Hi everyone,
My name is Tracy and I garden (indoors and outdoors) in zone 5, bake and cook at my home in Toronto, Canada.
You are watching a video on how I plant my husband's favourite annual alyssum in my sunny front garden filmed on May 27, 2023. Alyssum has a beautiful sweet scent and does well in a sunny location with well-drained soil. It is also a cold hardy annual that can be planted in early spring and well into early fall.

Hi Tracy! I love watching your plants and flowers, they look gorgeous! One thing that I also love from your garden is your lawn, your grass looks so beautiful, green and very thick (and no visible weeds)! What's your secret to a very healthy lawn? I'd love to make mine similar to yours! Thank you for your advices Tracy!

Thank you a Minh! The trick is to over-seed the lawn in the fall a Minh! Your lawn needs about 4 bags of seeds from Costco! Remove all weed and use a spreader to spread 4 bags everywhere in the fall. Weekly removal of weed is needed! :-)

I just planted some alyssum yesterday as a border in a big pot surrounding my bee balm. Hoping it looks cute. Will be feeding it today I think with my water soluble fertilizer as well as all my hanging baskets.

Is this purchased Alyssum? I recall you started alyssum from seed last year. Is this because of the cold spring?

Yes, with the cold spring and busy work schedule I didn’t get it together to start my alyssum seeds this year. Alyssum seeds need to germinate in cooler weather and by the time I had the time to start them, the temperature got really warm. It’s unfortunate because Alyssum is probably one of the easiest annuals to start from seeds. Happy gardening Nonna Mash! 💚

Do you find that alyssum attracts ladybugs to you garden? I have an aphid infestation and I was thinking of planting alyssum to attract the ladybugs.

I'm hearing that the aphids themselves will bring in the ladybugs quicker. I've just discovered an infestation on my Lupines and I'm leaving them alone hoping this is true and the sacrificial plant wasn't for not. 🤞🏻😊

I had bad case of aphid infection on my roses 2 months from mid March to me d may. I tried to spray them they seemed to get worse. After I left the roses on their own, no more aphids on the roses for almost two weeks.

@@tiffanienguyen7174 Oh that's very encouraging. I've been collecting lady bugs I see in other areas of the yard and bringing them to the Lupine plant and tell them "here is tonight's dinner, you're welcome 😁"

I just planted alyssum and didn't get them in the ground before they started to dry out. Are they a goner or do you think they will come back to life?

Hi Ana, I’m sorry to here about your alyssum. It depends on the roots - you may have some that survive and live on. The plants that do survive may be small and not as full. I too had that issue with something eating the roots of my alyssum plants. Even though many of my alyssum plants did survive - but they are little tiny thing. In previous years, by this time they grow really big for me already. I hope 🤞 some of them will survive for you like they did for me. Happy gardening!

I just got chased inside by mosquitos from tending to my self-sown alyssum. It's great when that happens but this beginning stage of painstakingly pulling out the emerging weeds among them, ugh.

The white alyssum is an annual in our zone. The only perennial alyssum in our zone is a yellow variety. In your zone 8+, these may be perennial and invasive as their seeds are abundant and spread far.
