I flew down to Kentucky to pick up a 1977 Piper Arrow for a friend. We found a lot of water in the fuel, played with the technology and tried to show you a good demonstration on how the landing gear system operates. Let me know if you like these longer videos!

Thanks, Jamie. Like all things, I wish I could have done it a little better. We kind of did it "impromptu", but I didn't remember seeing a good demonstration of the gear on the Arrow before so I thought I'd give it a shot! Two of my best friends have Arrows. Great way to go pretty fast without breaking the bank. The turbo must be amazing up at altitude.

Great video, John! I'm still learning all the different aircraft that are out there. I don't think I'll ever remember all of them, but that was a super interesting gear system! First I've heard of, or have seen that. Glad they put that pin in the gear handle there - what a bad day abruptly ending a flight because you couldn't climb due to an automatic system. Thankfully engineers learn from their mistakes, and move forward. Nice easy fix on the autopilot too - added bonus! Beautiful aircraft there - looks brand new! Congrats, Dan! 👍 Thanks for sharing the trip, John. 😎
@quinnjim
@quinnjim 3 жыл бұрын
The gear system started out as a good idea. Who wouldn't want a little help putting the gear down if you forgot it?? It did actually cause a few crashes, so I think most Arrow owners have had it disabled. It's kind of like the MCAS system on the 737 MAX. The engineers thought that they would help the pilots get the nose down if they pitched up too steeply. They never thought about the angle of attack indicator malfunctioning and pushing the nose down when it wasn't needed. For some reason, they didn't put any redundancy into that system either. They have it fixed now, but the damage has been done.
@SmittySmithsonite

@@quinnjim - Yeah, definitely alot of similarities there. Sounds great on paper, but there's always unintended consequences. Hindsight is always 20/20 unfortunately. That whole thing was a mess. I couldn't believe they didn't even mention that system at all during type training as I've heard. Big mistake there, plus they gave it far too much authority. Good thing we've got the best trained pilots in the world here, or we'd probably have a few smoking holes ourselves. I've been tracking the MAX on FlightAware. They've been doing test flights - tail # N7201S. Lately there's been quite a few. I figure it won't be long before they're back flying again. Will be the safest aircraft built today, no doubt!

This was an excellent video. Probably one of the best you've done (and it didn't even feature any of your kids! Imagine that. :-). I love this style of cross-country flying video. The more of these you can do, the more I'll selfishly consume them. (And way to keep representing Matt over at Demo Ranch! Good on ya.) Thank you for the explanation of the auto-gear system. That was something I had no idea was on any smaller aircraft. Cool stuff.

Yeah, we missed an important step! Stick to the checklist. Each time I released pressure on the emergency "down" lever, I'm sure the gear started coming up again. I kind of did this "off the cuff" and could have done a much better job if I had planned for it. I knew I'd make some Arrow guys cringe! I think people get a basic understanding of how it works, but I want to redo that part for sure.

@@quinnjim I enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing it. And I look at it as us all being students of aviation. My instructor would sometimes reach down and pull the breaker when I wasn’t looking and when it was time to put the gear down, nothing happened. @quinnjim
@quinnjim 3 жыл бұрын
Water in the gas is pretty rare. Usually you get it when the airplane sits outside during heavy rain. The gas caps are sealed, but the seals go bad after a few decades and they let some water in. You can also get some condensation in the tanks that will produce water in the fuel sample. I think Dan appreciated the check out, but it's a lot less stressful flying without somebody judging your every move. He'll get REALLY comfortable after 20 hours in the airplane solo.

MY instructor crashed on a charter flight in 1970 in Conn. They said it was water in the fuel. I stopped taking lessons. Thinking it was a sign from god. Flying is all i ever really wanted to do,but was afraid if anything happened to me my wife and kid would pay the price.Sorry im long winded. Anyway at 66 years old thinking of going for my private. Wanted to tell you your vidios and your daughters gave me the confidence to think about starting again ,so thank you! So what do you do when you find water in the fuel on your pre flight? I know, that was a long way to go to ask a question. lol
@quinnjim
@quinnjim 3 жыл бұрын
Water in the fuel is pretty uncommon. It's easy to find, some guys just get lazy and don't check. You simply sump the tanks before each flight. If there is any water in the tank, it will come out. If you find some contaminated fuel, you just keep taking samples until they come out clean. I've been flying for over 20,000 hours and I've never had an issue. I've found water a few times, but I just clear it all out before I go fly. You should definitely go take some lessons. Don't enter retirement with any regrets!!

When you plaster cameras in front of the windscreen (or any airplane window) you've endangered yourself and the flying public, because you've blotted out a portion of the sky where a plane could be flying. At two miles a plane is just a speck hiding behind the GoPro. The FAA should outlaw this practice. VFR means see and avoid. You can't avoid what you can't see. I didn't see a run-up and mag check.
