I bought a basic light meter. It helps a lot. I really liked your work discipline phrase. Accomplishing something is not that important, what holds more importance is how you do it, your approach. There is so much to learn and learned individuals like you who are ready to share their knowledge and experiences are a blessing. Regards.

Such great advice! I bought two light meters that I walked around with before I ever got a DSLR, and still have more meters (3) than camera bodies (2). When you meter, and therefore know, the ratios between lights and shadows you can begin to collect recipes and then accurately REPEAT them again in the future. It sure beats guessing all over again each and every time. I know so many people that want to just look at their LCD screen or tethered screen and then just guess their way to a pleasing picture. What I say is this, lighting ratios do EXIST whether you want to acknowledge their existence or not. It is like gravity. You may not want to acknowledge gravity, but it DOES exist. If you do not think so then just.... jump. And then see what happens. So with lighting ratios, they always exist. Why not then make use of instruments to record those ratios so that you know what they are? Why not? They are there. Record them so that you can repeat them. Oh, well. Some people are just not interested, I guess. If you ever want to send your "old" 758 meter to a good home.... I know an address. :-)

I have used a meter for 6 years now and it is helpful just to get the understanding of how much light is coming from a certain direction. If you got reflectors which can't be moved, it gives by time a better view of the situation and what to do. Learning by doing is the only way to get the tech in place. Then, you can focus on the real work - the photo.

Do you need a flash meter? Well the question should be do you need eyes to see? Flash meter is a photographer's eye by which they starts capturing the world as per their visualization. Informative video for those who struggle why their images do not have that punch as compared to selected few whom they idealize.

it’s not hard. Mainly you need to meter for your subject and lock it down in camera for that reading. The rest is just filling in additional lights for fill or highlights. Fill lights will mostly be a stop down or two from your main reading depending how dark you want your shadows to be. Your highlights will always be a 1-2 stops higher than your main reading. that’s all.

You can use a lot more cheaper gear with almost the same efficiency. Buy a some YongNuo flashlights, some lightstands, some umbrellas and you're in. As a flashmeter you don't need the latest and fancy 858-series. For incident light/flashlight metering you will be satisfied with much cheaper 308-series model from Sekonic.

I once again watched this tutorial today, as I was in confusion of the proper technique to use the Sekonic Flsh Meter to adjust three lights exposure. Lot of my confusion is clarified theoretically sir....going to put it into practice tomorrow . One issue that is still hunting my mind is that in Elinchrom FRX 400, the light intensity can be reduced only up to 2.0, now if my Key Light is already in 2.0 and with Portalite Softbox installed....how do I reduce the Fill Light intensity below 2.0 ( considered that the Fill Light is fit with a Beauty Dish Reflector , Mini Cap Diffuser Cloth and Deflector fitted in it) ? Next querry is that exactly at what angle and distance did you place the Key and Fill Light in this video tutorial shooting ?

Anoop Sundaran it vastly depends on the choice of our lenses, the exposure, the aperture, the ambient light and the color temperature of the light source. Before shooting make sure you either cut the ambient light or shoot at an aperture that doesn't expose for the ambient. I prefer f8. None of the lights i own have the microfarads to go beyond f8. I forgot to mention, do not shoot next to coloured walls as those colors will bleed on to your subject.

Hello from land of Yousuf Karsh -Canada. I must compliment on you making these video tutorials, you are indeed a natural teacher and very talented, I admire how you are able to remove the chaff from real stuff. Do you have a photography school ? Anyway you have earned my subscription in no time , look forward to more interesting tutorials. I do have a naive question. In your given scenario if ISO and Shutter Speed are constant (and so is the distance of Key /Fill light) and if your Key light gives you F11 for proper exposure, then for Fill if the reading is F5.6 ....you have basically opened the aperture 2 stops, which means 4 times more light is being allowed, then wont the Fill side be now overexposed. What am I missing and misunderstanding ? God Bless....Thank You

Use the same aperture, as the lights are lighting the subject, not the camera. If the distance between your lights and the subject changes, then the aperture must also change.
