This is my tribute to Toys R Us. To be honest, I'm quite heartbroken over this news. Rather than doing a video talking about what happened and debating on why it happened, I wanted to focus my energy on creating something that I could look back on and remember what it meant to me and my family. I hope you get something from this as well.

You said it Brother....I didn't think much of how sad this was until watching this video. It's like losing an old childhood pal. I have fond memories as a young kid with my Pop taking us there getting a NHL Hockey table, Atari 2600 Jr., and of course our first Nintendo. All we had to do was do good in school, do our chores and he would take us there when he had the funds to treat us. Will miss this place.

Yeah I know, that's how I feel too...most will say "oh it's just a store" but to some of us it was a huge part of our childhood..I understand things change and life goes on,but still....at least we will all have lovely memories of going to our local Toys R Us and the sense of wonder at seeing all those toys :)

Beautiful video, Dan. The closing of TRU really hits me hard man. This video got me choked up. Poor Emma won’t ever remember visiting Toys R Us, Spencer is lucky to have these experiences and memories with you guys.

TRU closing is hitting me WAAAAAAAY harder than I expected. It's almost like losing an old family pet who you only get to see when you visit your parents, but the pet has been around for literally your ENTIRE life. I keep getting hit by all sorts of REALLY specific memories that I had forgotten about until now. And, honestly, my current TRU isn't even my original one. The old one was across the freeway until the roof got torn off by a hurricane. THAT'S where all my memories are really from. So I already kind of lost MY TRU once before, and now I'm losing the replacement. ....but somehow that doesn't seem to be softening the blow. The old TRU still sits there, empty and abandoned, like a portent of what the new TRU across the freeway from it may be destined to become..... I just went to TRU this morning and wandered around the whole store. Bittersweet seeing all the kids having fun running around and playing with stuff.... They don't even realize what they're losing, and I can only hope they remember it....

Toys R Us was like my Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, incarnate... As soon as those sliding doors opened, and my face was hit with the rushing coolness of the air conditioning, it never failed me; I was always awestruck. Even into early adulthood, I would all but hear 'Come with me, and you'll be, in a world of pure imagination' every single time I stopped in. As the years went on, and my car at the time died, the one and only reachable TRU became unreachable, and I never procured the means to get back to it. If I'd still had steady transportation, I honestly believe I'd have been shopping there every month, to this day. It's really sad that this light of childhood nostalgia in particular, has gone out.

Very well done tribute. Every Saturday when I was a kid, would wake up to watch cartoons while eating breakfast & close to noon my parents would take me to the city to buy me a wave of TMNT figs, other toylines or video games. We then would eat somewhere & I would play with the toys on our way home. That feeling of going to the toy store will always be one of my favorite memories.

Great video tribute Dan! Growing up for me and my brothers was hard, being that we came into the United States in the mid ninies and growing up going to ToysRus was an amazing dream come true for us. Seeing all those toys and video games put us in Aww, getting some toys or games was the greatest thing our parents ever did for us aside from everything else they did for us.

As an adult collector who never let go of his childhood, this really saddens me. When I was finally old enough to work, I put my application in at Toys R Us and nowhere else. Some of my fondest memories were picking up the original NES with my mom or stopping after school to look at the GI Joe selection. I can still remember the day I picked up Beach Head for $2.85. Wow, I miss those prices. After church on Sundays, my brother and I used to jump in his car and go toy hunting. He was 18 and I was only 14 but we both shared the same hobby. We both also went to TRU when they did the midnight release of all the figures from The Phantom Menace. That night was so much fun that I still refuse to part with my 12 inch Qui Gon, Jar Jar and Darth Maul. I have seen some people posting "Get over it!". Honestly, I don't want to nor do I have to. It was never just a store. It is a destination and one that provides me with so many fond memories.

The rise of electronics and parents' dependence on a computer screen to tingle their children's imaginations is at fault, but Toys R Us's crappy business practices didn't help either. Their website, from everything I've read, was a nightmare to shop at (missing orders, hideous refund accommodation, horrid customer service), as well as their lack of innovation over the span of 20 to 30 years, which basically consisted of only different-colored employee t-shirts and the sale of adult collectibles (which NEVER saw decent sales as other items did). Their removal of a live Geoffrey mascot and strive to a far more corporate and less family-friendly presentation took away the heart and soul of the place's orginal identity... but if it's just an extra, and we can save money by NOT having it, let's just better get rid of it, right? To hell with thinking in the long term or striving to do ANYTHING different than the competition. Let's not also forget the general lazy and apathetic attitude of today's young employee, who thinks they all deserve to be making $30/hour to stock toys and broom a floor. Toys R Us is a victim of the times, corporate greed being the biggest symptom at the very top. So tragic, but thus are our modern times.

I wouldn’t say that they weren’t innovative. I mean how innovative can you get with selling a toy on a shelf. Innovative was being the only store for kids filled with toys. How did Walmart or target or amazon create anything innovative than toys r us. I agree they were a little high on certain exclusive toys but it was exclusively them. It didn’t matter over a few dollars. It was killed due to a major recession that is still now starting to come back. Other big box stores and amazon had other products to sell. Toys r us was just toys. In All kids need a place for them to go to like this. Hopefully it is true that KB Toys is trying to return to the market.

Thank you very much for sharing this with us. I'm glad you and your family will have this footage to look back on. There is something quite sad in knowing that children will no longer have a giant room full of toys to enter like we did. I take some comfort in knowing they can at least have a similar experience in the toy sections of other stores, but it's not the same. Still, we can hope that the future will bring us other wonderful things to share with children. Best.

We all need to channel the "inner child" in all of us-that very small part of us that is a reminder when we didn't have a care in the world except playing with toys and was left behind when we became adults. That was a great, heart felt video. I feel TRU had its problems because their weren't enough people like you using the store the way it was meant for. It's such a shame you are losing a staple of our childhood. Thanks Toys R Us for every single memory.

Thanks for the video- my son is 13, and this brought back some great memories of Saturday mornings when he was little going to the toy store and picking out some toys... how excited he would get when we got to his favorite aisle; then going home to play with “our” new stuff.

This is a fantastic video! I'm really sad that this store is closing down. I have so many fond memories of going there when I was a kid in Long Beach California. I unfortunately will not be able to visit one before they all disappear. I forever will always be a Toys R Us kid.

Amazing video Dan, it did get me emotional. I will never forget my first time in Toys R us, visiting England when I was around 7 years old, and buying some Ghost Busters figures with my elder brother. Since then, i've been a thousand times, most recently buying things for my little niece.

It’s been difficult to wrap my head around. I don’t have children of my own, but that’s never stopped me from stopping by a TRU and just browsing the aisles- reliving old memories while checking out some of the amazing new stuff that’s been created for this generation of kids. (I’m kinda jealous.) I was down was Kay-Bee tanked, too. It’s sad because the lack of dedicated toy stores means fewer places for kids to go to just be themselves. Toy shopping at Walmart or Target just isn’t the same thing. Thanks for putting this together.

Lovely video. I live in the UK and when they announced they're all closing down over here I was gutted. The Toys R us near me was like Disney world to me as a kid, I remember when it first opened and I went there with my parents for the first time. The place seem gigantic. Too large for my little 6 year old mind to comprehend. I honestly though it would take a whole day to see everything in the store. The fact that this massive place was completely packed with toys was like some kind of dream. I've never let go of that feeling for the place and it really sucks that its shutting down.

Been following you for some time now (mostly the MOTUC stuff). Thanks for all the good information! This one is different, this one really get me like that 'punch in the stomach' kind of feeling. Not being from US, I don't have that connection to Toys R Us, but it makes me remember when my childhood toy store closed. Luckily there is now another one around where I can bring my kid, once she's big enough to appreciate it. Keep up the good work and the fight for the right to play, Dan!

Awesome video, +PixelDan! My earliest memories of ToysRus are looking at an entire planogram aisle of Military Micro Machines and the city Micro Machines. Eventually they would carry the Trendmasters Godzilla toys, and even then, I always felt both toylines should have been facing one another rather than being a couple of aisles apart. ToysRus was always more expensive than anywhere else, but they always more than enough stock for their customers. Whenever my parents took me ToysRus it felt like Christmas, and I will always cherish those memories. The last decade or so, they've had less stock than everywhere else, so you had to be quick on those street dates for certain toys. It's so sad. I will miss them, terribly. =(

Very well done, Dan. You articulated what Toys R Us means to people like us beautifully. While I am very sad, I am also very grateful that we got to experience what was literally the greatest place on Earth. The experience of getting that birthday or Christmas money and walking in and being able to buy whatever you wanted, is one of my greatest memories as a kid. I will truly miss the stores, the catalogs, the commercials, etc. Thanks for the video!

"There's a magical place, we're on our way there" For someone who never set foot inside a TRU shop as it was a 45 mile travel to get to the nearest 1, I still remember that jingle and when you heard those words on TV you knew that Geoffrey was about to appear on screen. Whether you visited the TRU shop or whether you heard the advert, you were a toys r us kid. It is a shame it has come to this for them but I wish the people, workers and customers, well. Adios Toys R Us.

I've been holding off watching this video because I just knew it would make me cry. I've been going often lately making my wife walk through it with me and she says "I wish I could still play with Barbie and all the cool accessories that come with the line but were adults now and people judge" I said let them judge you can play with whatever you want, just because we grew up doesn't mean we can't still enjoy the little things that make us happy, she smiled and starting looking up cool things to buy. Thank you Toys R Us for this and so many other memories! And thank you Dan for making this and letting us know that it's ok to be a child at heart!

Loved it, Dan. Took my own 4 year old the other day as well, but it was crazy packed as always. It's harder when you see a store thriving in your community, but overall doing bad as a corporation. Great video, would love to go back and film before it all goes away, hoping I have a chance to.
