My raised bed low tunnels are ready for planting! The soil is consistently at 50 degrees over night, climbing into the low sixties on warm sunny days. All my cold-season seedlings are ready to be transplanted to their spring home.
Cold season vegetables are those that thrive in cooler temperatures. Lettuces, spinach, radishes and Asian greens like my little Green Jewel pak choi, which are the cutest little things, are great for cool soil. Don't ask me how to cook them though. At least not yet anyway. This is my first go with pak choi so I'll be learning along the way and I love that.
I wouldn't normally plant this early but the low tunnels, having warmed the soil for the last few weeks, make it possible. Which means I'll have vegetables sooner than later!
I'm pretty stoked about that!
I often mention All-American Selections (AAS) in my videos. They're a great resource for the home gardener and one I refer to frequently when looking for flowers and veg that will do well in my region. Check them out here...

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you'd like to see more garden content from a DIY gardener, click the bell to subscribe. That way, you'll never miss a post.
As always, thanks for your support and I'll see you in the garden!

You are in Illinois yes? Still feels a little early for leafy greens no? Oooh and your red cap threw me for a minute there 😬. Enjoying your vids.

Yes, I'm in Illinois. The low tunnels have warmed the soil and it's only for that reason that I'm able to plant early. The tunnels will stay in place for many more weeks and vented on the warm days so the veg doesn't cook. Thanks for watching!

Hi there! Yes, I'm in Illinois and without the low tunnels, it would be way too early to plant. Thanks for watching!

I planted music & elephant ear garlic( I think later than most people, and I threw some scallions in 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 the garlic is coming up, I just went out and spread the leaves around, we had terrible wind & rain, it was awful, but I don’t think it hurt anything!🙏🏻

I've always wanted to try elephant ear garlic. It's milder than garlic, right? We got spoiled here in Chicago with 70-degree weather for days and now we're dropping into the teens at night with highs in the 30s by day. The veg is hanging in there beneath the tunnels.
