In this video, I’ll show you how to play guitar great using only the skills you already have. You won’t need to play any faster or harder than you can now … We’re going to take some easy guitar skills like bending strings, slides and vibrato and make easy, but great lead guitar licks with them.
Here’s what I’ll cover in this lead guitar phrasing lesson.
First, I’ll show you how to take a very easy lick and made it sound better and better simply by using the lead guitar skills you already know.
Second, we’ll take our super easy guitar lick and change the rhythm to make the phrasing sound a lot better.
Third, we’ll add vibrato in strategic places, and I’ll show you how to use that vibrato to make the lick sound even better.
Fourth, we’ll add some special slides to our lick and then it really comes alive.
Fifth, you’ll learn how to apply everything you learn to a second set of licks. This way you see how all the ideas can be applied to any guitar lick.
Sixth, I’ll teach you a technique I call “Super Slides”. This will help you to sound great on guitar when you play any lick. And the best part is, you can already do this!
Seventh, I’ll show you how to combine string bends and vibrato to help you massively improve your lead guitar phrasing quickly. This combination of techniques is so dramatic to listen to, it will help you impress a lot of people even you play slow and easy guitar licks.
You’re going to love this phrasing guitar lesson.

Mr Tom Hess, I am from Jamaica. I actually save all your videos on KZfaq and I watch them over and over. I have seen alot of other guitarist on KZfaq also, they are great I must admit because to reach at there level, they had to put in alot of hard dedicated work. But for you, you're spectacular. I am just learning to play the guitar 6 months now. I think I have learned enough scale, modes, appegios and 3rd. Still working on them to be flawless but that comes with continuous practice and time with good guidance. I would like a full beginner lessons from you on bending, slides, vibrato, hammer on, pull off for the start to spice up my solo. Want the learn the principles on how to apply them and also the basic on how to create them from scratch with the proper techniques . Something I can purchase from off your site. Great work, respect and one love. Looking forward

Once, you made a video about making other notes from a scale sound good, besides just the 1st, 3rd and 5th. I would like to see a video about adding notes that aren't part of the scale and making them sound good. For example, when soloing with a C major scale, add notes like D#, G#, etc. And make them sound good. Thank you in advance =D

I "discovered" delayed vibrato on accident. Ended a short lick on a note that just sounded blah. Bent the string as an afterthought and what do ya know I accidentally solved a problem on the spot. That's what I like about guitar. You always feel like your cracking its code and unlocking its secrets lol

Yes, exactly! Delayed vibrato sounds awesome. I learned it from studying great singers and copying the nuances of their phrasing. See this video: tomhess.net/HowToWriteGuitarSolos.aspx

Thank you for this video. This is really useful on practising slow controlled vibrato and slides. I tried every example with time and until I coul play it right. Last example you need to really think from which direction its useful to pick bend note to get pick resting and muting other strings. If you dont mute properly that fast bend release will cause lot of noise. I learned to mute it but making first upstroke for bend note to get pick ready to positioin to upper string to mute 🙂

I'm glad you liked the video Pasi :) And yes, sometimes you have to plan which way to pick the bent note to get the muting just right. Over time you will instinctively do it the right way without much thought :)

Awsome video, really description how to use your skills. I notice that every note that you are holding last forever and it doesn't lose power. I would like to see what is the right technic and what we need to practice to make good sustainable note. Thanks.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) The secrets to good sustain are: strong pick attack, wide vibrato, slides, fretting notes right next to the fret, having string action high enough to avoid string buzz and using a lot of gain on your amp. If you have active pick ups in your guitar, this helps a lot too.

Just recently encountered these videos and I'm trying to incorporate as much of the information into my practice. Thank you so much! Would you be able to make a video about how to hold the pick angle and tilt for sweeping down and up motions?

Can you talk about dialing in a lead tone for complete dummies
@dinein1970
@dinein1970 4 жыл бұрын
Start by dialing in your clean or the base tone of your amp. Use an EQ pedal as your "first stage" from the guitar. A BOSS EQ can be used as a BOOST pedal, but I like the MXR 6 Band because it can really create a very BIG sounding tone from a low watt tube amp. With an EQ, you can scoop out your mids or make your guitar sound really BIG. I like a pretty big Bell Curve Mid Hump in my mix, ala Dimebag. Compressor can have a BOOST feature. Then a low to mid gain drive pedal (Lovepedal Mosferatu, Amptweaker TightDrive, DOD Overdrive 250, TS808). This is the basic formula to emulate some great ROCK tones for sure. If you want something a bit grittier, Snouse BlackBox is a fantastic dirt pedal. If you want something RIDICULOUS, look to AmpTweaker for their TightRock. FatRock, TightMetal or FatMetal. Insanely AWESOME pedals. But honestly, start basic and get an EQ pedal, start there. You can use something like an MXR 6 or a 10 band as an "always on" and then a BOSS 7 band pretty flat across, but use the 7th as a volume boost, which is what Tom Morello does.
