One big difference, you can start doing USMLE while you're in med school. Also salary and opportunities are much better in USA. The amount of money and time you invest in USMLE tests is definitely paying off really quickly.

That is true :) Yeah, I thought that long term wise, US might indeed be a better option. But it also depends on what kind of life you aim for for your future.

Very well said. But i believe the first thing that needs to be decided is where do you want to live. If you feel that US is your place the you should strive for that. I personally always wanted to work in the UK that why I did the PLAB exam

Yes but just because US option offers more money doesn’t mean it is the better choice. You should choose where you feel you are happier. I personally don’t like US and don’t have much family. I prefer europe. Nicer healthier lifestyle for me.

Hi Sarang, I read about something called “attending bottleneck” meaning that its much harder to find an attending job after your specialty training in the UK so many people are stuck at training level jobs. Is this true/what do you think about this?

There is some truth to this but this ‘attending (consultant) bottleneck’ you’re referring to typically applies only for select hyper competitive specialties such as Neurosurgery and Cardiothroacic Surgery which are fields in which there are many many more applicants and trainees than number of available attending positions and there is also a lack of current attending doctors in these specialties wanting to retire. Because there is typically a lower demand for services in heart and brain surgery the government doesn’t have an incentive to fund new training or consultant positions hence there is a bottleneck there. Most other specialties are not like this at all, and you’ll likely be able to obtain a consultant post after completing your training years and applying for a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training).

Hello, I recently took the Nov 2020 PLE and am planning to take the PLAB next year. They say that the 1700 MCQs might not be really of big help as the exams have change. Have you tried taking PLAB 1? And what other high-yield study materials could you recommend?

You get paid once you are hired and start working in any of the NHS hospitals :)

@@DocTraderPH faster training progression, better salary, lower taxes, focuses teaching sessions during your career as you progress and more direct training routes plus the ability to expand yourself as a clinician due to the medical field being private.

@@HassanPoyo Sounds promising, however regarding the salary an FY2 doctor told me this "Sorry to say but this is very misleading in terms of uk salary. You haven't done your homework clearly. 28000 pounds is BASIC salary for 1st year intern, this is only for a 8hrs/day 5 days a week. Nobody does that. All doctors have oncalls nights weekends for which they get about 40 42000 pounds. For 2nd year intern, it goes up to 47 to 50000 pounds(my case). This is the case for resident also who get 60 to 70000 pounds. US residents work 80 to 100 hours a week. UK is 40 to 60 hours max. The only difference is when you are a specialist, where US is higher than uk. Even then I won't advise anyone to go for US. Many have left US to come to UK." Regarding the training progression, its about the same since you have to wait 2 or more yrs to finish the step exams in US unlike in UK wherein you can start immediately. Plus the match is way harder in US

@@DocTraderPH over the span of my career I will be better off financially in the US. I already know that the basic salary is the bare minimum, I constantly speak to doctors on hospital wards (im placed on hospital rotations right now). The US training progression to become Attending is around 3 years. Im also sitting all my step exams in my 3rd and 4th year of medical school in the UK so the 2 year wait (which ive never heard of anyway) won’t apply to me as im still completing my education here. Matching is harder but nothing in medicine is easy, as long as I score above average on my STEP exams and complete an internship, get references and publish one or two research papers I have a really good chance of matching in my chosen specialty in a nice area.

They have labor law, which doesn't allow them to be overworked. Many of my school's alumni are there (one of them a close friend) and all of them are satisfied being a doctor in the UK. :) they even have paid vacations.

@@allypolicarpio3537 Hi! You won't be restricted to being a GP. You can choose your preferred specialty. My previous roommate is currently in vascular surgery for instance. Once you're in a training job, you work for roughly 8 to 10 years and then you become a consultant. But that also depends on your specialty and also on how early you start your training job. Only if you are ready and confident you'll pass and get a good score. Never take it if there are chances you'll fail. It doesn't reflect well for matching in the future.
