I always liked the idea of an evil offshoot of a myconid that has several castes of myconids with varying abilities. Start with the superorganisms, each around a mile in diameter allowing telepathy when in connection with other myconids and teleportation nodes where other yconida can enter, disassemble, reassemble, and exit another node, and can function like a myconid cloning facility. Then the Royals, think mentalityand abilities of a mindflayer. Then Soldiers, myconid/shambling mound stat hybrid. Poisoners, like sorcerers only all poison/spore related. The Birther, little shop of horrors plant and myconid familial anchorpoint. Viceroys, humanoid simulacra, used to accomplish tasks away from the colony, rogues with a persistent infection ability based on fungi spreading from system to system if infected by a viceroy. Finally, Grunts, basic myconid with some trippy drug auras. Have the discovery of a Viceroy in a pub fight after its subsequent death confuse and startle the village lead in the story.

So In my world there is a cursed forest called "The Greywood" it has an old fey curse to where at night and during the winter the forest turns to stone. well the party manage to piss off a dryad and a fight ensued a few treants jumped in and called for back up. These treants in winter and night time have the stoneskin effect as well are immune to non magic damage and no weakness to fire. The party pissed off the forest during the winter and were nearly tpk'd

1st. If people think plant monsters are silly they need to watch the original Night of the Triffids and The Ruins. This episode was so helpfull for me. I'm currently running a campaign with a ranger who has plants as her favoured enemy. It is this world where the regular pantheon is switched with 12 essential spirits of natural concepts, these 12 spirits all represent their own parallel planes of existence. Their energy sporadically seeps into the prime material plane, so there are plenty of these plant monsters around.

In our current campaign, we also visited this one dwarven city that had a church which offered auguries to people by means of a blood drinking fungus. Naturally, we found out that alhoons had infiltrated both the church and the city's mage college and had the mage college experiment with fusing the fugnus with sentient humanoids. When we fought the alhoon in the college, we avoided most of the college and went straight for the alhoon, but we did find out that every single mage had been turned into a mumbling, walking mushroom

Apparently, Jim was a Cheer Squad Leader at one point, based off that ending bit. :P But seriously, loved the video, as always, and it really helped inspire me to work on expanding my setting even more. Might have to make a quest where the PCs have to track down someone in the "Dream World" by "expanding their minds." You get it? Huh? Yeah, you get what I'm talking about. Yeah... Drugs! I was talking about Drugs!

Two things. 1) With the Awakened forest you mentioned towards the end (Honey badger but) part of me really REALLY wants to see a sort of Rome total war/Age of empires remake where it is controlling entire armies of this. 2) With the fire absorbing shambles that you mentioned towards to start, the first thing that came to mind for me was the 'Fire Mt' and etc seen in Australia where there is a fire that has been burning for hundreds of years without going out either due to low oxygen or just slow rate of combustion (often seen in underground fires e.g Fire Mt). This relates to the shambles as you could have them just catch on fire with a slow burn that doesn't really damage them but results in them dealing contact fire damage back at you, with grappling with a smoldering shamble being just constant burn damage. (In Newcastle Australia a few years ago there was a guy that was digging in his back yard and had the ground collapse under him and he fell into a underground tare-fire and got suck waste deep in this hole and by the time he was rescued he had 3rd degree burns from the waste down) ps. extra points if the smoldering shamble explodes on death as its natural gas in its body ignites on death.

Blights became a powerful tool for me in my current campaign, party was called on to investigate a growing corruption on behalf of a private group of noblemen and priests... During their adventures they saw the corruption slowly waking up, I didn't even use Blights for a while, first there was wildlife made frenzied and bloodthirsty, then there was a man where the pores of his skin burst and bark grew from it after he and his companions ate the fruits of some mysterious tree (which the aasimar managed to cure him from without killing him) Then, there was death. Miles of woodland, just blackened and dead... I managed to really get them when I described the disgusting fate of a rare and beautiful mundane beast -- the area was a tropical forest, and the party made note of a pained tiger with a stark white coat, majestic and yet barely breathing, roots growing into its corpse and literally sucking the life blood out of the creature and leaving it in a semi-sedated state, and whilst they focused on it, they looked up and saw dozens of other animals in similar states, the only other thing of note nearby... A copse of dead trees, with a single, parched white tree, massive in size within the center. A Gulthias tree. Ah... they prepared so well to annihilate this wretched thing, the warrior was going to bring it down with a greataxe even if the weapon was dulled, oil and fire were readied... To see the look on their faces when the warrior's axe, upon touching the bark of the tree, violently exploded into a thousand metallic shards, and the tree in the dead silence thereafter writhing and releasing a horrible mimicry of a human-like scream just as rain began to fall...

A horror game that starts with the plants keeps hooking into your clothing (difficult terrain). The further you move into the woods you realize too late that you are surrounded. Yet you look around and all you see is the shrubs and trees. Your instincts know something is out there but you don't understand how much danger you are in as all you see is plants as far as the eys can see.
@Akravator12

There's more plants in there than I realized! As far as changing plants up to make them a bit more interesting, I gave my players a hard time by having some twig blights infested with swarms of spiders that would pour out of them when they died unless they were killed with fire. There was only a couple that did this, but boy was that dangerous! Those swarms don't mess around and are way more dangerous than their CR suggests.

I actually *really* like the design of the shambling mound's specific absorption effect. From the mindset of a player whose never encountered one before, their first instinct will be to hit it with Fire, which it resists. (And for this trap to work, you as the DM should make it clear that this thing resists what it does as they cycle through the elements.) After Fire, they might go to cold, thinking that it's a water-based plant monster and that maybe because it resists fire then it will be weak to cold. Also a resistance. After that, the fight has gone on for two turns and the player is down two possible elements that would work on this creature... and the only remaining third level pure damage spell left on the table is lightning bolt (Or like... vampiric touch. I'm sure there are supplements that have added more.)

Recently my players came across a shambling mounds grove where trio of briarwood dryads would wait until travelers made camp then impersonate one of the two on watch to lead the other straight into the mounds maw. And once the rest panicked and ran into the dark woods to help their swallowed friend they discovered the vine horrors. Who, as an extension of the shambling mound worked to incapacitate food for it. Players get scared as hell when two players are inside a shambling mound and the other three are immobilized by HP sucking roots and blinding acid spores are covering their faces.

My players were really confused as they have never seen them and assumed they were just evil.

You guys were talking about Ferngully, and something that I want to do is convert Hexxus. Maybe the humans in that campaign concept are using magic to chop down the trees & the destruction becomes so suffused with magic that it gains sentience, driven purely by man's desire to grow, even at their own expense

We normally think of treants as having their heads as being the leafy part and the roots as the feet. However, I've thought for a while that trees and whatnot are upside down from us, with the roots as their mouths and they use their feet as snorkles to get air as they eat. Seems difficult to roleplay though

Pruitt's campaign idea about defending the forest sounds like the opposite of one of my campaign ideas. In mine, you'd be the humans trying to cut down trees and gather resources while defending yourselves and the workers from elves.

One idea I had once that would utilize plant enemies substantially is a post-apocalyptic setting where the world has been reduced to...forest. We're used to thinking of a post-apocalyptic world denuded of vegetation due to our own experiences with environmental calamity, but a world of ceaselessly encroaching forest is also inimical to agriculture and civilization. Add an intelligence or magical influence and stir, and presto, plant monsters ahoy.

You can do a dancing plague story line with unknown Myconids spreading spores with images and feelings in a village, but failing to understand that the villagers can't just keep dancing.

Brian C Depends on the universe, I guess. And I figure since humans are biologically compatible with both elves and orcs, it would only make since that elves and orcs themselves would be compatible, although I would make it so that there are some other consequences, like maybe elf-orcs can't reproduce themselves.

That sounds like an interesting idea, and well-reasoned. If you go by a Tolkein-esque cosmology in which orcs are elves corrupted by evil magic, it seems to me like the children of an elf and an orc would just be orcs. Perhaps even the elf parent would become an orc from being physically and emotionally connected to the corruption. Either that, or the child is a human because they just cancel each other out!

I've had an idea for years of a FeyWild forrest or jungle breaking loose into the Material Plane and slowly spreading. "You look away from the jungles edge for just a moment, but when you look back, it has moved significantly closer." Rangers and Druids find that they can't accurately find there way, as landmarks that were there days, hours, or mere moments ago are no longer visible. The Creeping Forrest will be full of sentient and dangerous plants and plant creatures, as well as some fey who were swept up in the exodus of their home. Perhaps there are some kindly forrest creatures or fey who are trying their futile best to resist the corruption that has swept them up. Animals that would normally be docile are either violently corrupted, or else replaced on the food chain as food by the newly voracious plant-life. All this is spurned on by The King of Thorns, a plant based, Ice Queen of Narnia analogue.

One plant monster I'd have loved to see make it to Volo's was the Battlebriar. This wasn't some goofy plant monster, these were giant plants grown as siege engines. in 4E they were level 17 to 24. In 5E they could easily be level 16/17.

True story, first time I even encountered a Trent as a new player, our party was traveling through the woods and our guide, who was drunk, went off to take a whiz. Suddenly, he's drunkeningly yelling about the trees movie and I, being the only one who didn't know any better, assumed he was just drunk, until they attcked.
