Join Plastering For Beginners and receive a free plastering course ideal for anyone who’s learning how to plaster: plasteringforbeginners.co.uk/...
In this video, we’ll show you how to plaster a big ceiling. They can be tough to handle sometimes!
The hardest thing with plastering is making sure you can cover a large area before the plaster sets. You’re always on a clock and if the plaster dries out before you’ve had a chance to flatten it then your in for a lot of trouble!
And big ceilings have the same issues which is why we’re going to show you how to plaster a ceiling for beginners. They often take a lot more time than walls which is why we need to come up with a plan for making it easier.
We’ll discuss:
- Plastering stilts and how to use them
- Ox Speedskim pole attachment review (Lifesaver!)
- Plastering techniques for plastering ceilings
- Mixing the plaster with advice on consistency
- Cross towelling and why we need to do it
And much, much more!
This is just a snippet of what you can receive from today's video. If you enjoy this tutorial please like and subscribe for more videos. We’d also love to hear from you so if you have any questions just ask!
For more information on plastering you can also visit our website:

The cameraman deserves some credit. Makes the video far more professional than a fixed camera. Takes the whole thing up a league. No waving the camera about and excessive use of the zoom. Perfect. Great video. I've now plastered a large renovation thanks to your videos. Spent a lot on tools lol ☺️ If I get it wrong sponge float saves me. Big thanks

brave man for taking on such a large ceiling on your own, I used to be able to do it years ago but know in my 60's and struggle so I get the labourer to help with flatting the coats, I found these large flatting tools help a lot ,save your wrists a lot, I normally polish up with a plastic trowel, but hat hat off to your abilaty to do a commentary as well, well impressed

I have been plastering 25 years and your comment at the beginning is spot on, people need to learn to use a trowel only from start to finish too many people think that they can take short cuts with some of the new tools and there is no short cuts

Well I finally ordered an st speedskim and used it for the first time today. I was doing a ceiling over lite artex. I haven't done a ceiling in a long time it's been mainly walls so I was keen to try one. What a great tool it is for flattening out! Saved a lot of time. Highly recommend it. I only had the 600 but likely to get a bigger one at some point.

Tried out my 600 speedskim on a big ceiling yesterday and was amazed with the results, used my plazifex trowel to take out the few lines it left before the second coat. Repeated the process for the second coat and then swapped to the thin metal blade, the time and energy saved was remarkable and the finish was amazing. Definitely a game changer 😀😀

When I used to do plastering. I used to make sure there was a gap as big as my fist 👊 between the ceiling and the top of my head vertically so when I’m putting it on and troweling up. I’m not looking up at the ceiling and straining my neck. I’m looking forward. But slightly up if that makes sense. There was a big gap between your head and the ceiling. And it makes it so hard. Try making the stilts higher and you’ll find it’s not as straining. Great video by the way. You done well doing that ceiling on your own. I would struggle. I stopped plastering 4 years ago. Bloody hated it in the end 😂. Great video

Exactly what Jimmy was saying is the right way. Leaving yourself short you're adding alot of pressure on your arms and shoulders and back for that matter. You'll get a much bigger spread the closer you are to the ceiling and have it on in half the time. Fist between your head and ceiling and you'll get a spread of about 6 foot each stroke. Plus use a spot board its alot quicker and saves the elbows from scooping out of a bucket

He's using multi finish, it has a longer setting time than thistle board finish, I always used board finish in the good old days('70s,'80s), gave a paint friendly eggshell texture after trowelling. Also we used hessian scrim put up with plaster, cotton scrim for walls only.

Just taken deliver of a speed skim, plastic blade, got a large ceiling to do and old knees, also got a grip and pole and will give it a go. Noticed it has some ridges on the backside of the blade, I assume that’s normal and doesn’t effect the flatness. Nice to see the corners rounded!

I used those same stilts and a 1200 speed skim on a ceiling recently. First time on stilts was a race as the ceiling had a lot of suction and went off quick. I used a pair of neoprene knee pads to make the stilts more comfortable. Also tried an old pair of winter socks, with the toes cut off and doubled back to make a sort of pad.. top work though aye, you make it look easier than when I do it!

Hi mate! I hate it when the suction kicks in, (especially when your on stilts ha!) Good idea about the knew pads by the way, I'll bear that in mind for next time! Thanks for watching pal - I really appreciate it 👍

@@PlasteringForBeginners top man, I actually got the confidence to get the speed skim and a refina sponge float after watching your videos. Best plastering instructions on the internet. I do interior refurbishment work, which occasionally involves plastering. If it's small I take it on, if it's a lot I sub it out, but I'm trying to train up my labourers so we can take on a bit more. I also like plastering. Keep up the good work. John

Want to buy an sf one and give it a go what’s the best size to go for with the view of also buying the other blades as well. Also looking at buying an ox 14 inch trowel. My trowel is only 12. Can’t warrant the price of marshaltown perma range. I do a lot of patching in wall chasers dot and dab and after watching your videos I’m going to skim some full walls in my house for practice

Bought one last week to use on a ceiling and was very disappointed with the Speedskim St. I found it left lines also the bracket doesn't seem to fit snug to the Speedskim. I've just stumbled across a review you did of using one and you said to round the edges which I'm going to do. But not sure about fitting the bracket, I may be fitting it wrong. 🤷‍♂️ I want it to work so I will persevere with it.

Such a large ceiling, will the plaster not dry before the whole surface is covered? I thought there is a 30-minute window to work with a plaster batch but it will take longer to cover the whole thing for a beginner

Top tips for stilts#keep top buckle on the metal cup# Best gauge for comfort is thumb and little finger spread wide between head and celling...throw down sand on a power floated concrete floor.. The newer style "Skywalker"are supposed to be more comfortable...

Its good practice to fasten the calf straps of the stilts before the lower foot straps, the upper strap gives more security while "strapping in", if you have a woops with only the bottom straps done up you WILL break your ankle, well done on the vid.

@PlasteringForBeginners

The room was prepped by some Tackers but some of the reveals were out of plumb. I wasn't happy with them so I screwed a timber to the face of the reveals. I then bonded the reveals plumb using the timber as a guide - is a fast way to get accurate reveals 👍

Hi Blaine. I’m a decorator and plaster my own work. I don’t take anything on too large ie whole house but a large room is no real issue. I have a couple of plastering jobs coming up soon, while room and ceiling and interested in investing in the speed skim products to flatten all areas. Rather than purchase the whole range of sizes which is expensive what size , set up would you start with. Cheers Ps. Great videos. Very helpful. Pete

Nice video bud 👍 your shin straps should be the first straps you need to secure, if you loose your balance your feet will be free to land on the ground and when your adjusting the height its a hands width between your head and the ceiling 👍
