@castellanos64362 жыл бұрын
@@Gabe_-pw7xv The Spanish Empire was already on decline by the late 1700s. You also have to think about the French Invasions and the Spanish American Independence wars. The extension of the Spanish Empire at that time was too huge to be manage by one monarchy, so Spain was already in a weak state (so was France as well). Spain's business was in America not in Spain. Besides, Spain was never as industrialised as the UK (the industrial Revolution began in UK) that helped you on producing more ships with less. In fact no other country in the world was as industrialised as you , hence why you were unbeatable for a century. This and countless internal social economic problems is why you won in Trafalgar. The 250 years before that Spain was the unbeatable.

Admittedly that is a very well trained well disciplined crew, getting what I believe is a Fifth Rate or Fourth Rate of the Line ready for battle within what I believe in film was under ten minutes. This was what the Royal Navy actually strived for with its more professional crews during the Golden Age of Piracy. Because Pirate attacks tended to be unconventional by definition, the Royal Navy tried to train its crews to be ready for action at the drop of a hat.

Something that always bothered me was that Groves was not the leader of the expedition, he was a hero in the battle of pirates of the Caribbean 1, he helped the East Indies and survived the battle in the maelstrom, anyone would imagine that all those feats would be worth it the title of Admiral at least and many medals on his chest. But in Stranger Tides he ended up being one more servant, his entire military life was spent receiving orders from Norrigton, Becket and now Barbossa, it is sad that someone so loyal to the crown and the king did not receive the promotion he deserved. Groves deserved his own ship and his crew, not everyone survives all those battles
@ElDiarioDeKarlana Жыл бұрын
Even in his death he was loyal to the crown and tried to claim that land in the name of King George, Gillette also deserved something more, maybe to be Groves's assistant, but both ended up being used and betrayed by Barbossa, a pirate who never deserved be a privateer
@westwardstar1686 Жыл бұрын
I really liked that they brought them both back. Also considering how they survived, with no plot armor lol, the past events of other movies.
@AJadedLizard Жыл бұрын
I have to wonder if Groves was sent along to keep an eye on Barbossa, but it's also possible serving secondhand to a privateer (who you lost your last ship to despite outnumbering about a dozen to one) was a punishment for him losing Endeavor. Defeat tends to get assigned to the highest-ranked surviving officer, who would've been Groves by that point. A lesser man might've resigned by Groves was made of sterner stuff and stayed loyal to a King who didn't deserve his service. It's honestly a bit of a shame he died here, since I think he could've genuinely done well for himself as an actual pirate under Barbossa, especially with the other Royal Navy dropouts he attracted.

The Royal Navy was defeated multiple times by the Spanish Navy, but History omits it. Francis Drake, was defeated in Veracruz in the battle of San Juan de Ulua in 1568. The Invincible English, invasion fleet sent by Elizabeth I to defeat to the Spanish navy, was defeated by Spain and its navy in 1589. Edward Vernon was defeated in Cartagenas De Indias by Blas de Lezo in 1741. Horacio Nelson, the great victor of Trafalgar, was defeated in Tenerife, Spain, 25 of July of 1797.

"We be privateers not pirates master Gibbs, and in the kings name we'll behave as such." Privateers were pirates paid to act like pirates and not attack the navy of the nation they were privateering for. They'd also be granted immunity toward this nation. Example, Edward Teach (Blackbeard) was an English privateer along side Benjamin Hornigold during the Queen Anne's War, when the war ended and their privateering days were over they went back to normal piracy, which of course was illegal, though most evidence suggests Blackbeard and Hornigold even after the war refused to attack English ships out of loyalty.

Barbossa in the world of potc, is a well known pirate who used to be the famous undead captain of the black pearl, and also one of the pirate lords. He is one of the main pirates that can be held responsible for the fall of the east indian trading company by releasing a literal god. Yet, he became a privateer. With that background do you think he would have been allowed a proper job? I think it was a comment to stop Gibbs being cheeky.
@stuff86585 жыл бұрын
That’s actually not true believe me I know more then you. Edward Teach was a privateer working for the English ok he was English Privateer. A privateer is by definition a Private man hired by the king to work so it’s not a soldier but a person who flys the colours of the person they work for. So he isn’t a pirate he is a private man working for king George. Btw look it up.

Among the great achievements of the Spanish Navy are the discovery of the American continent, (not a country) by the admiral in the service of Spain, Christopher Columbus. The first circumnavigation of the world by Juan Sebastián Elcano. The discovery of the maritime route between Asia and the American continent by Andrés de Urdaneta. The Spanish Armada was the most powerful in the world from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century and continued to be a naval force of world reference until well into the 19th century. Before the Royal Navy was the owner of the seas, its predecessor was the Spanish Navy, who dominated the seas and made Spain the first global empire in world history. PLUS ULTRA

The hunt for the fountain is meant to be covert exhibition in a time of heightened tension between England and Spain. The last thing either side wants to know publicly is their ships to fire one another. That’s why the Spaniard didn’t even acknowledge Barbossa’s ship even though he has the advantage of numbers and firepower.

1:26 Even if they were going to fight, it's 3 ships to 1.....no-way they could've won anyhow, not without significant losses. It appears the Spanish have a much more sensible captain.....plus, why get ready for battle station when no warning of an attack has been made....

Not only it’s 3 ships to 1, it’s 3 Galleons against a 6th rate ship, it’s like trying to fight 3 school busses whilst being in a Mini Cooper
@daltonturner31137 ай бұрын
Because this was a time period where the British and Spanish were at a constant conflict. Seeing an opposing force is a solid reason to prepare for battle, at least to defend yourself if need be. But of course that Spaniards here had their eyes on the fountain of youth, not this single 6th rate British vessel

when you realize that irl the only difference between pirate and privateer was one little sheet of paper...
@speed150mph2 жыл бұрын
Well that and limitations. Privateers were sponsored by one government to attack another countries ships, often during a time of war. Essentially they were mercenaries, privatized commerce raiders. But with that in mind, if your a privateer under the English government, they might not look well upon you if you targeted British ships. Pirates has no such limitations. They would generally attack merchant ships regardless of what ensign they flew.
@kawikaahina17592 жыл бұрын
@@speed150mph True, but when the golden age of piracy began, some pirates out right refused to attack british ships anyways (at first), and several privateers were known for attacking any foreign ships they came across, even if the government they worked for wasn't at war with them. They weren't that profesional, for them this was an adventure, and the paper they signed was just their excuse to do this.

I'm 4 years late but one thing that bothered me was the fact that the Spanish had 3 ships on that expedition yet King George only sent 1 you'd think having the largest and most powerful Navy of that time you'd send more then 1 ship
@ElDiarioDeKarlana Жыл бұрын
This also bothered me, in the other movies the British navy had many ships, even in Port Royal there were several of them, but in this very important mission they only sent one ship, and they didn't load it with so many redcoat soldiers, they didn't put more lieutenants either. to help Barbosa, yes, Groves and Gillette were the best but in the other films there were always several officers in blue coats helping, yes he felt as if the king did not care about the expedition at all
@AJadedLizard Жыл бұрын
What I don't get is why the Spanish sent a devoted captain and three full crews, while the English dispatched a single privateer of dubious loyalty. There's no reason for the King to not expect Barbossa to turn on him.
@jaypeedesuyo662 Жыл бұрын
Wrong, Spain was the dominant power during this time. PoC is set in the mid 18th Century. Britain was still a new player in the block.
