Arthur English was a British television, film and stage comedian from the music hall tradition. This is a fascinating short documentary that gives an insight into his humble but interesting life.

I worked with Arthur on the 1987 Christmas Special of "In Sickness And In Health",(Series 3 Episode 7), when I played one of the Junior Doctors, he was a fine fellow Actor, great to work with, and a lovely man, very friendly, and chatty, I very much enjoyed this Production that you have put together, remembering Arthur, and thank you for a wonderful tribute to one of our stars of the stage and screen for so many years. One of many great Actors I have been privileged to work with in almost 50 years in the industry, who sadly are no longer with us, and it was nice to see the clip of Arthur with Jack Wild who I also knew, as he was a fellow pupil of my Stage School, This brought back lots of fond memories, and so I Loved it.♥

I occasionally use an Arthur English line from Are You Being Served? "I'm glad I don't have your nerve in my tooth!" He will always be remembered.

I met Arthur English when I was a young press photographer in Barrow in Furness. He was with his young wife Teresa. I worked for the local newspaper and I took a set of pictures in the nearby town of Dalton in Dalton Castle. I have absolutely no idea why he and Teresa were there (lost in the mists of time) but I remember him as a very nice chap and eager to help me get the photos I needed. --

A very touching and respectful tribute to a really good man. When I was growing up Arthur was always on TV, a stalwart of British entertainment, a friend in fact. Sadly we don't seem to produce such characters who have an impact and whom you will never forget anymore. most modern ones come and go and are simply forgotten.

My sister (Annette) in the 70s was crowned Miss Aldershot at the princess hall and after this win she started hanging around some show biz circles and it brought her into friendship with Arthur.( I might be wrong but he may of given her the winners award ,unsure though!! . I was only about 10 years old during this time when eventually I met the man himself. A most charming gentle character .. never met him again but I always remember our meet . Real good video .. well done 😊

I just did some IMDb research on him, and it’s amazing how he worked continually till very late in life. One of the most surprising roles he did was in a 1985 episode of Magnum P.I. called ‘dejavu’. Given the nature of his career, based otherwise entirely in English TV with the occasional English movie, I’d love to know how he got the role, and I’d love to see the episode, or at least a clip featuring him in it. Amazon prime features most of Magnum PI series for sale, but sadly not the series or episode featuring Arthur English.

Thanks for the info! I did find abit about this I just couldn't download the clip on Vimeo. It's the double episode magnum comes to London, and Arthur is a newspaper seller, I think he is in the scene for about a minute

He also did an episode of Magnum P.I. playing opposite Tom Selleck.

So sad that these fine English Actors are not with us anymore. True Masters of their craft and they only got a mere fraction of what these overpaid merchants get today and they seem to think that they are some kind of God that must be Worshiped.

@@MarkMahoney Turning left off Church Lane East into Brighton Road there was a shop on the right hand side (now 2 houses) on the bend that takes you down to Gillian Avenue, the garage was behind the shop. Blokes wore those brown overalls. The daily trek to Heron Wood from the West End!
