer the richness and purity of a cigar than this, in a Australia your limited for choice, I'll keep my eyes out to try some other brands you have reviewed that don't have toppers or added flavours that I might enjoy

Do you think the shape of the pipe affects the flavor or even tongue bite? Just asking because you seem to have a lot of experience.

Dumitriusus - It's all pretty subjective. There are people who will swear up and down that certain kinds of blends smoke better in certain shapes. I haven't noticed much difference in flavor with different pipes. I WILL say that shape can effect tongue bite or the harshness of a blend. A longer stem can cool the smoke a bit, as can a bent stem. A very short stem with a broad bowl can smoke a bit hot. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. Just find the shapes you enjoy and smoke them. After a while, you'll develop your own preferences.
