There may not have been as much hype for Pixar’s feature, Elemental, as some of the previous ones, but you’ll find out in this review that, just because Elemental doesn’t have Pixar’s master level of quality, doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth watching or that it’s even close to being bad

Like I said on Twitter, this movie shouldn’t have gotten the BO numbers it has. For Pixar’s first romantic comedy, this is a solid entry. Also so sweet to have Ed Asner’a final appearance as Carl! A fitting tribute to the late actor.

At least Elemental’s reception is the boost that Pixar needs, and word of mouth has been highly positive. And as a bonus, a good chunk of people in my 3D screening even clapped when the movie ended (this was on opening Saturday, for those curious).

I love the animation on the fire, water, and air people, the powers and abilities they have are are very creative, I love how they created an entire fake language for the fire people, the music is awesome, and I like the arc Ember goes through. Plus, it's great to finally see another Disney film where romance is the focus. Overall, not one of Pixar's best, but certainly deserving of more attention than it's currently getting. It's just too bad the marketing for this movie was a total dumpster fire.

I watched this movie in theaters with my big sister and we both loved it! 😊 It’s Adorable, Beautifully Animated, Emotional, Wholesome, And Just Genuinely Fun! 🔥💧🌿☁️ I’m Actually Hoping That Pixar Will Make A Short About Ember And Wades Baby. I think the problem is that a lot of us who grew up on Pixar expects high standards when it comes to their films. I think that's why films like Lightyear, Luca, Onward, Brave, And The Good Dinosaur didn't resonate with some folks. But not every film studio can release winners.

That’s exactly been the problem with these toxic Pixar fanboys. They just want the film to be like the Pixar films of the Golden Era when their Golden Era’s LONG since been over since the beginning of the 2010 decade and there’s been changes the studio’s gone through over the years with the new directors taking over so the quality is going to vary. It’s time to accept that the Golden Era is over and not every future Pixar film is going to be a masterpiece and move on.

I gotta say, I've never been more in love with a Pixar story than I am with Elemental. I'd even put it alongside the golden year greats such as Toy Story 2, Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo, and the Incredibles. I'm not even joking, that's how much I loved this movie. It may surprise many to know that I'm a sucker for animated romance movies, which is my favorite kind of animated movie, and the romance in this film feels like something you'd never expect from Pixar. What the main Walt Disney studio is known for, I feel Pixar did way better in a heartbeat when it comes to the romance department. Despite how cliché the movie is as a rom-com, I feel that the story builds and sets it up so incredibly and realistically. Ember and Wade are officially my most favorite animated movie couple of all time. I've gotta be honest and say that I desperately hope that Elemental gets some kind of Disney channel sequel series, so we can explore more of the evolution of Ember and Wade's relationship, as well as build more of the world even beyond Element City. If that doesn't happen, then I've got a lot of fan fiction to write. Lol.

Crazy thing is I kinda want Elemental to get a sequel or more content (which I doubt it) because there are a lot of potential and interesting ideas for the story to continue forward. I even had an idea for the sequel that both Ember and Wade decide to go back to visit their parents in Element City, but time has changed, and they haven't seen them for so long that they feel a bit disconnected from them and the similar situation can be said for their parent, while they would be a lot more friendly and maybe even visit each other they also a bit distance as well especially with the times changing and society giving them new influences. I even had this idea for villains of the story first starting off as a typical one off random couple but as the story goes on Ember and Wade realize how toxic they are to themselves, their own relatives and others. And once they know their backstory they realize the couple is actually Clod’s parents and they are trying to find Clod, who was taken far away as a baby by a relative or someone in order to escape the abusive relationship. Realizing this, Wade and Ember decided to make sure they never met Clod again.

Also, I really enjoyed the Pixar Short. Despite being confused over Russel's absence (Didn't Carl adopt him at the end of the movie?), I loved the old man being anxious over going on a date for the first time since his wife's death and Dug (best animated doggo ever IMO) trying to encourage him to be himself. If this leads to an actual Up sequel, I'm for it. This kind of short should've been what Coco opened up on, not a Frozen cashgrab. Edit: Nevermind, I realize Russel's mom was shown at the end.

I feel like Elemental succeeding or not will be a lose-lose situation to unless by some miracle it at least breaks even at the box office last minute or does well in its merchandise. If it continues to flop then Disney will double down and use it as an excuse to continue its bad habits and the other way is to be successful when it goes on a steaming service which can have a domino effect for future Pixar films.

Elemental deserves better than this as Pixar's newest film by Pixar veteran Peter Sohn is pretty good and if it wasn't for the poor marketing Disney gave it and the film's released around the same time as Spider man across the spider verse, Transformers ROTB and The Flash with Ezra Miller (Yuck!) Among other things costing it that money it should've of gotten. Pixar can make great things and the film's highlights remind us why they're the best still. Hopefully Elio can be a hit next year with better marketing and in theaters.

Is the film a Pixar classic, not necessarily due to the messy script and side plots. But does it stand well on its own, Yes it does!!! I was so happy to seeing the film in a small theater and it was worth it. The romance angle was adorable to engaging, the animation is visually eye candy, the characters are likable, the voice acting was solid, Thomas Newman returned to provide a great score, and the short "Carl's date" was really touching especially for that Ed Asner tribute. In short, I feel more people should go see it even before the sequels get made again in the next year. 😌😌😌

This movie is unbelievably underrated, with an unjust flop first weekend due to a perfect storm of social media groupthink ('cringe' trailer), jaded critics, and squeezed between Spider-verse and Flash (#1 despite being a bomb). Audience scores and word of mouth are strong, and Elemental might have surprising legs. Even if it doesn't, it's sure to be rediscovered on streaming. One of the freshest Pixars in years, a visual delight, and likeable characters.

I will admit that she looks absolutely 💯 beautiful, cute, adorable, gorgeous, attractive, sexy and very hot! 😘🥰😍🤩 Is it just me does she remind me a bit of Sunset Shimmer from Equestria Girls? She looks like and reminds me so much of Sunset Shimmer from My Little Pony Equestria Girls aka my waifu/crush in terms with the color palettes of red, orange and yellow of a cute, attractive and hot girl who wears black clothing and have fiery personality. She is basically Pixar equivalent to Sunset Shimmer. She's on Sunset Shimmer level cute and hot. I'm getting some Sunset Shimmer vibes with Ember. She could potentially become Pixar's next animated waifu since Helen Parr from the Incredibles. She could potentially become the next Sunset Shimmer in our next generation. The new generation of Sunset Shimmer. Overall, I'm excited and optimistic to see this movie. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️

I went to go see this two days ago, and I'm really happy that I did so. It was such a sweet and touching romance flick. It's nothing original plot wise, but this movie is once again proof that just because something is generic and overdone doesn't automatically equate to total garbage as long as you can tell it in a way that feels unique, or at the very least, if you're not going to do anything new with it, at least tell it in a way that's entertaining, heartfelt, and compelling, and while this is not the most unique concept out there, I felt that it did all the three things I just mentioned. Remember that line from Arthur Christmas when Steve said, "Okay, so I'm not great with children. Does that make me a bad Santa?" Just take that quote and replace it with, "OK, so this is not as good as Across The Spider-Verse or as good as Pixar's other work. Does that make it a bad movie?" I don't think so. I wish this was doing better at the box office. There's just too much competition going on for it to really stand a chance at making its money back. That, and people just got so used to checking out Pixar movies at home since the last three movies before Lightyear's failure at the box office were Disney+ exclusive releases (Soul, Luca, and Turning Red). And to add on to that, the marketing certainly didn't do it any favors since it was not a good representation of how this movie actually is. This is why Pixar needs to move next year's Elio to another time later in the year because if it stays in that March 2024 slot, it's going to get crushed by Kung Fu Panda 4 and Beyond The Spider-Verse, and I fear that if Elio fails financially too, Pixar's going to not only start becoming a sequel factory again, but worst case scenario, they'll start releasing their future original projects as Disney+ exclusives and only putting out their sequels in theaters since franchise movies tend to be the biggest money makers for movie studios. And the scary truth is, Elio has a very good chance of losing Pixar money since sci-fi movies most of the time are not major ticket sellers unless they're big name franchises like Star Wars or Avatar. Don't believe me? Just take a look at Disney's history when releasing their animated sci-fi flicks such as Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, Meet The Robinsons, and Strange World, all of which were a massive financial gamble for them that did not pay off at all. I know you could argue that since WALL-E was a major success financially, Elio could be too, but you got to keep in mind that WALL-E came out during Pixar's golden age when they were releasing hit after hit, but since people don't favor Pixar as much as they used to, moviegoers are more than likely not going to want to risk spending their money on what they perceive as average looking to them from a marketing point of view. And that sucks too because it really shows that people feel so entitled to expect nothing but greatness from Pixar, and the minute Pixar releases something that is just good or just decent instead of great, they write it off as not even worth giving it the time of day. And that's sad because a lot of hard work goes into these movies. I think people need to realize that 1. No studio is perfect, and that goes for Pixar as well, and 2. Just because their marketing is not always great doesn't mean the movie won't be great. But as long as it's good or even decent, what's the problem? Makes me worried for how DreamWorks Animation's Ruby Gillman is going to fare out at the box office as well since not only is it being released the same weekend as Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, but pretty soon after that, audiences are going to be saving their money for Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One. Yet these same people still complain about nothing original coming out of Hollywood nowadays. It's like, hello?! We got Elemental and Ruby Gillman, two original movies not based on previously established properties. Go support them if you want more original content from Pixar and DreamWorks. I plan to go see Elemental a few more times so I can give it as much support as I can. Same goes for Ruby Gillman depending on how that one is, but I've got my fingers crossed that it'll turn out good. Sorry for the long and repetitive comment, but I just needed to get this off my chest.

❤️💖 I am looking forward to see Elemental 😃 this weekend with my family. I do feel sorry and bad for Peter Sohn who previously directed the Good Dinosaur, Pixar's first box office bomb. In real life, Peter Sohn is really nice friendly guy working at Pixar. That isn't Peter Sohn's film. It was mostly blamed for production issues and delays. Just because a director who previously a bad animated film that doesn't mean he or she will direct another bad animated movie. Give it a second chance. Everyone deserves a second chance. You guys aren't the only ones who doesn't like the director's previous film? I feel the same way for Joel Crawford who previously directed Croods 2 A New Age. I personally hated it. It wasn't good as the first film. It was a babysitter filler movie for toddlers. It sucks. Joel Crawford didn't do a good job as a director. He was kinda miscasted. But when I first heard that Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish was announced and Joel was attached to it, I have extreme doubts about this movie 🎬 ever since my first time experience with Joel's direction on the Croods 2 and worst experience with DreamWorks making awful sequel after worse sequel year after year. And I did have doubts if Puss in Boots 2 would be any good and I kinda lost hope for DreamWorks sequels. DreamWorks has now become the new Disney Toon Studios of milking cash grabbing sequels. But when I saw the trailer with Spider Verse animation, I was kinda interested and wanted to give it a chance. I watched Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish both in theaters few months ago and recently now I loved it! ❤️ It was better than I expected. Way better than the first Puss in Boots movie and way better improvement over DreamWorks worse sequels they releases from 2020 to 2021. It brings back the magic and heart from DreamWorks amazing sequels like Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda 2 and How to Train Your Dragon 2 & 3. Joel Crawford did a great job 👏🏻 directing Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish. It wasn't his fault that the Croods 2 sucks. I do believed the reason why the Croods 2 failed but Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish succeed was most likely executive meddling. Don't get me wrong, he is a great guy 👦🏻 but mostly likely I blamed executive meddling behind this. It was the Comcast executives responsible for this because instead of giving filmmakers freedom with their creativity vision and magic, they forced them to make lazy sequels just to make a quick buck and executive meddling are responsible for overused cliches, juvenile humor, cringe pop songs and pop culture references just to be safe towards children. That's why the Croods 2 failed because Joel didn't know he was doing as his first time experience as a director and the executives just announced the revival of the sequel as a last minute decision. 😳 But luckily when Joel learned from his mistakes and later got the hang to direct a another movie he would have creative freedom to make Puss in Boots 2 a much better movie. 😉 I give Joel Crawford a second chance and people should give Peter Sohn a second chance too. What am I trying to say just give Elemental a second chance. You will never know that Peter Sohn might suprised you and it could be an improvement than the Good Dinosaur. Everyone deserves a second chance. I do feel bad for Pixar when they are struggling money and layoffs after the disappointment with Lightyear. I hoped things will get better. Heck, I would rather pay money 💲 💶 to see Elemental in the big screen more than the Flashbutt movie anyday! 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️

Loved your essay LOL I didn’t think Good Dinosaur was that bad though, though it definitely got darker and more serious than I thought I would. Speaking of executive meddling, a prime example of great potential turning out bad was Alien 3 from 1992. Following two great classics, we get a horrible downgrade of what came before and have to suffer watching the main characters get killed off in the first five minutes and the main one at the end. And are replaced by unlikable and empty characters. There is an Assembly Cut edition of the film that is a minuscule improvement but it’s not much better It’s even worse when you realize David Fincher directed it, who thankfully later redeemed himself with Fight Club (1999), Zodiac (2007) and The Social Network (2010) . Fincher has since disowned Alien 3 as well

You're review is spot on. It is not the best, but it is very good. Unlike Lightyear, which had stock or boring characters and a not pleasant to look at environment, this one has engaging characters and such a beautiful environment to look at. I like how there is no real villain here, as the conflict is not only in the characters themselves, but also the bad situation and their community. The voices really bring these characters to life. Also, the deuce ex machina at the end really got me at the edge of my seat. The climax it self is breathtaking. It had an average opening at the box office, but let's see where Word of Mouth will take it. It was number one on Thursday and The Flash is falling off the map. Let's see how it does in it's sophomore weekend.

I feel bad that this is the second animated film directed by Peter Sohn that’s not doing well at the box-office, especially since this one is a film coming entirely from his head and inspired from a personal story of his related to what happened with his parents unlike with The Goof Dinosaur where he was just thrust into the director position to hastily patch up that film’s production issues. And I really don’t like that there are some in the comment section in other videos relating to Elemental that are saying he deserves to be fired just because of directing both The Good Dinosaur and this. And I agree with Alexis Martinez, Jr. that just because a director directed one box office bomb doesn’t give you the excuse to hate the director. Really shows the toxic mentality of the Pixar fanboys. And one more thing I also want to call out the toxic Pixar fanboys…. COULD YOU PLEASE STOP USING THIS FILM AND THE OTHER PIXAR FILMS SO FAR RELEASED THIS DECADE LIKE ONWARD, LUCA, TURNING RED & LIGHTYEAR AS EXAMPLES OF PIXAR LOSING THEIR SPARK AND CONTRIBUTING IT TO JOHN LASSETER’S FIRING?!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if Disney were to magically forgive John Lasseter’s sexual misconduct and give him his old job back at Disney and Pixar as Chief Creative Officer, it would not fix the current financial problem with Pixar’s films or even the frigging quality! “I’m surrounded by a**holes!” - Dark Helmet.

I cannot get over how well this film was done... it's absolutely beautiful, and deserves way more love than it's getting. I'm hoping this thing is a sleeper hit, but I guess we'll see how everything plays out. I loved it! I loved how the 4 elements weren't used to represent race, but rather the 4 Elements of Spirituality... which ties in amazingly with the premise of Soul and Inside Out. Key note though... the plot of this film is "Make Connections" ... it's an emotional/psychological plot... not physical. For whatever reason, people don't appreciate such an emotionally driven primary plot, once the budget exceeds $50 million... and I just don't understand it. People will watch a film like this, or Thor, or Man of Steel, and be like "nothing happened!!!" ...while I'm basically crying. For as complicated and abstract as people claim to be, I find it quite ironic that an emotionally driven film will go right over their heads, if it doesn't have some over-arcing physical plot device... be it a race, a battle, a road-trip, or whatever... literally anything... I just don't understand it. Wade and Ember are incredible, and are exactly how one should write an empathetic male-character, and a strong female character. This film showcases connections and relationship fundamentals, just beautifully. Wade was raised on unconditional love and support, for everything he did... he never experienced anything that had repercussions of any kind. It didn't matter what career he pursued, or if he succeeded or failed... or even ran away... his family was always overjoyed for him. He'd never had a real, genuine experience in his life. Cue Ember. Ember had loving, supportive parents, and while they weren't Turning Red overbearing... the circumstances of their existence cast a massive shadow over Ember... I mean, they left everything they knew behind... opened a store... and literally founded a community. Everything Ember does, is her trying to uphold her families legacy... but she lacks communication skills because of it. Due to the inherent self-sufficiency of her father, and the sacrifices they made, she imposes upon herself this burden which cannot be repaid, and becomes so ashamed that she cannot bring herself to tell her parents anything... she believes she's a complete and total failure as a result, even though her parents never imposed such expectations on her. Then she meets Wade, and together they fill the voids in each-other's lives. Ember is the genuine experience Wade has been longing for. He's probably never had anybody talk to him the way Ember did... never had to deal with the situations Ember presented... never had to actually reconcile with repercussions for anything... and he found it... Ember showed him that. Meanwhile Wade shows Ember the world... shows her how to live... teaches her how to connect with others. These are very simple concepts that are executed so beautifully... and the final realization.. the resolution reached by Ember isn't a "It's my life, dad!!!" ... no... it's that she finally communicated and connected genuinely with her parents, with her father... she proved to herself that she was worthy of their legacy... her parents realized the grave miscommunication and burdens they unintentionally imposed on her... and they become whole. They aren't the biggest, most in-your-face arcs... but my goodness if they aren't beautiful. It's not perfect... a solid 8/10... but I'd put this film in my top 5 Pixar films... and I agree completely with you... I'll support Pixar making original content, exclusively in theaters, as much as I possibly can, because they absolutely deserve it. I know for certain that if Elemental, Elio, and Wish bomb at the box office... we can kiss new original films goodbye for the next 15 years. Awesome video, take care my friend!

Speaking of John Lasseter, may I suggest one day making one of your editorials about his reputation and how it was shattered by his own creep factor. I actually kinda miss your editorials, personally. They showed your historical side in a sense that only your Animation Lookback series can really compare to. Plus it gets to see how insane the animation industry can really get.

Mat did lightly touch on that in the editorial on Disney sequels, but I agree. Also, maybe a rise and fall editorial on Butch Hartman.

Just saw the movie and I get where you're coming from. Building a unique world while also telling an engaging story is a difficult balancing act as focusing on one over the other often leads to a disjointed mess. With Elemental, though, I think they struck a nice balance of the two by having the world building be shown through scenes of Ember making deliveries and chasing Wade as opposed to it being explained with long, boring exposition. Great review Mat 👍

Can’t wait to see this soon. Does look lots of fun and so sweet. I agree with you’re points at the end. Like u said, amazing or not, it’ll still be an enjoyable time. Plus we must make sure to make originality back in action at the box office. Even if it’s now one of the under appreciated Pixar films, I will say that at the very least, it could’ve been worse. We’re looking at you Cars 2

@@RB01.10 While I may open to the newly planned animated Disney sequels (with complex reasons btw), I’d love to see more originals coming out of them. The future animated Disney films, original or not will be unpredictable. Hope we’ll get an updated release list soon. For the remakes, maybe it’s possible that we’ll see less and less if the later remakes cause the trend to not be profitable like they used to. Heard that Little Mermaid (2023) is doing okay but not great at the box office. Speaking of sequels, Zootopia 2 sounds exciting and cool but it’ll be a challenge for it to match the standards of the first. Don’t get me wrong. I do see potential in it too. Since Inside Out 2 comes out next year, are u familiar on what it will be about? They said Riley will be a teenager and she’ll gain new emotions

The reason I like this movie is simple. It’s been a really fast ride in Animation recently. Puss In Boots 2 was great, but people were constantly, unfairly comparing it to Disney. The Super Mario Bros. Movie became the highest grossing animated film of all time. Across The Spiderverse was instantly called one of the best animated films ever let loose on God’s green earth. This chill movie was the break I needed from all of this.

After watching this movie, I can say for sure that while this may not be one of my favorite Pixar films, this movie is still good, I was emotionally invested in the romance of Ember and Wade and really enjoyed the immigration side of the film as well. Sure the film has flaws and takes a bit to get into where the film really gets good, but its definitely a solid film. Its the kinda film that warms your heart, tears you up, and puts a stupid grin on your face. Overall, its an 8/10 film for me, and considering the positive word of mouth has managed to get the film's box office to pass the Lightyear mark, I think that goes to show that people still believe in Pixar despite all the backlash they have gotten in recent years, which as a huge Pixar fan really makes me proud. Let's keep the Elemental box office train full steam ahead, Pixarians!

Story: 10/10 Animation: 1000/10 Characters: 1 quintillion/10 Total: BEST FILM EVER!!!/10 In my honest opinion, Elemental is the best movie ever made. I will not leave any spoilers for those who haven't watched it, just know that you should when it comes to *NOT Prime Video.* That's how spectacular it is. This movie feels less like it was crafted by actual people and more like it was given to us by the gods... I have little to no jokes to tell you here because it would ruin the whole vibe of my comment. This movie is too good even for Pixar! Still, Disney and Pixar make really good flicks, but Pixar had it in them to probably make something so spectacular that it deserves the Leonhardt Seal of Godlike.

All the bashing on KZfaq actually spurred me to go see it for myself, and I really enjoyed it! It's GORGEOUS to look at, VERY well-animated, and the love story and father-mother-daughter relationship was handled very well. I could tear apart the logic of some of the themes and world building, but, honestly, I could do the same with ALL of Pixar's films.

Honestly I'm getting real tired of people using the same excuse for why they don't wanna see this movie. Now this isn't everyone and you guys are entitled to ur opinions so we gotta agree to disagree. But I feel like everyone is complaining about the movie for the same reason to the point where it feels like their critiques are unjustified 👀 Yes it's not a perfect movie but let's not act like Pixar is perfect(looking at you Good Dinosaur) like how is it that something like Dreamworks can mess up and people excuse it saying "You can do better!" But than Pixar or Disney messes up and it's like they're as bad as Anti Woke People or Republicans 👀

You know what’s sad? If This movie was made by ANY OTHER STUDIO But The Story, The Characters, Everything Being Exactly The Same… Everyone Would Have LOVED It. People Only Hate It/Are Avoiding It Just Because it’s Disney. 😑 Witch I think is a stupid reason to hate a movie just because of the studio.

Also, some new bizarre lands I’d like to see from Pixar is an African Savannah, a deep jungle ala Central, or Western Africa, or South America and Indonesia, an Arctic or Antarctic wasteland, Ancient Egypt, a dystopian city full of killer robots or zombies, a world of ancient mammals outside of the Ice Age, A steampunk version of Victorian London, or possibly the Welsh Valleys with a talking Welsh Dragon, or a Welsh Dragon steed. How about that?

These two communities would make a good universe for a film. I call it ‘North and South’, or ‘Polar Opposites’. Maybe have David Attenborough, or an impressionist of him, narrate it as a parody.

I saw this in theaters on Thursday, and overall I certainly enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Yes, it’s basically a typical boy meets girl story we’ve seen doxens of times before, and Zootopia already handled a similar concept but way better. But not only is the love story aspect actually incredibly effective, but I found Ember’s story of trying to find her own purpose in the world instead of just feeling obligated to carry on her parent’s tradition to be very strong and relatable. Also, the animation is incredibly gorgeous and really makes use of the elements’s abilities to create some truly breathtaking and stunning VFX. So despite the issues with the story that AniMat mentioned, if there’s one aspect they absolutely nailed, which’s par from the course with Pixar, it’s by far the animation. The marketing really does this movie no favors, since it doesn’t really show any of these actually interesting aspects the story delves into and just focuses on the “elements don’t mix” part. Which is an important part of the plot, but it isn’t the *only* part, and it’s a large shame that this movie is bombing at the BO as a result since it truly doesn’t deserve to. Hopefully it has the same affect as Encanto where despite not making much money in theaters, it got a huge second lease on life once it inevitably hits Disney+. Which I imagine plenty of people are waiting to watch it on instead.
