The backwater valve is a code required directional valve installed in a sewer to keep the public sewer from flooding a building if it should back up. Sioux Chief makes an excellent kit for installation which includes the backwater valve, and an access barrel and finish cover. Both the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) require the installation of a backwater valve in certain specific situations.
In this video, Plumber-Tom shows an example of a backwater valve and explains how it functions. Then he gives a detail description of the varying circumstances where a back water valve should be installed. Finally, he takes you on a first person tour of an underground plumbing installation and shows the installation of a backwater valve. He shows how you can decide when to install a backwater valve based on the existing manhole on the street.
This video is intended to help plumbing professionals understand the backwater valve.

As far as making sure your house drain or section of drain is above the manhole, I know sometimes a slow grade can be deceiving and hard to tell how far it goes up. Have you ever felt a need to shoot grade to make sure you are good? I also liked the video with the field walk through. Well done!

Thanks! I have taken time to figure elevations with a laser level. Most of the time a visual inspection is good enough though.

Why not put a the backwater valve / Cleanout at the main line outside of the house and close to the street to avoid the whole house having any issue whatsoever.

Great idea. The problem is accessibility. The sewer in many places is so deep that an additional manhole would be required to access the valve. That is why it is most often installed inside the building. Also, fixtures that are not below the next upstream manhole in the street are not required to pass through the back water valve. If the valve were installed outside the building it would require a separate building drain, which is not ideal.

Hello, how is the flap attached to main body? Will it stay in place in a severely overcharged sewer system from torrential rain. I saw a Oatey brand, and it looked like the flap could be lifted easily up and off. Didn't seem like a good design ,if I am actually seeing it correctly. Thanks

Some of the models can be lifted out of place, which is a problem. Some manufacturers have improved their design and connected the flap to a ring so it cannot come out of place.

Thanks, my existing valve, is longer than the ones I am seeing advertised on line. Right now there are 4" long fernco black coupling with steel clamps. Since a newer shorter valve would replace it, is it acceptable to only have a inch overlap of fernco on both ends of fernco? Or would I have to figure out something like a PVC connector inside valve to extend length? Thanks

The Oatey flap only comes out of place when the screw top is off which is what secures it in place.

What are the chances that in later years, or decades, the manhole cover gets stuck so won't overflow? Or at least not straightaway until increased pressure has built up. It could mean a house level with it or even slightly above getting backflow into the property for a time (shortly) before the manhole goes. Do manhole covers expand sufficiently on a really hot day to get stuck in place?

Manholes usually have a bunch of vent holes in them to provide air flow. Pressure building up is bit common.

Any backflow is a back thing and will cause stoppage of the valve.

Sir I have installed this product but it's not working.It is unable to prevent the back flow of rainwater.

That was above the manhole level at the street so it was not necessary to run that through the backwater valve.
