A strong blend of Dark-Fired Kentucky, Red Virginia, and bright Flue-Cured Virginia, "JackKnife Plug" packs quite a punch, but how does it taste?
Find out!
From the tin: "Dark-fired Kentucky Leaf and ripe red Virginia tobaccos, with their deep, earthy flavors, are layered on a central core of golden flue-cured for a hint of bright sweetness, then pressed and matured in cakes, and finally cut into 2 oz blocks. Slice it thick and rub it out for a ribbon cut, thin for a shag, or chop it into cubes. The choice is yours."

A few things... 1) Man, you seriously do THE BEST tobacco reviews out of anyone on KZfaq. Really man, keep it up! I just ordered some Elizabethian mixture based upon your reviews. 2) What is with the solid background now? Pipe smoking, even for a review, should always be casual. The solid colored background gives your more recent reviews a slight "evening news" feel. Your apartment seems interesting enough. 3) I think it would be quite funny for you to do a review of Captain Black, Prince Albert or some other goopy, low grade drug store cavendish and yet give it every bit as much thought and attention to detail, including the pompous accent, as you do for the high-quality tinned tobaccos.

+Cheeseybacun - I appreciate the positive feedback! Pro tip: If there is a backdrop behind me, I might NOT be in my apartment. I've thought of reviewing some of those drug-store blends, but then I'd have to actually smoke them! We'll see though. Some of them actually aren't all that terrible.
@Cheeseybacun

+Stuff&Things Yes indeed, not all of them are super bad, but many, unfortunately. Perhaps the apple cavendish (John Middleton?) that you described as smoking when you first turned 18? Tis' a shame it is only available in a pouch, which would look most hilarious and out of place in comparison to various tins on display in your other reviews.

Glad I watched this one, because I ended up _loving_ this blend! I got quite a few laughs out of this one too. It's an awesome full belly blend. Loving plugs & cakes as much as I do, Jackknife is yet another Pease recipe that's made its way into my rotation. I know this vid is a couple years old, but hardly outdated and very well-done! 👍

That fine shag is the way I like to prepare it, as well. To me, it brings out the most from the blend. That's not to say that there's anything wrong with cube-cutting it, or cutting it to a coarse ribbon, but the fine shag works best for me. Great reviews! A friend suggested I check out your channel. Like Bradley I have a high N tolerance; cigars, Gawith twists, Dark Birds eye, Irish flake - none of these seem to affect me. I picked up a sample of Jack Knife plug at The Briar Shoppe during a visit to Houston Texas (thanks Ross! definitely check out this B&M if you happen to visit Houston). Jack-Knife plug is the only blend I have tried that "put me out" so to speak; I found the flavor to be very, very forward. Enjoyable, but heavy; the 'steak sauce' smell comes through in the smoke. It is not for the faint of heart and I enjoy it sparingly. One tin goes a long way.

Nice concise tobacco review there, old boy. OT - Ahh - Bradley, I think I hit jackpot - I just tried an oz of Cornell & Diel Bayou Night - it's a medium/full Virginia with Perique and it seemed just perfect. It's described as a "Scottish type blend of Latakia, Perique, Virginias, Turkish, and Burleys that boasts a heavier Perique component than normally found in a classic Scottish blend." When I opened the bag and took a deep whiff it stunk - almost a tangy, cheesy smell (like the grandfather's boot smell you gave on the GL Pease) and I thought "Oh Christ, what have I bought...) But on smoking it burnt nice and smooth and then the perique really came through. A little more rough cut than Nightcap and without the Latakia but that's ok . I urge you to try it if you haven't already. I smoked it in my new Savinelli 'Hercules EX' so no previous after smells to mix it up. I even found the perfect aperitif to go with it - Joaquin wild Cherry Brandy mixed with 50% Joaquin Ginger Brandy to take away the sweetness. I know this isn't the perfect environment to smoke these blends with the air conditioner running full, but it certainly bodes well for those autumn evenings to come. PS. I like the beard you have coming in - people are right, it does suit you....

I finally tried a tin of this wonderful blend. It has an interesting savory flavor with a very small bit of sweetness, almost like putting a bit of sugar on some bbqued meat. It smokes really cool too. I know you said more for a treat due to the flavor but tongue bite-wise you can have bowl after bowl. I still like Irish Flake more for this genre of dark fired burley blends, but that's just because I prefer more sweetness.

Really enjoying you vids. I just started smoking a pipe over a month ago ... this is helping me sort through what I want to try. I'm a huge fan of English blends, although I do like an aromatic now and again. Nightcap is my favorite. It was the first English I tried and I loved it. Which I think makes me odd. I also love HP Sauce, so I may have to try the JackKnife Plug.

Did you notice that the Kentucky layers bookend the plug? The darker bands on the top and bottom are Kentucky, with the thick band of Virginia in the middle. Do you think that will affect how it ages, and especially how the components “marry” (or not) over time? Love to know your thoughts! Thanks!

Honestly, I love the elaborate, atmospheric, and kind of pretentious tin descriptions. However, I want some cranky old blender to make a tobacco with a tin description much like this: "It's a Virginia from somewhere in North Carolina, I think. Vintage? Hell if I know. Who cares? It's a golden Virginia, what the Hell else do you expect?" I'd buy it.

Hi Bradley, just noticed you use the pipe zippo instead of the Peterson "Old Boy" lighter you normally have. How happy are you with the Zippo? Do you have to draw much stronger to get the flame to the tobacco? Any impact from using a gasoline lighter rather than butane on the taste of the tobaccos? Love the "blend your own"-recipe btw...
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 9 жыл бұрын
schlagi1 - I usually use the Zippo when I'm outdoors because of its wind resistance, but it just happened to be near when I did the video. I like it. You DO have to work a little harder drawing it in as the flame is not as hot, and if you over-fill it, you COULD get some fluid in your pipe if you're not careful. Other than that, it works quite well.
@schlagi1
@schlagi1 9 жыл бұрын
Stuff&Things Thanks Bradley, I'm seriously thinking about buying the Zippo, exactly for having a reliable lighter when being out and about. The advice on not overfilling is very helpful, and I take it from your comment that you do not confirm the "common wisdom" that using a gasoline lighter does as such affect the taste? Best, Marc
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 9 жыл бұрын
I love soft-flame butane lighters for pipes, but outdoors, a Zippo really comes in handy. And, yes, I've found that as long as you're not overfilling the Zippo to the point that fluid is actually dripping into your pipe bowl, the taste is not an issue.

Sounds like it's similar to Rattray's Stirling Flake, that smelt like star anise and beef bouillon.

Salty Tiger - No anise smell or flavor, but it definitely has a bit of bouillon.

***** - Directly into the camera. I'm still using the Rhode Smartlav+, which is balanced for a smartphone jack, so when I plug directly into the camera I have to use an adapter.

+kirin3214 - I'm very happy to have a Japanese viewer! Don't worry about your English. It is quite easy to understand. I haven't tried the tobacco you mentioned, but I will definitely look into it.

As a former cigarette smoker, what pipe tobacco blend have you found to have the highest nicotine content?
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 8 жыл бұрын
+- J. - It's always subjective, but this blend is up there. You also might want to check out Peterson "Irish Flake." Dunhill "Elizabethan Mixture" is pretty strong as well.

This blend sounds similar to C&D Five O'clock Shadow, except C&D leads you to believe it has a hint of Kentucky when in fact it is a hint of Virginia if anything lol

+Stuff&Things It's pretty good. I think it's odd though; you really taste the Virginias each time when lighting, and then it mellows out to a smooth, strong Kentucky flavor. Perique pops in every once and a while. I think it would be something you would enjoy. The crumble cake is fun to pack, and it's pretty tolerant to heat as well.
