Plastering For Beginners

Күн бұрын

Today we’re looking at plastering tools and when to use them. With so many new trowels and Spatula’s on the market, it’s hard to decide which tools to use. And the problem is that some plasterers are using the wrong plastering tools at the wrong times.
And this will cause serious issues with your finished walls. Which is why I want to show you a guide for using plastering tools correctly.
I’m going to walk you through a series of scenarios with a clear description on what tools I’m using for each job. I’ll show you how the right way to use these tools and exact times on when to use them.
It’s a big one but there’s a lot to learn so get comfortable. If you like this video please like and subscribe. And feel free to leave a comment - we’d love to hear from you. You can also visit out website for more advice on plastering. The link’s below:

Been plastering for years always had a large laying up trowel and my Marshall Town for troweling off and wet troweling. But because of you I now have a flexy trowel and today I got a plastic trowel and a speed skim ! Going to try it out tomorrow ! Lol and thanks by the way for the sponge tip on rendering ! Makes every job look amazing ! Top Bloke ! I started as a plasteres mate and the old boy I worked for use to put a shine on every elevation on purpose ! Just to piss the painters off ! 😂👌

Thank you for this video. I am a beginner. You basically had a filled in doorway that was in an existing wall covered with a sheet of drywall. Were the existing walls also painted drywall? Or were they plastered walls? You used what type of plaster mix over that drywall patch? Was it a base coat specific for unpainted drywall? If that new drywall was painted could you just have covered it with your multi finish plaster? Did you use any bonding agent? This was a good video that showed different substrates which is very important and if you can just summarize what you used again I would appreciate it?? My biggest problem is what I would have to use here in the states as opposed to what you used in your country. Assuming I would want to plaster over painted drywall, would I be correct in using a multi finish plaster as you used here to finish with? Or would I have to use a bonding first coat (or even a liquid boning agent) to start? Sorry for all questions and appreciate all this info. Still watching all your videos to learn. It is harder than you make it look. You do outstanding job my friend. But I am getting better. I just have to use correct type of finish over painted drywall.

Hey Blaine you should check out the Nela black edition speedskim I bought the 1200 one a few months ago and love it. Speedskim is a little too soft and forgiving Nela blade is .4mm as apose to speedskims .3mm makes a big difference also the grip is real nice you won't want to hold your speedskim again only negative I could say is it is much heavier but in my opinion you can look past that when you see how it feels in your hand and preforms !
@dcp6513

Another brilliant video Blain. So let’s get this right, after applying the second coat of finish plaster, you flatten with a speed skim, what about the edges, can speed skim get in and flatten the edges or do you need brush it down with a water brush and then flatten with a trowel? Then after the flattening, you let it pick up a little and then do your first trowel, and this is done with a stiff blade (standard steel trowel). Second flatten is also done with a steel trowel 3rd is a wet trowel which is done with a Flexi (steel) blade trowel And the 4th and final one is plastic trowel. Here it’s a dry trowel and no water is added. Is that the correct order? P.s I Appreciate the content you put out there about this trade. Iv accumulated a wealth of knowledge.

Personally I use the Refina speed skim, it has flared edges so you can get into the corners. Flatten second coat with a speedskim of any brand. Leave it 15 mins or so depending on heat and give it a quick trowel to loose any lines and square off your edges After another 15 mins or so I use a brush to clean off opposing walls where new plaster meets it and ceiling lines coving etc and give it a first trowel with a tiny amount of water. Square off corners initially with a trowel Give it 15-20 mins, maybe a bit more and give it a wet trowel and use a corner trowel for the first time 15-20 mins later repeat above 15-20 mins later give it a dry trowel and use a small brush so clean edges and corners

Just bought a carbon marshalltown 13 inch, was debating getting one for ages due to the supposed maintenance (which is literally drying it and a wipe of wd40), but after my van and tools were stolen it was the kick I needed to get one. Only question I have for myself is why wait so long, great trowel, so much nicer than stainless steel!

Hi mate. The problem with Bonding is that it's not the best product to use in bathrooms because it isn't great in damp conditions. Hardwall is probably your best shout here but I'd properly still skim it before tiling 👍

I’ve always wondered this. If Multi can stick to plasterboard with no mechanical key and no pva then you’d think it’d stick to backing plasters no probs. Belt and braces maybe?
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 жыл бұрын
It's just habit I suppose mate. British Gypsum advice to key up Hardwall before plastering for a stronger bond but I must admit that they've started you don't need to key Bonding. So to be honest, I probably didn't need to. But the Devil's float does help to further flatten your walls so I still use it all the same. I think it's just old techniques that are still being used. I mechanical key is never bad though because the plaster will have a deeper bond to it's background. It definitely grips better with a key so for the sake of 2 mins I just do it ha!

@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot
@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot Жыл бұрын
I put a 3-1 mix on initially to seal it, then a neat coat. Once completely dry I either go straight on with multi if it’s a really thin pattern, or I’ll do a magic mix first coat (let’s say it’s a two bag mix, I’ll put in a quarter of a bag of bonding), then second coat with just multi
