This was excellent tutorial, thank you so much! I have watched all your videos and on those earlier videos (filmed farther away) it seemed to me that your every coat was perfectly flat from the beginning, without any flattening. So, I have been wondering why do you need flattening if it already looks perfect. In this video you showed close-ups and then I saw those bubbles and lines and now I understand the need of flattening. You are talented teacher, your instructions are clear and you obviously want to courage us non-professionals to try and learn a new skill. I won't ever be a professional plasterer, but with lots of practicing I hope to achieve a skill level which satisfies my humble needs. And for that we need professionals like you, who are willing to teach beginners. Some other professionals are telling that we are not even allowed to try plastering.

@@PlasteringForBeginners Thanks for helping me to take this on with a bit more confidence. I'll be going over rough and badly patched-up old plaster, I have two bags of Thistle Multi Finish to get me going, I can get more if I need to but two bags will be enough for now as I'm only doing one wall per day...better to take my time and concentrate on getting a good finish than rush the job and mess it up. The first coat of PVA is on and almost dry, another half hour or so and it should be ready for the second coat (I'll use a slightly thicker concentrate for that one), then it's plaster mixing time :-D Wish me luck!

He was using mesh on a roll that when he put first coat of plaster on, he then cut the sheet of mesh onto the wall so as to cover the whole area and then applied his second coat. His idea being that this should be put on old walls with cracks so as to stop cracks coming through the new plaster have you ever seen this being done and would be good to show on your channel. Could I practice my trowel techniques by just gliding by trowel across a wall trying to keep my trowel angle consistent, or will it damage my trowel?
@riconjos2 жыл бұрын
Most likely you will not damage your trowel, if not pushing it too hard and in a flat, even surface. If carefully done, you can improve its performance: as a matter of fact, a new trowel has to be “broken” so as to better perform, minimizing the ridge lines and smooth laying of the plaster (usually it is attained after considerable use or can be sped up by filing, which is basically what you would be doing in a way when practicing as you mentioned). Some new high end trowels come “pre-broken” (i.e. they have been carefully filed). Of course, if you are too harsh on a very bumpy/hard surface, it is also possible to damage its edges.

I was told about using PVA before the bonding plaster but! i'm puzzled as how many bonding coats to apply and when to use a Plasterers Scratching Tool? Please help. Do i use the scratching tool on the bonding or the multi finish plaster.
@PlasteringForBeginners4 жыл бұрын
You don't need to scratch bonding - its good but it just created a key for the top coat of plaster. You don't need to scratch multi finished either pal 👍

Really enjoy all of your videos and as I'm new to plastering I find them a big help. I wondered if you use a feather edge and could do a video on it?
@PlasteringForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate I appreciate that! I do but only for rendering or when I'm using backing plaster. I'll try and get one lined up for you mate 👍
@benrutherford74715 жыл бұрын
That would be great, do you use it to put on an even bonding coat?
@PlasteringForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's right mate. It makes the wall completely flat - you couldn't do it without the straight edge 👍
@benrutherford74715 жыл бұрын
Ah' right, I'll look forward to seeing that if you get a chance to make a video on it. Thanks again👍

So does the plasterer put up the plasterboard as well? or just tape and plaster it? thanks
@PlasteringForBeginners3 жыл бұрын
Yeah we do it all here in the UK but it's different everywhere. However, I try to avoid it ha!

Thank you for your fantastic videos. I've been studying yours and plasteringforce's for a while now and have begun plastering my own house. How can I avoid getting vertical humps near the corners of walls please? Also, which trowel would you recommend out of a permashape pre-broken in or a normal non broken in Marshalltown? Thank you
@PlasteringForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support mate I really appreciate it! Glad to hear your plastering is going well! I would invest in a Speedskim - this will get your wall a lot flatter and I find that it drastically improves the straightness of your wall. I always go for Permashape with Marshalltown pal. The quality is much better 👍

Great video, noticed you are wearing a wrist strap. I’m also suffering with pains in my wrist whist plastering. Does the strap help at all whilst plastering?
@PlasteringForBeginners4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! It really does help mate and it definately takes some pressure off when plastering. Try it out... Even if it helps a little bit. Worth a try 💪

Hi. Why is my plaster looking gritty and rough when I smooth it across the wall ?
@PlasteringForBeginners3 жыл бұрын
It could be a bad batch of plaster or it's not mixed properly. It could be a mixture of things.

Hi was thinking about doing plastering but people are saying won't be good for me because I have autism
@PlasteringForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
Just try it mate - I don't think you should disregard something until you've given it a go. You might love it so don't listen to them 😉

Another good video.... but I think you need to do teach different things as well.... getting the perfect angles, round door frames, low electrical sockets etc which are a lot harder to learn ....just saying not been critical 👍

Definitely! Good point and thanks for the feedback! I'll get on it pal, Cheers!

Do you go straight onto first coat using same mix for second coat? I have always done 2 separate coats however I’ve tried using the same mix with mixed results? Definitely quicker doing that and saves mixing up twice? What do you think is best?
@tombarr25365 жыл бұрын
I love your videos as well mate! Definitely should keep them coming 👍
@PlasteringForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. Great question! I advice beginners to mix a separate batch for your second coat of plaster. It gives you more time and I find it an easier process if you're new to plastering. However, I've plastered both ways so preference is something you'll learn for yourself but if your new I recommend two mix's. Thanks for the support by the way. Cheers 👍

Plastering For Beginners Thanks for the reply. I did plastering for around 4/5 years about 10 years ago and am now a gas engineer but I’m always doing bits and pieces. Mainly my own house but still enjoy watching the videos as always room to get better 👍

Does one trowel do the hole job?
@PlasteringForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
I tend to use 2 different types of trowels. My standard 14" stainless steel Marshall for applying the plaster and flattening for the first stages and then my Flexi trowel which I use for the final stages of plastering. If this doesn't make sense, I explain all of this in the welcome course listed in the description. Feel free to sign up for more information! Great question and thank you for the comment 👍 Cheers!

@@PlasteringForBeginners if you've never ever done it before you think it would be easier just to use the one trowel for every thing you can use just one trowel can't you
