"It doesn't matter if your game has amazing stats, or incredible game mechanics or anything like that. Sometimes you just want to sit down and listen to a robot playing music." This is going into my lexicon, and if I ever do make anything, it's going in there.

God, I forgot how incredible the art direction and sheer environmental density was put into this game. It’s truly an interactive art exhibit. I wish it was able to have been a longer play through with more cryptic puzzles, but it still excels in what it was designed to do.

It absolutely slays me when Thor is going on about how everything in the cypher language is important to the lore, and the journal in the flat says "FFFFFSSDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOEHEHEHEHEHEG DDDDDDDDDDDQQQQQQWW" and the subtitles are just "nah, I'm dumb, it's actually gibberish" The thought of you having an archive of screenshot to decode, and most are random letters that look pretty kills me 🤣

Length of a game vs cost of a game. Time invested might be the phrase I'd use. Thing is, not all games are the same kind of entertainment. You can dump 1000 hours in some multiplayer shooter where you do the same things over and over against other players and that brings with it a competitive triumph and other feelings. However, a narrative game, a story driven game. That's more akin to watching a movie. The difference is, you get immersed because you're part of that story, you're the driving element. That is more comparable to the cost vs length of a movie if you're still trying to look at it that way. So hour per dollar is far higher, but the emotional aspect of that is a very different thing, something a shooter you dump 1000 hours into can never really replicate. Truth is, you can't really compare the cost to the duration in the same way simply because the cost to make a game like this you'd dump 1000 hours into would be impossibly high. You're paying for a very different kind of content and therefore paying a very different kind of cost. Another good game you could get this same thing from was Firewatch. That game lasted maybe 3 hours for me, but was a very satisfying experience despite the shorter length. You just can't look at it in terms of length vs cost like you can other games.

This is a game you play exactly twice... once at first, second to get all the memories, songs, secrets, etc. Then you're done... but both times it's so -satisfying-. Stray is a subtle masterpiece. It's what you show to anyone who claims video games can't be deep, meaningful art.

caught the first half of the stream live, and have fully watched the longplay at least 3 times in the past week since I also caught The Virus (tm). Your commentary is probably some of the most insightful and amazing I've had the pleasure of listening to. Definitely going to catch more of your streams live :D edit: also props to steets for the editing of the video, didn't even notice the first time until I was like, "wait, where'd that part go?" Super cool, very quality-of-life. also, B-12 perhaps a reference to BlueTwelve?

Ha. Found you a couple of weeks ago and suddenly KZfaq is suggesting this. Maybe because I like Stray so much. I love that it was such a contained, closed experienced. Not really too long, but also not dragging out. And just enjoyable at the end. And as you said at the end, the emotional weight at the end is just wonderful. Hope and sadness. Hope that studio will do more in that direction. - And I don't mean Cat. I mean building worlds and stories. Cat is fine too!

Took four days for me to watch this, but man was that a great game to watch you play. I almost teared up at the end there. I wish more games were good at story telling as well as environmental story telling like this game was and how well the interaction with it worked. Long live B-12 ! Which funny enough is a vitamin too.

Thor, KZfaq has suddenly been recommending me your content; and I have to say I'm loving it. I'm currently in my second year of obtaining my degree in game design. I started with zero knowledge / skills, other than having played games my whole life. I'm now quite proficient in 3D modeling / texturing (Maya, Photoshop, Susbstance Painter) and have become familiar with the Unity game engine and quite a few of it's features. The only thing I feel lacking in is coding, even visual scripting just doesn't really click for me. I want to be in a design position so I'm not too concerned about the programming for me personally. My main focus now and after finishing my degree is to really develop my portfolio with some nice pieces. I'm local to WA myself. Any advice for my future endeavors? If you read this thanks, if you don't read this thanks. Oh, also I just hit 30 this year if that plays into your response at all.

Hey dude I’m a cs major right now and have been following this thor guy for the past couple weeks. I suggest you watch his shorts because they can be quite motivational and informative for game maker type people. My guess for his advice would be that he’d say to just go make stuff. Make what you enjoy making. Or find a team or get on one and begin creating something bigger. Do your thing. I wanted to become an app developer so I just… started makin apps haha. You really can just make whatever you set your mind to within reason. So go make stuff! Have fun

Btw the best way to feel more competent from a coding standpoint is literally just to go practice coding. Go make a game with some interesting features in Unity which relies on (i think, based on the limited unity knowledge i have) scripting primarily. Those scripts can be anything from super basic to kinda dense stuff but all of it can benefit you. Or maybe go learn java and make some crap idk. What languages do you needa learn to make games? Dew it. Learn it. Game it!

If you're big into language translating might I suggest Chants of Sennaar. It's a short little game about deciphering languages but I had some fun with it.
@ProzacStylings
@ProzacStylings 4 ай бұрын
He did a longplay of Tunic, which has an actual language in it based on English phonemes and includes hints on how to translate it, and he didn't show any real interest in actually translating and reading the language in game despite those translations being helpful for a whole bunch of puzzles and necessary for a couple. It seems he's not really interested in languages, he just likes the idea of direct cyphers from English because heartbound uses one and he's dealt with them before in things like defcon puzzles.
