This video is a trip. I feel like I should be watching it on a hit of bomb. Seriously though, I just replaced a plastic gas tank on a chevy truck, because a tweaker cut a slice in it with a utility knife to steal the gas, and I was thinking about what it would take to weld the slice. Welding plastic gas tanks in the future may be more common then you could imagine. Inflation, an high gas prices are coming. If I saw it once, it will happen again, and again. Just like converter thefts. I would like to see if it can be done. If it can, I would probably buy this product.

I just bought an American version of this welder that is obviously cheaper looking. This is a great video and previous research has told me to keep the heating element from burning out, you should keep the welder on After welding with the heat turned to Zero to cool the element before unplugging. My welder did not come with the automatic feed nozzle and was wondering where I can purchase this. Thanks for the great video, RH DSD

Hi there, If the plastic you are trying to weld is a 'thermoplastic' then it should be possible to weld it. You can do a small test to establish whether it is a thermoplastic or a thermoset - using a sharp blade, cut a slither of the material off the parent. If it curls up, then its a thermoplastic. If it remains very rigid and straight, then it is a thermoset. A thermoset materail is not weldable. Hope this helps.

Quick question, When welding an internal corner on two upvc sheets, vertically, do you need to have a gap between that materials to give the weld rod somewhere to melt into?
@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 10 жыл бұрын
It depends on the application. If you are after structural strength, perhaps this is best. A "v" groove usually does the trick.. If you are welding into a 90 deg, then no. But you would need to '"tack" the materials.. Have a look here for more detailed info - www.plasticweldingtools.com.au/how-to-weld-plastics/

Actually thus technic is great for motorcycle plastic. when you consider the cost of a single fairing or dude panel can cost $900.00 it's very cost affective. No. You need accurate temperatures to be used when welding specific plastics. Their welding temperatures all vary slightly... So you need a machine with electronic temperature control. In some cases plastics will require 300 - 400 deg Celcius ... So a hair dryer simply wont work

There have been a few comments along the lines of 'i can do this with a soldering iron' -- our response to this is - No you can not. These techniques show plastic welding to the highest possible strength, and to worldwide plastic welding standards as set by the DVS joining association of Switzerland/Germany. A soldering iron runs at very high temperatures and will burn and degrade plastics. We would call that 'fusing', not Welding. Weld testing will show this.

@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry it is not. Welding is a molecular process where the parent and welding rod and welded with almost no loss of strength. Thermoplastics require specific welding temperatures in order not to damage or degrade the material. A soldering iron will do this as soon as you contact the plastic. You will NOT ACHIEVE STRUCTURAL WELDING WITH A SOLDERING IRON.
@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 7 жыл бұрын
A soldering iron still will not correctly and evenly pre heat the parent material. If you know of a very accurately controlled soldering iron.. please send me a link. The best way to solder with any such control is to use a hot air tool with electronic temperature control.. just like our plastic welding tools. Hope this helps.

@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 10 жыл бұрын
Hi DaveStaff4, Answers to your questions - 1. "Tacking" as shown in our video has no real structural strength. A Tack is to close up the joint gaps, and to help align the two parts. 2. Yes, the completed weld can be sanded with abrasives - use a range of abrasive grits in order to achieve the required finish.. and yes, it is common to sand the parts to allow a high gloss paint finish. 3. Ensure you identify the plastic material first to ensure it is a weldable thermoplastic. @@MudMotorsMax eddyline recommended methyl methacrylate and fiberglass cloth. But I use the carbon fiber because I think it lasts longer and it's stronger. I used my Dremel to open up the cracks extra wide so that I could Gap fill the cracks with the methyl methacrylate. Then I use 50 grit sandpaper to create a 1-inch rough on either side of the crack on the inside and outside of the kayak. Then I used a wire wheel on my power drill to put some deep grooves on both sides of the crack inside and out again one in into the roughed-up 50 grit section. I applied the methyl methacrylate to a 4in wide carbon fiber cloth and also applied the methyl methacrylate to the inside of a kayak and then applied the carbon fiber cloth coated with the methyl methacrylate onto the inside of the crack. Then I used more methyl methacrylate over the top of that sandwiched with another layer of carbon fiber cloth and methyl methacrylate and then overlaid it with more methyl methacrylate. On the exterior I filled the Gap with methyl methacrylate and smooth it out with a spatula and built it up taller than the crack and use the detail sander to bring it down smooth. I thought about covering it up with a decal or painting it but actually having a crack in the kayak sort of seems cool to look at. I might paint it with an acrylic paint at some point. I even toyed with the idea of sanding the whole bottom of the kayak and applying something like magic any foul which is a new silicone-based antifoul. Not that it needs that or anything but maybe that would be kind of cool. But anyway it took a bit of time to do this but it was well worth saving this awesome eddyline 14 sit-on-top.

Interesting; never knew they did that. I guess it replaces acetone. On the one example, the bead didn't look too good. I was a good welder in high school; both gas and arc. What does an average plastic welder get paid and are there a lot of jobs out there? I saw one available but they wanted experience. Just curious.

Hi Steve, thanks for your comment. Remember this is simply a demonstration ... In respect of the welders job and usual remuneration, It really depends what country you are in , and also on what particular welding you are doing. For example, a guy welding repairs to bumpers is perhaps more likely to earn more if he is fabricating, or welding a waterproof membrane... like a roof.

John, I had good kids that were conservative and well behaved. I was lucky. I was tired of all the common core crap and I wanted to try something else. I'm only 50.

I did this for a few years in a fab shop. I was required to get full fusion while keeping the rod round and prett so I looked more like the first weld. Thats poly propylene. Corzan is much more difficult and interesting process.

Is it possible to weld PVDF to CPVC ?
@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 8 жыл бұрын
+John Noone Hi John Noone, In most cases compatibility is very important. With requirements like this we suggest you try taking a slither from one part and attempt a weld on the other part. This will be the most compatibility you can achieve, so you would have to make a decision on the resulting weld strength and whether or not it was sufficient for the application requirements. www.plasticweldingtools.com.au/how-to-weld-plastics/

Hi John, these are different materials, so you should not expect a good result. While you may see 'some' kind of bond, you will not be able to effect 'good' welding. We can supply both PVDF and PVC welding rods, although PVDF is not listed on our e-commerce welding rod website. For ordering suggest you email me direct at tim@plasticweldingtools.com.au You will find the PVC rids here 》》 www.plasticweldingrods.com.au Hope this helps..

@TECHSPANONLINE

Hot air plastic welding is the process of joining two or more plastic surfaces together using hot air, usually applied by a heat gun. Plastic products can't always be made in one piece. It is often better and more economical to fabricate products as separate pieces.

Can this be used to weld acrylics?
@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can weld acrylic. However, this material tends to absorb moisture from the environment, so the moisture in the material will tend to 'bubble' as it is heated during welding. So if a high visual finish is required, it is not always possible to achieve. Hope this helps.

Guys, could anybody help me out? When you weld, do you melt the surface as well as the rod? Or do you just melt the rod? I cannot seem to get a strong weld if I don't melt the surface so I might be doing it wrong. However, some plastics are quite thin, so I always distort the parent material when applying pressure with the rod... :(
@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Farseer1995, you need to heat both the parent and welding rod evenly. This is how the pendulum welding process works.. the pendulum motion heats both the parent material and welding rod. Here is some more how to info >> www.plasticweldingtools.com.au/how-to-weld-plastics/

Would HDPE provide sufficient protection if used to make a motorcycle mask, or are there other weldable plastics that would be better suited for that purpose?
@TECHSPANONLINE
@TECHSPANONLINE 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew Traver, I would check what regulations in your country state. There is likely to have been approved materials for such applications. Proceed with caution is my advice. HDPE is commonly used for an array of plastic around the home. Recycling Bins, Water tanks, Wheel barrows, Milk Bottles .. even Petrol & Fuel containers.. and many more. It is easy to fabricate and weld.

The rods may look different, but they are the same material. We used a different colour simply to allow the viewer to see the process easily. In this case the parent material and welding rods are polypropylene.
