That ball is OBVIOUSLY fair. The rule is that if any part of the ball is OVER the line, it's fair. The point of contact between the ball and the ground can be completely in foul territory, but if the edge of the ball is in space over the line, then the ball is FAIR. That is what we have here. OBR Definitions, Fair Ball: "..... or that, while on *or over* fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player,..." In other words, if any part of the ball is hanging over the line when it is touched, it is a fair ball. This is a very clear situation, if you know the rules.
@jamesmurray3948
@jamesmurray3948 3 жыл бұрын
If you know the rules you will know that that ball satisfies the foul ball definition in the rules also but we all defer to fair for a ball that has to be adjudged before the base. If that ball first hit in the outfield it could well be foul per the rules and an MLB interp. In any case if @Jomboy had played any kind of baseball, Tball, recball, LL, PONY I'm amazed that he couldn't tell that the ball was fair. Rule mavens, such as I, can point out the gray areas of the fair foul definitions but that ball, being over fair territory, has been called fair in any game in the history of baseball.
@shawnchandler8719
@shawnchandler8719 3 жыл бұрын
Is it reviewable though? It was clearly fair, but I was under the impression that the ref let it play on. It was so close, that if it was foul, it could've been reviewed. Instead of calling it foul, and costing a team some runs regardless of the outcome of the challenge.

"Foul Ball" "Definition" "The foul lines and foul poles are used to demarcate fair territory and, thus, determine what constitutes a foul ball. Any batted ball that first contacts a fielder while the ball is in foul territory is considered foul. If not touched by a fielder in fair territory, any batted ball that first contacts the field in foul territory beyond first or third base -- with the foul lines and foul poles counting as fair territory -- is considered foul. *Batted balls that first contact the field between home plate and first or third base are considered foul if they don't subsequently bounce over or directly contact either base, otherwise pass either base while in fair territory, or ultimately settle at some point in fair territory between home plate and either base.* " If any portion of the ball is in fair territory the ball is fair. The lines are fair territory. That ball was touched with part of the ball in fair territory. That was a fair ball.

@@notahotshot I agree we call that a fair ball. but your definition does not come from the rules which have some ambiguity. "A FOUL BALL is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground." There is even a difference in how a fly ball hitting the ground in the outfield is judged fair or foul as opposed to a ball prior to the base. MLB has an interp that explains how they want it called.

@@Kildayyan No. What often does happen is for example the batter lays down a bunt on the 3rd base line. Let me try to clarify this with an analogy. Think of that chalk line like the goal line in football. If ANY PART of the baseball has "crossed the plane" at the moment when it is touched, it is a fair ball. It's just that simple and even this replay angle shows that with perfect clarity. The ball itself does not have to be physically touching the line (common misconception).

In tennis, the ball is judged edge to edge against the line so even if the bottom of the ball doesn't touch, the edge hanging over the line is still considered in play. I would say that may also be the case for this but yeah that one angle is tough to judge. Crazy that they won this game though after that.
