Growing grass seed is a simple process. In this vid, I show you all the steps to planting grass seed at a home in Joliet, IL. Here we have almost bare ground on a small section of the front lawn.
Here is the old, horrible growing grass seed video I did a few years ago (in case you want to suffer )

Thank you for this video! My grandmother passed over three years ago and her grave site still has not grown grass! After watching I will be able to beautify the area around her headstone! Very simple and to the point, thank you again!

In the same situation with my husband's headstone...I've gone to the cemetery and found that the cemetery groundskeepers just throw grass seed on the DRY HARD ground--as though that would do something!!

Hey Al! Larry in Chicago again. Last year I had shoulder and bicep surgery so I was out of the lawn care game. I had a service come and I have to say, it never has looked worse! So anyway, I am back to my old self and catching up on your videos and this was a huge help! Thanks! I went out and visited Home Depot this morning and got all of the stuff that you used for this lawn and I replicated it. There was a section of my yard that had grub damage last year (imagine that, and i paid them for grub treatment and still got them.) so I cleaned it all out and did what you did here. I had a really thin lawn in the front yard as well, (that used to be the best looking part of my lawn till last year) and I did the seed, peat moss, and patch master. I did do the milorganite a couple weeks ago on my entire lawn so I didn't do it again. I bought some starter fertilizer. I wanted to ask you before I went and put that down. Do you think I could still go ahead with the starter fertilizer?
@Thelawncarenut

lfh1973 Hey Larry - glad to hear from you and glad you are back to normal! 2 things here:1) no starter fert. We don't want to much in there. Save that for Fall. 2) make sure that Patchmaster is super thin and not clumpy. It can choke out the seed. If you think it's too thick, run a rake through it. Let me know how things turn out!

+The Lawn Care Nut what serious thoughts do you have about birds? I'm always fighting with keeping them off my seeded lawn. I watched your church lawn project and saw you also throwing out some seed after plug aerating. But I feel like the birds will just scoop up everything I throw out
@Thagurew
@Thagurew 7 жыл бұрын
Stephen J. Lonison You can hide the seed from birds by covering the seeded area with straw. A bale of straw covers about 1000 sq ft. Ideally the straw should be distributed on the seeded area where you can see half straw half soil. Straw also helps with acting as a barrier from large water droplets that could potentially disrupt the seeds spot in the soil. Also helps with erosion control and it keeps the soil damp and warm.

Perfect! I applied it the same way as you did with the peat moss, I sort of rubbed it through my hands and made a powder out of it. It's nice and thin. I watered it down twice today to keep it moist and I'll do that everyday. Super pumped to see it come back in nice and green. Hopefully by summertime I'll be looking at a nice lush green lawn. I don't think it was too far gone that I can't bring it back really nicely. Now a Three Floyds! ;)

I tried a version of this. I had to cover a huge bald spot after the removal of a tree stump. I live in Georgia that has red clay. I forgot to rake first but I spread the grass seed. Then I did a layer of the Milorganite and topped that with a layer of peat. I didn't use the Patch Master. I watered the grass with a hose for about 15 minutes morning and at sundown every day and after about 7 days, it started to sprout. Now it's been 14 days and I have pretty, bright green grass. I'm going to keep watering daily until the end of October. I'm so happy because I've tried growing grass in the past with no success.

Hey LNC love your videos and I had a question. I followed the instructions in this video on a small piece of yard around my flag pole and so far I'm getting really good results however I did seed two weeks ago Sunday Oct , 15. it's coming in good its about two inches tall do you think it will continue to grow enough to make it through winter? I live in northeast Tennessee and I planted a turf type tall fescue blend and I'm hoping it will last through winter. Also I have about 3 acres to mow so its not easily watered and i want to get the rest of my lawn looking much better. It's not all weeds but there are a lot of them especially wide bladed grasses. I plan on starting to rehab in early spring but don't have an irrigation system just a impact sprinkler. if i put down scotts water smart seed would the spring rains be enough to get it to germinate? i know this is long but i would really appreciate your opinion, thanks.

Hi Allyn I love your videos and they helped me so much! Regarding new grass seeding video here, you recommended 45-60 min of watering every day? Lastly can I add additional seed ( from another bag) to the scots coir as I was thinking the same as you, that the seed was on the minimum side. If so shall I put down the seed under the coir as it will have the soil contact given by the Scots coir. I suppose this will be better then putting it on top. Having said that it will look no different to the seeds in the Scots coir mix as that seems to rest on the top as well. If the peat is to cover the seed so it has a bit of soil on-top of it, I get that.... And also the peat will have good nutrients of soil so it will be ideal to cover the seed. But I don't get why the coir is guaranteed to grow every where and it worked for me. If the peat is to maximise the seed growth so that contact is maximum and birds don't eat and seed are buried ever so slightly then I get it.., please explain in detail where you can. Thanks

So I should be doing massive amounts of work but I can't stop thinking about my lawn and how semi-crappy it looks which is why i'm watching your awesome, informative, easy to follow video instead. I have a question that i'm hoping you can answer.... As I'm approaching June, I managed to kill some weed areas on my lawn. I got two more patches that i need to treat/kill. My question is, should i even bother killing them, now that we are in the month of June? Would it even be possible to grow grass on the spots I treated with the temps on the rise? I live in CT so temps are preparing to get warmer. Should I just wait until September when temps get cooler? My wife may divorce me (jokingly of course...i think) if I complain or stare at my lawn anymore. Just wondering if i should hold off and deal with the little green i have even if that means keeping the weeds there for their green color and working on it once temps drop.
