Plasma Torch Pilot Arc Conversion . Do you need a plasma hf start to pilot arc converter ? Check out how i turn my hf plasma cutter into a pilot arc machine while still running the standard pt 31 - lg 40 plasma torch But i think it would also work with the ag 60 torch. No cost involved this is just how i do it but would not recommend you to do it.

Pete you are quite intelligent about lots of things. Pilot arc starting systems in plasma cutters have a high frequency generator designed AC plasma inducing jet that is 1/4" to 1/2" long from the cutting tip for a short while until the DC kicks in at the base metal to continue the cut. When you jump the positive ground or work piece continuously like that throughout the entire cutting process you will heat up the digital circuitry or electronics in the machines and shorten their lives. You are telling all of these listeners to do something that is not designed for their machines to do. Only pilot arc start machines designed to give the initial starts until it contacts through the metal while cutting then converts back to DC to cut for long periods without harm. If it was that easy the machine sellers would surely install a work piece wire on all of their machines. Research the differences in machines with and without pilot arc designs.

What's the difference between dragging on the metal you are cutting and having a wire attached to the tip that is clamped to the metal you are dragging on though? It's the same thing other than the wire wrapped around the end will get really hot because it's on the tip... As far as it knows, it's making a connection with the metal, so it should be kicking out of HF like it normally would, wouldn't it? It's really hard on the consumables, which is why I assumed it wasn't a great idea to do unless you needed to.

once you get started cutting on lets say a painted surface will the heat then burn off the paint once you get gong allowing a connection thru the tip again and not just the wire making the wire not heat up as much and last longer ? this way you'd only be using the wire to start but the melting steel/slag would then come in contact with the tip and it would cut as normal....thanks

@@petestools Thanks Pete. Finally purchased my cutter (the first five failed) and found that you can simply cut a straight line through heavy painted or rusty material by using a steel straight edge. Just use the earth clamp to hold the straight edge in place extending it 20mm past the start edge. With the torch nozzle up against the steel edge, it acts the same as your conversion wire or a pilot arc. Only works with the straight edge though. Cheers Mate

@pete's tools, @Fry's Country Life Channel. Did a bit of digging to try and find a kit. From what I can see, the pilot arc torches you can get on eBay/China come with a pilot arc wire built in which comes out next to the 2 pin one, made up with a ring lug on it. Tap that down to ground and you're away!

So how did you hook up the wire on the in side of the torch. I noticed in the video I didn't see the wire during the show. Thanks I like you're show very much.👍

Thanks for watching .With the p31 torch i couldn't find a way to put it inside the torch body as its not earthed through the torch. So i just make a little noose and hook it on the cutting tip.
