Its pretty painfull to see Elias smile at Barnes even though they had huge fights between em, despite all that Elias sees him as an ally and its just sad to see him go like this

I don't think Elias smiles because he sees Barnes as an ally. It's because he knows what's about to happen and that's his reaction.

@@MrMatthiasSchneider Elias represents American innocence. That same do-good American spirit that served it so well during WW2. By Vietnam it had been replaced by a growing cynicism and bloodlust. Elias knows Barnes is messed up yet even despite Barnes cruelty Elias didn't think he could ever go so far as to kill one of his own men. That look of shocked realization is his final loss of innocence. Later-as he's running from the Viet Cong and dying in his Jesus Christ pose-the evidence of his still being alive is an allegory for Christ's rebirth. He helps Sheen's character realize Barnes sin thus redeeming Sheen's character of the 'sin' of hating Barnes cruelty and sickness. Barnes represents all that's evil about the US while Elias represented the good. A good Stone felt had been eroded if not killed by the conflict.

Barnes was a friggin coward. He was jealous that the platoon preferred Elias and he was scared that Elias would eventually expose his attempt at killing an innocent child. Total POS. Kills his own Soldier in cold blood. He also hated that Elias was not scared of him like the others were. The funny thing is, When Elias first sees him, he smiles at Barnes, first happy to see it was one of his own. You almost get the impressions that Elias was going to forget the child incident and move on But Barnes was a monster that should not have been there. His time for war was over. He was more of a problem than a solution. Elias at least brought a sense of balance and humanity to the troops. Barnes made them want to kill each other. Been in the Army almost 35 years now and counting, and there is NO place for people like Barnes.

The details, whether intended or not, is amazing. Elias' tactical reload, and Barne's car15 smoking from the handguard indicates that the weapon is still somewhat warm after sustained combat with the VCs. And Taylor's handling of the weapon and the environment shows he is now a seasoned soldier. He is clearly influenced by Elias more so than Barnes, because both Taylor and Elias have their rifle slings removed(no sling, no unnecessary squeaks and noise in the jungle) but Barnes still has it attached on his.

It wasn't the war itself, it was the public response. The war actually went incredibly well for the Americans and South Vietnamese but all the reporting and portrayals of it back home painted them as evil or losing horrifically. As a result, morale was extremely low and any replacements you received were under the belief that they had no chance of winning and were being brought in to die or murder innocent people. The political leadership back home also purposefully sabotaged the military's efforts because they didn't want to follow through with Kennedy's plan because it would cost too much. Instead of winning a war and getting a useful ally in the region along with the love and support of its people, they decided to embarrass a country with a perfect war w/l ratio and make fools of the men that served there. The fighting was no walk in the park, but the stress of being turned into public enemy number one and being betrayed by their own people at all levels definitely did a lot of harm. Vietnam is just now reaching levels of progress and civility that it would've had during the conflict had the military actually been allowed to do its job.

Crazy how history repeats itself or how life imitates art , but the recent case of (former) Navy Seal Officer Eddie Gallagher is eerily similar to the Platoon character Sgt. Barnes. Both were combat veterans who chose to re-up multiple tours, specifically in war zones, for their own diabolical reasons. Both were conditioned to kill without any conscience, consequence, in their mission. Both expected their peers to not intervene or talk about it, like "what happens on duty stays on duty:" The only difference I can can see between them is Sgt. Barnes crossed the line even further when he feels he can intimidate and kill his own men for going against him. Of course, Afghanistan and Vietnam are two different animals and 50 years apart, but notable (yet least talked about) was that the Vietnam war was notorious for a phenomena know as "fragging", as mentioned by someone earlier. Per Wikipedia: "Fragging is the deliberate killing or attempted killing by a soldier of a fellow soldier, usually a superior officer or non-commissioned officer. There were thousands of fragging 'threats' during the Vietnam War, most of which were never acted on. There are at least 800 confirmed attempts in the Army and Marines. 86 of the officers and sergeants were killed and approximately 700 were injured. This is only the documented cases." The Vietnam War was fought under conditions which were generally more chaotic and confusion, less high tech equipment, poor visibility and communications, fragmented military cohesion. Those conditions, when coupled with losses in the field, lend themselves to low soldier moral, in-fighting and the self-destructing "fragging" behavior. The Pentagon should have recognized this during the Nam and find a way to re-organize the platoons -- based on personnel similarities -- before sending them out to the field. This key military management detail would mean less in-fighting, more trust and team work, and no self-destructive fragging incidents.

Can't put into words how much I love this movie. Seen it many times but never loses it's impact. In this scene Elias a spiritual man smiles as he sees Barnes (grim reaper) accepting his fate. I believe he runs afterwards firstly to avoid capture by the enemy. Secondly I think he's reaching for heaven not the chopper but also to let the men (mainly Taylor) know who loved him what happened in order to bring Barnes to justice one way or another.

The coldest thing about this scene is Barnes eyes before he shoots. They’re calm and expressionless. Throughout the film we see his eyes look angry, hateful, and vengeful at various points, but there’s none of that here. It’s all business. He’s an animal, a predator, a wolf methodically eliminating a weak link in the pack. That’s what always stuck with me about this scene.

For those that have been in the service, law enforcement, or a high pressure job you learn to hate some of your co workers as much as the enemy or criminals. Your around the coworkers constantly not occasionally. A few coworkers take advantage of power or the system causing major problems. Others f#*!ups make productive work impossible. Barnes was wrong for killing Elias but he didn't want to get court martialed or compromise the cohesion and fighting ability of the platoon. Barnes did take his authority too far with crimes at the village and illegal killings. Taylor got pushed over the edge and evened it up at the end. Elias was too trusting of Barnes. Right or wrong when you throw a rat...it can get ugly.
