Plowing Snow: I Promise Not To Derail!

It is imperative to keep the railroad open throughout the winter. We got about 6 inches of snow and another 2 inches of rain on top of that, then above freezing temperatures with below freezing temperatures forecast for nighttime. Such conditions make it impossible to use the snow blower, and the Russell plow doesn't like it either. So, we start removing snow from the track with the coupler pocket plow. Then we can push back the banks with the Russell Plow.

What some people don't realize is that after you plow wet snow it becomes hard ice! Ever hear of ground heave? Derailment haters! Pssshhhaaa. Great video! Thanks !

Thick, heavy wet snow, great for building snow forts, but not much else.

A bit of a get-off now and then keeps the boy busy and out of trouble re-railing. Cool that you both can share in the railroad adventure.

nothing worse then that wet, sticky, slushy snow! if it keeps warm it will melt back, but more then likely it will re-freeze and ice will be all over! and the track will have a layer of ice on it. nice plowing, good luck with the pellet train. 4 derailments is not bad with the conditions you we’re running in.

I suggest that you get some brightly coloured sticks (plastic chopsticks?) and push one into the ground near to where you derail, each time you derail. You'll soon see where your track needs the most attention.

My thought is that a derailment does not necessarily mean that the track needs attention.

Train Mountain does this sort of thing where they provide you with green cubes that you can place near bad track. The more cubes, the more likely that the track is the issue. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMxldLyW06-RnGg.html

A lot of people cut up on the derailing but what they need to realize is how do you level and gauge track with as much snow as you get in a winter season
@toothlessvideos
@toothlessvideos Жыл бұрын
There is a lot of work in keeping the track level especially in the winter. If Millbrook didn't have as many derails as it has, the railroad wouldn't have much of a personality. Might even be boring. This is the first channel that I subscribe to for model railroading.

WOW! That plow "gits 'er done"! One suggestion, go to a farm store and get some Graphite spray, clean the front of that plow off, and spray the daylights out if it, that snow shouldnt stick so bad. And, so what about derailments, it happens to the big roads!

If you add some plastic paddles to the tips of the impellers in the second stage blower so they just touch the wall that machine will blow slush just like powder.

I see you have a bicycle leaning against the tree there. Why don't you take the rubber tires off and put Outrigger on one side put a small Railcar wheel on it and you can ride the rails. Just like on standard gauge people ride the rails abandoned rails that way
@DavidAMcC

It probably would not work well on that gauge track as the cantilever arm would be too short

If u keep running the train up n down the tracks n plow it every couple of hours does that wear down the battery? If A had a backyard railroad n it snowed A would run the train up n down like the regular railroad ta keep the tracks clear n keep the snow n ice build up along the rails good thing A live in South East Georgia sad part is A will never have enough ta own ma own railroad that would b a dream come come true
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
I built this railroad on a shoestring. Spending an average of $1000 a year on the mainline and two sidings over the course of a decade. ... and running up and down the track multiple times during a storm not only runs the batteries down, it also wears the operator down. Imagine sitting outside for a rain storm, only the temperature is so cold that the rain freezes before it hits the ground.

@@MillBrookRailroad that's cool n that sucks about the battery wearing down n about the weather especially the cold temperatures n the freezing rain A was only trying ta help on keeping the rails cleared n keeping it from getting iced up n derailing here in Southeast Georgia we don't have ta worry about the ice to much it never gets to thick ta walk on n lasts long but we do get lots of flooding with heavy storms not sure how aluminum rails does in rain n flooding conditions n especially in cold temperatures compared ta steel rails hope y'all is staying warm dry n safe n A really really really seriously honestly truly wish A had the money ta have a backyard train 🤠🤠🙂🙂
