Vital cross bracing was removed and the structure was mortally rusted through. The structural composition of the bridge is explained.
See the steel structure used a special steel that was not painted and rusted on purpose.
This bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh on Jan 28 at 6:40am. With zero fatalities. Located on Forbes Avenue over the Fern Hollow Creek in Frick Park. The bridge was listed as poor condition on the DOT database. The bridge was built in 1971. Structural steel illustrated.
The steel type on this bridge rusted intentionally to form a corrosion barrier. A structural brace had snapped off and this is shown in this video.

Cor ten steel needs multiple wet and dry cycles to form the protective layer to stop rusting. With a stream underneath and all the trees around it might have never stopped rusting. Also the pvc drain was not the original construction. The original drain probably rusted away and put water on the steel. The temperature was near 0 degrees that morning, if the expansion joints were not working the bridge could have contracted 3”

I left Pittsburgh just a few months ago and lived right near that bridge. I drove over it with my family all the time, and walked under it almost every day as that is part of Frick Park. I always got a vague unsteady feeling walking under such a large bridge, but I thought authorities, engineers, etc knew what they were doing. As others have said, it's a miracle no one was killed.

@@aa_0n711 Those cables are actually quite strong. The problem is they only have strength in tension, while the solid crossbeams provide strength in both tension and compression. With just the cables and the remaining single pair of upper crossbeams, any compression (inward) loading between the two columns on that side would go to those upper crossbeams alone. It's too early to know for sure, but it would be very surprising if the removal of those lower crossbeams were not a contributing factor (if not the primary factor) in the collapse. With how badly those lower crossbeams were corroded back in 2018, the upper crossbeams also likely had significant corrosion damage. Maybe one of those upper crossbeams finally failed on the night of the collapse, leaving nothing left to handle the compression load on that side.

Cor-Ten steel, all the rage in the Seventies, forms an oxide coating that prevents further rusting. HOWEVER, when exposed to salt, the oxide coating is stripped away and the steel rusts like any other mild steel.

Are you talking about all the de-icing salt? . It makes sense the overhang prevented salt collecting on the steel beams directly below the deck. But seems like deicing salt really did a lot of damage lower down the structure. The base of the legs and bracing were like paper.

It's inconceivable how you can frequently attribute a bridge collapse to easily traceable factors, chiefly maintenance related. Something that was before the eyes of everyone: workers, inspectors even the people passing by probably for so long that even Google captured a bridge in a state it almost certainly wasn't built to stand. Folks as a structural engineer I can tell you that removing the cross bracing and replacing it with cables is a perfectly acceptable repair if done correctly. X-bracing members carry only tension forces, so replacing them with cables provides the same general structural behavior. It is possible that when the original bracing failed, load redistribution occurred which placed unintended lateral load on the columns, which induced bending stresses about their minor axes. If the new cables were not tensioned to pull the structure back into its original geometry, then these new stresses would have become permanent and could have contributed to the buckling of the columns.

You make a valid point. Deciding if a structure is in imminent risk of collapse is not an exact science and a tough task. A more cautious approach would likely lead to 3 other bridges closed in Pittsburgh alone. From the 2018 damage you could have made the case for shutting it down then. And it still had 3 more years life in it. I have sympathy for the people who have to make these safety evaluations.

The cables were definitely adding stability. But they did not resist buckling mid way on the legs and they were working at a less effective angle. The road deck seems relatively straight which suggests the legs didnt buckle sideways and it dropped straight down. It may not have been the missing cross brace as the cause and it was the base of the legs that gave in.

That cross brace was corroded right through, and this video did not show the cables that were added in place of the braces, which did not provide the same level of stability that the steel cross members offered. There is a large filter in line on the sample line. The filter would clog up with fly ash and algae and the filter would need to be replaced. The instrument techs didn't like changing that filter so they removed the filter and the filter canister from the line. In their mind they fixed the problem. I used to live by a viaduct that crossed a busy street and whenever I passed underneath the viaduct I'd look up and see daylight through completely rusted out support beams and was horrified. I wondered how it was allowed to carry train traffic. Fortunately the viaduct was rebuilt and no tragedy occurred.

So....... What does this actually explain. I think it simply leads to more speculation. Yes the cross brace snapped, but it was removed and replaced with cabling. Did this have an effect on the structural integrity, or was it a valid repair? Amazing how many people seem to be bridge "experts" after something like this happens.

There wasn't a whole lot holding up that bridge to begin with, and there was very little cross bracing to give it rigidity. The solution to the corroded braces was to remove them? Where's the logic in that? Of course road salt would increase corrosion, and they should have planned for that.

The media does its hysteria dance for a few weeks, then NIST l does its glacially paced thing for who knows how many years, then there's one or two more stores about lawsuits, then nobody except the families directly affected remember or care about it anymore and it's forgotten.

the salt water on the road runs down and the salt water mist created by car tires flinging the tiny droplets and making them airborne drifts and gets on everything in the area. When the salt water gets on the metal it starts to rust. on a hot summer day the water evaporates but the salt precipitates and stays on the rusty metal. The rust gets deep and starts to crack off like skin flakes comming off and the salt is trapped under the salt flakes. basically once the salt is on the metal it sticks to it like a salinated goo unless you pressure wash it numerous times. I know this because I own a salting truck and I see how pesky that salt is to remove. its harder to remove once the rust in on the metal because the rust creates cracks in the surface where the salt can hide. You can wash it a hundred times and there is always a spot that turns white after the water evaporates on a hot day.

From airport straight to Squirrel Hill where we stayed at first and WE ALL FELT WE TIME TRAVELED 200 YEARS BACKWARDS !! RED AND BLACK DIRTY OLD BRICKS CHEAP HOUSES MADE OF WOOD roads are like 50+ years behind Europe,, potholes everywhere, nothing more funny than seeing a Warning road sign saying ROUGH ROAD 😂😂😂 entire PA has rough roads. Still 1700s bricks and stones and railroad tracks underneath just repaved with asphalt. And that Liberty Tunnel they have been repairing it since i moved here and now when you drive in it you feel the car is wobbly and that should be big concern since it feels like the ground has shifted a little but who cares they will fix the ventilation Fans that will take care of moisture and rust that's been building up in the last 100 years. So many bridges but for some reason they refused to connect Hazelwood Ave --- Becks Run Rd Or Forbes Ave with 2nd Ave through (S Neville st, Boundary st, Saline st) Traveling Beechwood Blvd right after Monitor st should be an exit Ramp to Forward ave that way you don't have to loop around through stop signs creating more confusion and traffic. The City is expanding more cars more people and instead of opening up more Lanes they are reducing with bike Lanes 😂

That particular area in P-burgh is full of roads and bridges that are crumbling. It would be difficult for public officials to know which to prioritize for repair/replacement. Couple that with the fact that this area is a haven for social programs and you can see why the money wasn't used for infrastructure in a very long time. Oh, yes, they did some cosmetic repairs here and there such as patching potholes, etc. But a ride on Forbes Ave will reveal quite a bit of open decay in the roadways. The amount of money needed to catch up would be astronomical. There will likely be more collapses in the future.

1. Most people are ignorant of the facts and should keep their uninformed opinions and “conspiracy theories” to themselves. 2. Unfortunately, facts don’t matter any more, which is why the bridge fell down, and why the planet/human race is/are headed for disaster. 3. The fact is, engineers who inspect bridges have been telling the politicians for years that there are problems that need addressed, but the politicians don’t have the courage to do the right thing because it is expensive and unpopular for their supporters. Reread Items 1 and 2, then spend your time holding the politicians responsible for failing to do their jobs. Having said the above, old bridges do get maintained and replaced, but in this case, the process and the politicians failed. Let’s fix the processes and political systems that fail.
