Pocket Knife Blade Replacement

Replacing the blade of a worn out Boy Scout Pocket knife. The whole knife could use some more love, but to get it back into use, I just needed to replace the blade part. I used 5160 steel for the replacement and tempered it a bit more than normal since it'll get some heavy use from the owner. For those asking, the words on the crest on the knife are "Be Prepared."

I can't believe he would take the time to make another but didn't clean up the rest of the pieces of the knife.

Agreed. He had the knife all apart, but didn’t clean and polish the rest when it was the perfect time to do so. Perhaps he was just wanting to make the knife useful. Good blade replacement however, without the original tang stamp. All is in the eyes of the beholder.

As a collector, it would be more important for me to preserve the mark than to make a new blade.

Great job. The Cub and Boy Scout knives are great knives. I have many of both the Imperial and Camillus models. Why didn’t you put a thumb nail cut in the blade? To each his own. Great work.

Good video. I’ve been cleaning up and repairing several old knives. This inspires me to try to do something more intricate.

Got to say I'm very impressed I take apart and put together pocket knives all the time as part of my job and I got to say you're the first video I've seen where somebody actually filmed taking apart a pocket knife and replacing the blade and putting it back together that alone is awesome to see but yeah I would love to see another video of the whole knife being restored

Yes you have to temper the metal first you heat is then cool it fats in oils to make the metal stiff but fragile then you heat it and cool very slow with heat bringing it down slow this tempers and makes the steel strong

Dear Mr. I have "Camillus pocket knife" in 1966. and restoring now. As you know those pocket knives had spring(leaf spring? or something.),and have to make one. cause broke. If you do this, what kind of steel you choose? stainless or 5160 steeel like this video. Thanks, From S.korean. viewer

Nice work. On disassembly, did you pre-drill the rivets before punching them out? Also, on reassembly did you reuse the same rivets or replace them with new rivets? If you replaced them, did purchase them or fabricate them yourself? Also, it looked as though you were going to fabricate a new blade spring as well, did you do that or did you reuse the existing spring? Again, nice job, thank you for posting.

I didn't predrill the rivets, as I was worried the drill would wander. The punch allowed me to be much more accurate, though it was a bit more tedious. I made new rivets on the lathe from mild steel since the size of the originals wasn't readily available. I tried to reuse as much as I could from the knife, so other than the new blade and the rivets, everything else was kept as is.

@@flyingwforge4628 Great job on the penknife Mon Ami. I discovered a really neat way to push out the rivets on these knives : on the stationery jaw to your vice, drill a hole inside the jaw to receive a hardened ,pointed pin (broken drill bits are ideal) whose diameter is just less than the knifepin. Offer the penknife up into the jaws placing a suitably shaped washer (old bicycle brake washers are perfect!) over the other end of the pin to allow it to travel when pushed. Hope that's clear enough. It's a very controlled and non destructive way to push out the pins------ and the same technique will also remove cotter pins/ tool handle pins, etc., all without ever striking a blow. 😄

On the "heel" of the new blade (where the edge meets the rotating pin there's a bump) I would have made that a little bigger. It prevents the knife from smacking into the spring when you close it and it's easy to file it down after assembly.

@@devatwell334 The steel spacers are also springs, that’s what allows the blades to snap open and closed and provides the necessary tension for the knife to function properly. 😊

You should cut the pins instead of punching it out of the bolsters! You will minimize widening the counter sink holes and expanding the pin inside the hole!

Nice job on the new blade except the point profile is incorrect. A By Scout camp knife has a what I believe is called a drop point. Also, you should cut a thumb nail slot as in the original.

Camp knives like these usually have a spear point blade like what's on a Swiss army knife. The replacement blade he made is a slight drop point or "skinner" blade almost like what you see on an old hickory butcher knife

I need a similar size blade for an all stainless miliitary camp knife. The entire blade is missing. I am ready to snap everything back together if I can find a blade.

Look for a maker stamp, then check online. Ive found replacement blades for old timer knives on walmart.com.

@@JeffyLube I have been there and done that and currently have an expert from a large cutlery company searching through their stock. They buy closeout extra stock from large companies for resale of blades and other parts.
