A relatively uneventful plow train this time with some nice angles. This snow was more typical of what we normally get in this part of Vermont. I was able to get the speed up on the locomotive, and the X-91 performed well. Even the 70 behaved!
Well, mostly behaved.

This was a great video! Seeing all that snow made me pause the video and grab a cup of hot coffee in my nifty Mill Brook coffee cup! I love seeing the Russell at work. The view looking backwards at the front of the plow was really neat. I don't think the work required to remove the remaining snow off the butterfly blade would be worth it as the snow always appears to fly off. Glad your new switch point turned out good.

Yes I " enjoyeded" it! Love the camera angles, really provides an interesting view. Only one minor derailment, I would consider that a success. At least on your own railway, you don't have to fill out an incident report & pee in a bottle! LOL😅 Keep up the good work.

It's nice to see a plow run where (almost) nothing goes wrong. I have a thought on plowing the passing siding to keep the snow off the main line. If you keep the left hand wing retracted when you plow the siding it may not push as much snow back onto the main. |[]\ instead of /[]\
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
I've done it that way before. I may do it that way again. It depends on the snow conditions. Sometimes, it is actually easier to plow with the wings out and then shovel the track I bury. It is nice when things go relatively well.

Glad you enjoyed it! If you want to enjoy this hobby without a commitment, there's probably a club or a private track near you. Even occasional volunteers are welcome at most tracks. A rotary snow plow is simply the rear stage of a 2 stage snow blower. You'll see our snow blower in an upcoming video.

@TopperMachineLLC We normally get a lot more snow than we've gotten this year. Usually, in amounts like 4-10 inches but occasionally more in a single storm. This has heh an unusually warm winter.

On the big plow instead of having the rubber on it. I was thinking warm up the plow end bend it down closer to the track then have a piece of aluminum aluminum stock grind the leading edge so it drags on the rail head have it bolted under the plow blade like a front end loader has a cutting edge
@danielfantino1714
@danielfantino1714 Жыл бұрын
Good success Aaron !! Your plow design was the most common made for single track use, pushing snow on both sides with that V shape. More rare were those for double tracks, pushing all the snow on right side. In fact it would be simpler to build than that complex V. On left side the vertical wall goes up to front. Than at about 45 degrees (welded) riveted is the plow. Using an ordinary aluminium plow cut at good lenght can be use. All snow in front going on right side. I forgot if they had wings on both sides ( they had regular wing on side snow is thrown and a shorter one on opposite side). At the end of the run at Sugar House, turn it on your turntable (if it was built on mainline), and ready to start to do siding or passing track, pushing far less snow from one track on the other one. On that scale, not sure if lateral forces specially on right curves won´t increase derailment. I know you won´t build an other one. It was just suggestion to others viewers. OUPS ! LATER ADD ON. some where builted to throw snow one side only but it can be on rigjt or left side. CP have/had 4 to throw on right side. Very rare for branch with no wye or turntable to turn equipment, some where builted with plow at EACH end and lacked side wings. Imagine Aaron´s plow with the plow and, a small cupola cab on roof then the second plow on the other end in opposite direction.

A coat of a good car wax on the blade may help with wet snows. I used it on the blade I had on my ATV for snow and it seemed to help quite a bit. Typically I did it a few times a winter, since the snow seems to wear it off after a few uses. For the yellow plastic you have, it may be best to keep the plastic. Better that breaks when it hits a rail joint or something instead of bending up the front edge of the metal plow. Might just recess the yellow plastic down so that it is level with the red metal.

Considering the amount of snow clearing that you do, I would very much like to see you build a car mounted snow thrower/blower - maybe not as extravagant as a rotary style railroad style snowblower but even just the cheapest small electric blower you can find at the BigBox with the handles removed and mounted on a plywood caboose or boxcar.

Re: the raised edge of the yellow scraper blade. Don't know if it's metal or plastic, but doesn't matter. Why not grind/file the vertical edge into a taper, so that the snow would slide up and over the taper, rather than be blocked by the vertical edge…..just a thought. JDM (not Linda)

Just a thought, but was wondering if you could redesign the plow with a pneumatic lift on it , lift on rails so it could raise, lower or float kind of like what the railroad does with hydraulics or even use hydraulics over electric. The extra weight in the plow wouldn't hurt anyways and would probably solve the derailing issue. Like I said not an expert just a thought
