I was recently requested to make a video of what I never show in my videos - the winding, the sharpening the thorn needle, then the magic sound from the EMG horn. I chose one of my favourite discs - Beniamino Gigli sings "Ingemisco" (from Verdi's Requiem) on Victor Red Seal record 17584-A, played on an EMG Mark Xb Oversize gramophone with a Meltrope III soundbox and a Burmese Colour Needle. Recorded August 1939 at the Royal Opera House in Rome, with the orchestra conducted by Tullio Serafin.

If I'm not mistaken, it actually is (not taking into account the few sound generations lost because of using a needle made out of an acustic isolator). Using a burmese needle bypasses most stratches and sharp points of the grooves, reducing background noise but also sounding muffled

The transparent sound as reproduced on this EMG is nothing short of breathtaking ! Thank you so much ! This wonderful recording -demonstrating so well all the beautiful qualities and unfortunate mannerisms of Gigli's singing - is part of a complete recording of Verdi's Requiem Mass. It is a wonderful set, including Ebe Stignani, Ezio Pinza and Maria Caniglia singing with Gigli.

Welcome! If you search eBay for a Peter Greys sharpener, those are good as relatively easy to find, though I have always had to drill the chuck to make it large enough for most of the needles; they are available from www.burmesecolourneedles.com/ and are great. They don't work well on worn discs, but are superb one discs in excellent condition. Cheers!

This is such a treat! Is it rude to ask what mic (and other recording equipment) you are using? and where you place it in the room? Asking for a friend ;-)
@BassetHoundTrio
@BassetHoundTrio 3 жыл бұрын
Not at all! I use a Zoom H4 recorder (the H2 would likely be as good and less expensive) as the microphones, which I plug into a Canon 5D MkII digital SLR that has video capability. I use a long (15’) mini-cable to go from the headphone jack on the Zoom to the microphone input on the camera. I have the zoom about 12’ feet from the horn. If the sound is distorted on your videos, lower the headphone jack volume on the Zoom. Let me know if you have any more questions!

@@BassetHoundTrio Very many thanks for this superb recording. Your videos are the best on the planet from any acoustic gramophone and it is interesting to note the presence of the hard wooden floor of your lovely room which, in my opinion, produces a slight lift or reverberation compared to the equivalent in a carpeted room. Your video recording equipment and attention to detail is also truly wonderful. Many congratulations and looking forward so much to future postings.

@@grahamrankin This apprentice is greatly humbled to receive praise from The Master! Yes, I do think the hardwood floors add some reverberation to the acoustic. One friend suggested I do another video explaining just how an acoustic gramophone works. Just might do that someday!
