For me, once I realized how significant it was switching from front sight focus to target focus, that was the end. Never going back to iron sights. Training occluded is just mind blowing.

I'm over 60 and it is hard for me to focus on iron sights without my reading glasses. I've gone to red dots and they are a god send. They take work in order to be able to pick up the red dot quickly. But once I put in the work, I'm a whole lot faster and more accurate at longer distances. And in low light red dots are like cheating when compared to iron sights.

Wild Bill Hickok dropped a man dead at 70 yards using his Colt Navy percussion pistol. I should mention that Hickok was losing his eyesight rapidly by the age of 35. I’m turning 61 in a month, and my eyesight is great. I’ve tried other people’s red dot on a few occasions, but it’s not something that I need yet. It always great watching you, Coch! 👍👍👍👍

Thanks, I always enjoy your presentations! I feel you covered all the germane points very well. Not only am I old school, but old as well and transitioned to MRDs about three years ago. At distance my accuracy is vastly superior to irons. As part of our church's security team, accuracy in a crowded environment is critical. And like you say, up close and dirty, it will be point shooting.

Love the history and interesting facts of weapons that were used under NAVSPECWAR. Been to Dam Neck twice for an A and C school. Would've been awesome to get a tour guide of all the equipment, stories, little nit picky issues that operators personally dealt with. "Of course that would only ever happen in my dreams."

I have a Holosun with the circl dot, but now also have a Holosun with an ACSS Vulcan reticle. It has a chevron in the center with a huge circle around it. Almost however you bring the gun up you’re going to see the large circle which tells you which way you need to adjust to find the chevron. You don’t use the circle for aiming. It’s there to tell you if you need to adjust up, down, left, or right. It works, and it’s fast.

I had a doctor optic on a Glock with a rear sight dovetail mount in 2001. The sights were not built to withstand the reciprocation of the slide. Great idea, but it was not reliable. The dot would flicker, and it wouldn't hold zero. Before that we were using collimator sights on handguns, but they would be mounted to the frame rather than the slide. This was wonderful for competition, but because of the bulkiness of this set up it was all but useless for a carry gun. Fast forward to about 2009, Trijicon came out with the RMR. They had the same problem as the Doctor Optics as in it would flicker and wouldn't hold zero. It wasn't until 2012ish that Trijicon focused on making a sight that would hold up to being on a reciprocating slide. Now here we are. Nothing totally new under the sun.

I have spent too much on Sig 226 and red dots but found the best combo. If you have SIG 226 with rx cut. Best with Steiner MPS. The apex acro mount plates work the best. Have tried a few. The acro is a hair too long, rest on the slide. Unless you have a 226 with rxp cut. Then you can use the Romeo 2 or the acro.

I started using MRDS on pistols 7 or 8 years ago . For my primary pistols I'll probably never go back to BUIS only . All of my 9mms have MRDS and all my 45s are BUIS . All my 45s are higher end 1911s . I do train with both MRDS and BUIS . At first I could still shoot BUIS faster in matches . After solid 12 - 18 months of using nothing but MRDS I became faster , more accurate and I was now target focused . I would cover up my MRDS Glass so I could still see the dot but I could not look through the glass. This is how i became target focused and this is what worked for me .. I've actually had my from sight fall off on my G19 in the middle of Pistol class . It was factory Glock Front TNS. Luckily I brought an extra G19 with me to finish the class . To be fair that G19 had 20k plus rounds fired . I bought that G19 in 2006 and sold it I. 2016 . For a solid 5 years that was my only PISTOL and I trained a lot back then because 9mm was 10cents a round lol..

The only time I tried to use a reflex sight to hit a living target, it was on a coyote running uphill. I drew down on him with my rifle and - wham - the dot was was washed out by the sun low above the hill. That's not intended as a knock on red dots because even iron sights or a scope would have been challenging to use in this particular situation.

I'm still not a fan, but i think they're getting closer. Give me a enclosed emitter with a 2 moa dot and a 60 moa outer circle, and i think we'll finally be ready for prime time. I am in total agreement with Ken Hackathorn though, I really don't think it's relevant for close range self defense shooting. Once you hit 20+ yard ranges, they really start to shine. I also agree 100% you need to put in thousands of reps/presentations to master a red dot, they are actually counter productive for shooters who wont do that, IMO.

You really have to train into a red dot. First time out to the range I really did not like it. I was kind of bummed out and thought I would have liked it more.... Once I did the work and got proper training with it, and tons of dry fire practice. Its a different world. Once you figure out what you are doing wrong, and how to find the dot every time you draw. It really helps. Also with red dots your eyes do less work than with iron sights.

I guess I am a heretic. I really have no interest in handguns outside of home defense. I started with a red dot and had the "can't find the dot" problem and meanwhile tick-tock. I realized that I would never have the need to shoot it more than 40 feet. I mounted a green laser integral with the light. The laser is very bright, instantly acquired day or night, and at 40 feet, exactly where the hole will be. Everyone in the room will know this and we can proceed from there. I understand carry is different, but for home defense irons and a laser for me. Thanks for what you do Coch.

Recently another youtuber named Eaglerun23 had a trick to practice and get used to a red dot using a piece of blue painters tape over the front of the red dot glass. The idea is to keep both eyes open and one eye sees only the dot with no back ground, the other eye picks up the target and your brain puts the two together.
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 2 жыл бұрын
That's how it started out, only reflecting the dot in the eye and superimposing the image of the other eye. It's used to learn target focus as well. There were some videos for that by the humble marksman a few years back. There was some specific sight used in south africa and Ian from forgotten weapons could test it but I can't remember what it was called.

I "feel" as though pistol red dots slows me down and introduces doubt to the shot at close distances in well lit situations (watching the dot bounce around doesn't "feel" good). When I shoot in the "dark" with my 507c I know the lead will land. Sincerely, Irons on a pistol Fudd

Nice video, great comments, history review & discussion! Several times in the video you mention using a weapon-mounted light (WML) to identify a target. In the civilian world it's hammered into our brains that you should NEVER point a gun at anything that you're not willing shoot/kill. But if you are using a WML to identify a target, aren't you doing just that? And if you have to use a WML to identify the target in the first place, should you even have your gun out? Curious to hear your thoughts.

I’m way faster with red dot with fast accuracy. I learned to “throw the red dot” where I want it. Meaning like you would throw a rock. Hand eye coordination is natural thus brain has easier time understanding that concept. I look where I want to put my dot, then I let my hands from the draw do rest, with “throwing action” coming into play as I present the weapon. Now it’s natural and I use 2 and 3 moa dots. Practice low ready with eyes closed to see what the bad habits are. Plenty of KZfaq methods out there. But I am the originator of throwing the dot into space to hit what you want.

While you wait, check those 'battery less' holosun offerings that mount directly to a OR cut without a plate. If what you decide on has batteries, make sure you can change them without removing the sight cause the screws will be done after doing that several times and have the correct screws with the right length, threads and use torque setting from the manufacturer. Look through a few before you buy something (astigmatism), to see if you see a dot.

For the money, Brownells makes a slide with an optics cut at a great price - works fine for my 17. Really, any reputable brand like Agency Arms or ZEV should be fine, too. They're all drop-in parts. I would avoid windowed versions - sand/debris could get in there and the lightened slide will make spring choice another variable to worry over.
