How to Conjugate and Use 12 Irregular Verbs in the Past Tense in Brazilian Portuguese

PAST TENSE IN BRASILIAN PORTUGUESE - In today's lesson, you will learn how to conjugate 12 of the most common irregular verbs in the past - 'PRETÉRITO PERFEITO'. Because we will be working with a lot of different verbs, I strongly recommend that you pause the video from time to time to repeat my examples out loud. It is also a good idea that, as additional practice, you create your own sentences. Feel free to share a few of them with me!!

Another awesome lesson Bea!! Your conjugation tables are gold. I have a book on Portuguese grammar and it doesn't have all the irregular verb conjugation tables, just some of them. Was looking for a good set of tables and I actually asked ChatGPT for the past tense conjugation tables and it messed up quite a few of them (it mixes up the tenses a little) -- should have gone here first -- your stuff is the best! Plus, your pronunciation of them is "Gold" as well -- I realized I had been pronouncing "foi" wrong by watching your video. Muito, Muito Obrigado Bea!!

Ok here goes my story. Eu entrei o U.S. Guarda Costa em 1987. Eu fui 18 anos. Eu fis vente cinco anos no servico ativo. Em 1989 eu casei minha primera esposa em Miami, Fl. Meu trabalho com a guarda costa fis para muito viajem. Eu fui do Bahamas sempre dois semanas paro o trabalho de barco. Eu ainda tenho muitos amigos Brasileiro em Miami.@@PlainPortuguese

In the previous lesson about regular verbs ending in ER, ler was an example. But in this video you say that ler is an irregular verb. Can you explain the reason? Thank you for the amazing videos you put up for us!

Olá! Tudo bem? Verbs in Portuguese are either regular or irregular. Regular verbs will always follow specific conjugation patterns. Irregular verbs may have completly different conjugations from regular verbs, or, sometimes, follow some conjugation patterns. 'Ler' is considered irregular because it doesn't follow the -ER conjugation pattern for the Present Indicative, Present Subjunctive, Imperative.

Can I use Gente with the past tense of ter and the other irregular verbs in past tense. For example could I say "We had good weather" using "Gente tenia bom clima*

Olá! Tudo bem? Thanks for the kind words! 😊 1. In Portuguese, the words 'gente' and 'a gente' are used with different purposes. 'Gente' means people. For example, 'I met a lot of people' - 'Conheci muita gente'. 'A gente' and 'nós' mean 'we', but 'a gente' is way more informal than 'nós'. 'A gente' means 'nós', but takes the 3rd person singular conjugation, regardless of the verb tense (present, past, future, conditional you name it.). For example 'We visited Brazil' - 'Nós visitamos o Brasil' x 'A gente visitou o Brasil'. The sentence 'We had good weather' doesn't sound natural in Portuguese if translated literally. We would say, 'Fez tempo bom' (We had good weather), instead.

Having the example sentences is also fantastic! I appreciate seeing all the sentences posted as you add them because you also add in examples of plurals or gender examples. Outro video excelente, obrigada Bea. Eu tenho uma pergunta, por favor. Com seus videos, eu aprendi que existem duas maneiras de dizer isso: "Have you been to....?" Voce conhece o Brasil? Voce ja teve no Brasil? Which way is more common? or more natural for Brazilians/Portuguese? (Eu visito o brasil e portugal, and I know they speak Portuguese slightly differently)

Oi Sylvia! Obrigada por sempre participar! I would say that both 'Você conhece o Brasil?' and 'Você já teve no Brasil?' mean 'Have you been to Brazil?', and are just as common. Now, if you want to know if a person has been to a place and knows how to get around, I suggest using 'Você conhece o Brasil?' (Do you know Brazil?) 😊

Professora Bea, are commas used the same way in Portuguese as they’re used in English? I’m sure there are some differences. Have you made a video about this? I have been trying to research it

Olá! Tudo bem? I haven't made a video on that , but it is a good idea! 😊 One of the biggest differences regarding commas is that Portuguese doesn't have what you call in English *Oxford Comma* , a comma used after the penultimate item in a list of three or more items, before *and* or *or* . The sentence "I spoke to the girls, Lisa, and Michelle" in Portuguese would be "Falei com as meninas, Lisa e Michelle." I dare say that, in this case, to avoid ambiguity, we end up repeating a few structures, such as "Falei com as meninas, com a Lisa e com a Michelle."

@@PlainPortuguese Obrigado mas estou ainda nao entendo. 😅 A congutação regular para o pretérito "er" é Eu - eu voce/ele/ela/a gente "eu" nos emos voces/eles/elas eram é isso que a conjugação de ler também é, mas você a coloca como uma conjugação de verbo irregular. por exemplo Eu - comi/li voce/ele/ela/a gente comeu/leu Nos comemos/lemos voces/eles/elsas comeran/leram Comer é uma conjugação de verbo regular no passado e ler tem a mesma conjugação, então como isso é irregular? Obrigado. ☺

@@pragmaticliving9420 Ah! Agora entendi a sua pergunta! Um verbo é considerado irregular em português quando não segue a conjugação esperada em qualquer tempo verbal. O verbo 'LER', mesmo tendo a mesma conjugação dos verbos regulares no pretérito perfeito, é considerado um verbo irregular por causa dos outros tempos verbais em que não segue as regras😊
